NBN 500 vs NBN 100: Which Plan Is Right for Your Household in 2026?

NBN 100 is enough for many households when peak use is moderate and the service is reliable. NBN 500 is worth considering when several people regularly download, stream, back up files or work online at the same time, and your address can order the tier over compatible infrastructure. The right choice depends on simultaneous demand, upload needs, connection technology, evening performance, total price and your home Wi-Fi—not simply the number of people or devices.

Before changing plans, check the exact speed and upload rate, the access technology at your address, the provider’s typical busy-evening speed and the ongoing price after any promotion. In 2026, the labels can hide important differences because NBN Co changed some wholesale offerings in September 2025.

NBN 500 vs NBN 100 at a glance

Question NBN 100 NBN 500
Typical use Moderate simultaneous browsing, streaming, video calls and gaming Heavy simultaneous use, frequent large downloads and large households with high peak demand
Download headroom Up to the retail tier’s advertised rate, subject to technology, provider, congestion and equipment Substantially more headroom for concurrent downloads and large transfers
Upload Depends on the specific retail product and technology NBN Co’s cited Home Fast wholesale profile is 500/50 Mbps on eligible services; retail upload must be checked
Availability Not universal; depends on address, technology and product Not universal; the title alone does not establish eligibility
Best value When current performance meets the household’s needs and it costs materially less When the household regularly saturates a lower tier and the extra capacity is available at a sensible ongoing price

These are tier labels, not guarantees of the speed delivered to every device. A provider may use different product names, and the same nominal tier can perform differently depending on the NBN access technology, provider network, Wi-Fi and device.

What changed about these tiers in 2025 and 2026?

NBN Co announced that its Home Fast wholesale plan for selected fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) and hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC) services increased from 100/20 Mbps to 500/50 Mbps from September 2025. That is a wholesale change, not a promise that every retail “NBN 100” customer was automatically moved to 500 Mbps or that every address can order NBN 500.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

At some addresses, “NBN 100” may still describe a legacy retail product even though an eligible Home Fast service is now faster. At others, the underlying technology may not support the same tier. Always read the actual download and upload figures beside the plan name and confirm the technology serving your address.

The ACCC’s April 2026 measurement report includes an NBN 100 FTTN panel and an NBN 500 HFC panel. Those separate panels illustrate why a tier label cannot be evaluated without its access technology. Do not assume an FTTN household can order NBN 500 simply because the title of a plan comparison mentions it.

Can you get NBN 500 at your address?

Eligibility is the first decision, before household arithmetic or equipment shopping. Use the provider’s address checker and ask which NBN technology and speed profiles are available at the service location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Enter the complete service address. Apartment, unit and business records can return different results from a street address.
  2. Record the access technology. Look for FTTP, HFC, fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) or another NBN technology.
  3. Record both speeds. Write down the advertised download and upload rates, not just “100” or “500”.
  4. Ask about migration conditions. A tier change may require a new modem, a technician visit or a different contract term.
  5. Check the provider’s current product page. Availability, names and prices change, so an old comparison table is not sufficient evidence.

If the checker does not offer NBN 500, do not treat a higher number on another address or another technology as evidence that it can be ordered at yours.

Is NBN 100 fast enough for your household?

NBN 100 is generally a sound value choice when the household’s busiest periods are moderate, the current service does not routinely stall and the lower ongoing price matters. It is not automatically inadequate for working from home, streaming or gaming.

  • Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.

Work and study

Video meetings usually consume far less than 100 Mbps per call. The practical issue is whether several meetings, cloud synchronisation, software updates and other activity occur at once. A single person on a normal workday may notice no benefit from moving to 500 Mbps if the existing service is stable and the home network is capable.

Streaming and entertainment

Streaming is a concurrent-use question. One or two streams can leave substantial capacity on a 100 Mbps service, while several high-resolution streams combined with downloads, consoles and work traffic can use the available headroom. Services also adapt their bitrate, so a lower plan does not automatically mean poor picture quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gaming

Download speed affects game patches and installations more than the responsiveness of an online match. Latency, routing, Wi-Fi interference and server distance usually matter more during play. NBN 500 can shorten a large download, but it does not inherently lower ping or repair a weak wireless signal.

When does NBN 500 make sense?

NBN 500 is a capacity choice for households that repeatedly encounter contention on a lower tier or place a high value on faster large transfers. Relevant patterns include:

  • Several people regularly stream, attend video meetings or upload files concurrently.
  • Large game, operating-system or media downloads are frequent and waiting time matters.
  • Cloud backups, photography or video workflows create sustained upload and download demand.
  • The household has many active users during the same evening window rather than merely owning many connected devices.
  • The address is eligible, the provider’s evening performance is strong and the price premium is acceptable after promotions end.

There is no authoritative rule that a particular number of residents or devices must choose NBN 500. Ten mostly idle devices can use less bandwidth than two people performing sustained transfers. Base the decision on what happens at the same time, especially during the busiest hours.

Why upload speed can change the decision

Download speed receives most of the advertising attention, but upload matters for sending large files, cloud backup, livestreaming, remote production and multiple simultaneous video calls. NBN Co’s cited Home Fast wholesale figures are 500 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload on selected FTTP and HFC services. A retail plan may use different limits, so verify the provider’s upload figure rather than inferring it from the download label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the household mainly consumes content and rarely sends large files, the upload difference may not justify the higher monthly cost. If several people back up photos or work with large project files, upload capacity can be the deciding specification.

Compare busy-evening performance, not just the headline maximum

The ACCC says providers should advertise a typical busy-evening speed for the period from 7 pm to 11 pm. That figure is more useful than a maximum speed that may be achievable only under ideal conditions. Compare the current typical evening download speed for each provider and plan you are considering.

ACCC measurements are population-level evidence. They do not guarantee the speed at one address, on one device or at one moment. Use them as context, then investigate the provider’s address-specific information and your own service history.

Item What to verify
Access and eligibility FTTP, HFC, FTTN or another technology; whether NBN 500 is orderable at the address
Download Advertised peak rate and typical 7 pm–11 pm speed
Upload Advertised upstream rate and any technology-specific restriction
Price Ongoing monthly charge after the introductory period

Current provider-by-provider prices and address-specific availability vary and should be checked directly before ordering; a fixed price from an older article is not reliable.

Your Wi-Fi can hide the benefit of NBN 500

An access upgrade cannot overcome a bottleneck inside the home. NBN Co reported that 26% of customers paying for wholesale download speeds of 500 Mbps were using Wi-Fi 4, which NBN Co described as having a typical maximum speed of 100 Mbps. That figure is a warning to check the existing router and client devices, not proof that every Wi-Fi 4 installation is limited to exactly 100 Mbps or that every customer needs new hardware.

NBN Co’s annual report states: “Customer experience, including speed, depends on your internet provider, plan, equipment quality and if you use the internet at peak times.” The statement captures why a faster plan can appear ineffective when the limiting factor is wireless coverage, an old Ethernet port, interference, router processing or a busy device.

Check before buying equipment

  • Run a speed test on a wired device connected directly to the router, then compare it with a test over Wi-Fi in the same room.
  • Check whether the router’s WAN and LAN ports support the plan’s rate.
  • Identify the Wi-Fi generation used by the router and the devices that matter most.
  • Test from rooms where people actually work or stream; distance and building materials can reduce throughput.
  • Separate 2.4 GHz coverage problems from an NBN service problem by testing near the router.

An optional Wi-Fi 6 router can help when testing confirms that the existing wireless equipment is the constraint. A mesh Wi-Fi system may suit a larger or difficult-to-cover home. Neither changes the NBN plan’s contracted speed, and the correct choice depends on floor area, wiring, router arrangement, device compatibility and current support.

A practical decision process

  1. List simultaneous activities. Note what happens during the busiest hour: meetings, streams, backups, downloads, gaming and smart-home traffic.
  2. Measure the current problem. Record wired and Wi-Fi results at different times, especially between 7 pm and 11 pm. Note outages, stalls and upload delays.
  3. Confirm technology and eligibility. Use the address checker and obtain the exact download/upload profile for NBN 100 and NBN 500, if both are offered.
  4. Compare typical evening speeds. Do not select a plan from the maximum headline number alone.
  5. Calculate the real cost. Include the post-promotion rate, equipment charges and any contract or setup conditions.
  6. Remove the home-network bottleneck. If wired speed is good but Wi-Fi is poor, improve placement, cabling or wireless coverage before paying for more access capacity.
  7. Choose the smallest tier that meets the observed peak demand. Upgrade when recurring contention or long transfers justify the premium; stay on NBN 100 when it meets needs and saves meaningful money.

Household examples

One or two moderate users

A couple who browse, make occasional video calls, stream television and play online games may find NBN 100 sufficient, particularly if wired tests are healthy and the evening service is stable. A 500 Mbps plan would mainly provide extra download headroom rather than a guaranteed improvement in latency or Wi-Fi coverage.

Family with overlapping evening use

A family that routinely combines several high-resolution streams, console downloads, work meetings and cloud synchronisation has a stronger case for NBN 500, provided the address is eligible and the router can distribute the capacity. The decision is based on repeated overlap, not the family’s headcount alone.

Home-based creative or technical work

A household moving large media, engineering or development files may value both the higher download rate and the available upload. Check the actual upstream limit: a nominal NBN 500 label does not by itself establish a 50 Mbps retail upload.

Large home with weak coverage

If speed is acceptable beside the router but poor in bedrooms or a distant office, changing from NBN 100 to NBN 500 may not solve the complaint. Improve wired backhaul, router placement or mesh coverage first, then reassess the access tier.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Using household size as a rule. Measure concurrent demand instead of assigning a tier by resident count.
  • Assuming every NBN connection can order 500 Mbps. Eligibility varies by technology and address.
  • Comparing only advertised maximums. Use the provider’s typical 7 pm–11 pm speed as an additional decision point.
  • Ignoring upload. Large outbound transfers and cloud backups can expose an upstream bottleneck.
  • Blaming the NBN for Wi-Fi limitations. Test over Ethernet and near the router before changing plans.
  • Treating an upgrade as a latency fix. Faster downloads do not automatically improve game ping or video-call responsiveness.
  • Using an introductory price as the permanent cost. Record the recurring charge and all one-off fees.

Bottom line for choosing between NBN 100 and NBN 500

Choose NBN 100 when moderate peak use is handled reliably and the lower ongoing price is valuable. Choose NBN 500 when your eligible connection and home network can use it, several demanding activities regularly overlap, or large transfers are a routine cost in time. Verify the address, technology, upload rate, 7 pm–11 pm performance and post-promotion price before ordering; those facts matter more than the tier name alone.
