Choose NBN 500 when your address can order the 500/50 Mbps tier and you want independently measured, consistent peak-hour performance. Choose 5G home internet when your local signal is strong, a simple wireless installation matters, or a suitable fixed-line service is unavailable. Neither is universally faster, more reliable or cheaper. Your address, network technology, indoor signal, household load, equipment and the full contract price decide the result.

The latest Australian evidence supports a strong case for eligible NBN 500 services, but it is not a guarantee for every premise. Wireless results can change sharply between streets, rooms and busy periods, and there is no independent national dataset that directly compares NBN 500 with 5G home broadband.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Quick answer: which should you choose?

  • Pick NBN 500 if your premises is served by FTTP or HFC, the plan is orderable, and you need predictable upload capacity for work, cloud backups, large downloads or several simultaneous users.
  • Pick 5G home internet if the provider confirms usable service at your exact address, the modem can sit where it receives a strong signal, and you value plug-and-play setup or cannot obtain an appropriate NBN fixed-line tier.
  • Do not decide from a headline maximum speed. Compare the provider’s busy-period information, upload performance, data policy, equipment terms and cancellation cost for your address.
  • Test before cancelling your current service where the provider offers a trial or cooling-off period. A 5G signal that looks strong outdoors can be poor behind concrete walls or in an interior room.

In the ACCC’s December 2025 Measuring Broadband Australia results, NBN fixed-line services averaged 98.5% of their plan download speed during weekday busy hours (7–11 pm). The 500/50 Mbps NBN Home Fast tier averaged 493.7 Mbps in those conditions, while 6.3% of monitored services in that tier were classified as underperforming. Those are monitored-service averages, not an individual promise.

There is no equivalent independent, national 5G home-internet result in the supplied evidence. Treat any 5G speed figure as a provider- and location-specific estimate until you have checked the exact address and tested the service.

What NBN 500 actually provides

The 500/50 Mbps tier

NBN Home Fast is sold as up to 500 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload. The upload figure matters for video calls, sending large files, off-site backups, security-camera footage and households where several people upload at once. A 500 Mbps download plan can still feel slow if the upload path, Wi-Fi or a device’s network adapter is the bottleneck.

Independent busy-hour results

The ACCC measured an average of 493.7 Mbps for monitored 500/50 Mbps Home Fast services during the December 2025 evening peak. Across all NBN fixed-line plans in that report, the average was 98.5% of plan download speed. Commissioner Ian Oppermann described the result as encouraging because Australians on fixed-line connections typically receive the speeds they paid for.

The same report classified 6.3% of monitored Home Fast services as underperforming. That figure is important: a strong average does not remove the need to check your line, provider, router and cabling when your own result is poor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Eligibility is determined by access technology

The 500/50 Mbps tier is available on Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) in the cited ACCC material. Fibre to the Node (FTTN) and Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) cannot access this tier as described there. Your address checker, not the suburb name or an advertisement, determines what you can order.

If your premises is on FTTN or FTTC, ask the retailer whether an FTTP upgrade pathway is available and what conditions apply. An upgrade may change the plans you can buy, but availability and any charges are address-specific.

How 5G home internet differs

A radio link rather than a dedicated cable

A 5G home service uses a cellular radio connection between an indoor or outdoor modem and a nearby 5G network site. The modem then supplies your home through Wi-Fi and, on some models, Ethernet. You avoid a fixed-line installation, but the quality of the radio path becomes part of your broadband connection.

Local conditions can dominate the result

Availability maps are only a first check. Building materials, window placement, modem orientation, tower distance, line of sight, weather and congestion can all affect a radio service. The ACCC lists those factors when explaining variation on NBN fixed-wireless services; its 83.8% busy-hour speed and 43.5 ms latency figures are for NBN fixed wireless, not 5G home internet. They must not be presented as 5G test results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the 5G provider for its current typical busy-period download and upload speeds for your plan, the expected coverage at your address, data limits or traffic-management rules, and the permitted modem location. If the provider cannot give address-level guidance, arrange a trial before relying on the service for work or other high-consequence uses.

NBN 500 vs 5G home internet: the evidence side by side

Question NBN 500 5G home internet
Can you order it? Only where the address and access technology support the 500/50 Mbps Home Fast tier; the cited ACCC material identifies FTTP and HFC, not FTTN or FTTC. Depends on the provider’s 5G coverage, capacity and address qualification. Confirm the exact premises.
Download reference 493.7 Mbps average in weekday 7–11 pm busy hours for monitored 500/50 Mbps services, December 2025 (ACCC). No independent national 5G home-broadband figure is established in the supplied evidence.
Plan speed 500 Mbps download / 50 Mbps upload. Varies by provider, plan and radio conditions; compare both download and upload figures.
Busy-hour consistency NBN fixed-line services averaged 98.5% of plan download speed in December 2025; 6.3% of monitored Home Fast services were underperforming. Can vary with indoor signal, network load and local radio conditions. A national like-for-like result is not available here.
Latency evidence The cited result establishes speed performance, not one universal latency figure for every NBN 500 service. Do not substitute the ACCC’s 43.5 ms NBN fixed-wireless result for a 5G measurement.
Installation Uses the existing NBN access network; an FTTP upgrade or technician visit may be required in some cases. Usually a modem-based setup, but placement for signal quality and provider equipment rules are critical.
Price certainty Retail prices often change after a promotion; one reported example was A$89 per month for 12 months, then A$99. Compare the live monthly price, modem repayments, data policy and cancellation terms for the exact plan.

The table deliberately separates measured NBN performance from 5G estimates. Comparing a provider’s maximum 5G download claim with an independently measured NBN evening average would mix different measures and produce a misleading winner.

How to compare the two services at your address

1. Check the NBN technology and orderable speed

  1. Enter the complete service address in an NBN retailer’s address checker.
  2. Record the access technology shown: FTTP, HFC, FTTN, FTTC or another technology.
  3. Confirm that 500/50 Mbps Home Fast is actually orderable, rather than assuming that “NBN 500” in a search result applies to your line.
  4. If the address is FTTN or FTTC, ask whether an FTTP upgrade is available, what prerequisites apply and whether the retailer has any upgrade-specific terms.

2. Qualify 5G at the exact premises

  1. Use the provider’s address checker and enter the unit or lot number, not just the postcode.
  2. Ask which room or window is recommended for the modem and whether an external antenna or technician installation is supported.
  3. Request the current typical busy-period download and upload speeds, any data allowance, and the service’s traffic-management policy.
  4. Check trial, return and cooling-off conditions so you can test evening performance without being locked into unsuitable hardware.

3. Match the connection to your household’s traffic

List the activities that happen at the same time: 4K video, video meetings, gaming, large game downloads, cloud synchronisation, remote work, cameras and smart-home devices. Download-heavy households benefit from high sustained throughput; upload-heavy households should pay close attention to the 50 Mbps NBN upload and the 5G plan’s actual upload estimate.

For gaming and calls, consistency and latency variation matter more than a single speed-test peak. Run tests at the times you normally work or play, including the 7–11 pm period when congestion is most likely to be visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Calculate the complete cost

Write down the promotional monthly charge, the date it ends, the ongoing charge, modem cost or repayment, installation fees, delivery, optional mesh equipment and any early-cancellation amount. Multiply each monthly rate by the number of months it applies, then add one-off charges. Compare the first-year total and the cost from month 13 onward; a low introductory rate can become expensive after the promotion.

TechRadar reported an example on 7 October 2026 of an Optus NBN 500 offer at A$89 per month for 12 months, then A$99 per month. It is a dated example, not a universal market price, and terms and availability can change. Getprice also lists promotional NBN 500 offers with higher ongoing rates. Recheck the live retailer page immediately before ordering.

5. Check equipment and coverage inside the home

A 500 Mbps service can be throttled by a 100 Mbps router port, an old Wi-Fi standard, damaged cabling or a device with a slower network adapter. The ACCC specifically gives an older router limited to 100 Mbps as an example of a problem on NBN 500. Before buying anything, check the router’s WAN and LAN specifications, Ethernet category, firmware and placement.

If replacement is necessary, look for a Wi-Fi 6 router with Gigabit Ethernet and confirm that it supports your provider’s authentication and voice requirements. A new router cannot fix an overloaded access network, a weak 5G signal or a faulty line, so treat it as one diagnostic step rather than a guaranteed cure.

For 5G, the modem’s position is part of the installation. Test near an external wall or window, keep it clear of metal and enclosed cabinets, and check every room where users work. A strong signal at the modem does not guarantee strong Wi-Fi at the far end of the house; mesh access points or Ethernet may still be required.

Speed, uploads and latency in real use

Why the NBN 500 figure is useful but limited

493.7 Mbps is a useful independent busy-hour benchmark because it was measured on the 500/50 Mbps tier, not inferred from a theoretical maximum. It tells you that the monitored service group generally retained nearly all of its advertised download speed at peak time. It does not promise 493.7 Mbps to your individual device, over Wi-Fi, or at every hour.

Speed tests should be run over Ethernet first. A wired result close to the plan rate with a slow Wi-Fi result points to in-home coverage or interference. A wired result that is consistently low points toward the NBN access line, the retailer’s network, congestion, modem configuration or a fault.

Why a 5G speed test can move more

5G throughput may change as the modem selects a different band, users share the cell, foliage or weather affects the path, or the modem is moved a short distance. A single test at midday is not a capacity assessment. Test morning, evening and the busiest period, and repeat the test in the modem’s intended permanent location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Latency and jitter

For calls and games, a stable round trip and low jitter are more valuable than a headline download number. Use the provider’s published latency information if available, then test the actual service while another device is downloading. The ACCC’s 43.5 ms average busy-hour latency for NBN fixed wireless provides context for that technology only; it is not evidence about 5G home performance or every NBN 500 line.

Reliability: is NBN more reliable than 5G?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer. An eligible NBN 500 fixed-line connection has a strong measured record during busy hours, but it can still fail because of a line fault, power outage, damaged internal wiring, provider outage or defective equipment. A 5G connection avoids a last-mile cable to the home and can be installed quickly, yet it depends on radio conditions and the serving cell’s capacity.

Ask what happens during a power failure: both a fixed-line modem and a 5G modem normally need mains power. If you rely on an alarm, medical device, EFTPOS terminal or other critical equipment, confirm compatibility, battery-backup options and emergency-call arrangements with the provider before switching.

Reliability also includes repair and support. Check the provider’s fault-reporting channel, service-status page, technician access requirements and any service-level exclusions. Keep your existing service active until the replacement has passed evening tests and all essential devices work.

Value: is 5G home internet cheaper?

5G can be cheaper in a particular household if it avoids an installation charge, uses included hardware and has a lower ongoing fee. It can be poorer value if a data cap, congestion management, modem repayment or early-return charge limits the service. NBN can cost more after a promotion but may deliver the upload capacity and consistency needed for several users.

Use a three-part calculation:

  1. First-year cost: promotional monthly charges plus activation, delivery, hardware and any required installation.
  2. Ongoing cost: the monthly price after the promotion, including any modem repayment that continues.
  3. Exit cost: cancellation fees, remaining hardware balance, return postage or an unreturned-equipment charge.

Do not treat one dated NBN offer as the price of every NBN 500 plan, and do not infer a 5G price from a mobile-phone plan. Retail pricing is volatile; verify the current offer, eligibility, promotion end date and equipment terms on the day you order.

Which households suit each option?

NBN 500 is usually the safer fit when:

  • Your address has FTTP or HFC access to the 500/50 Mbps tier.
  • Several people work, study, stream and upload simultaneously.
  • You send large files, use cloud backup or host services that need dependable upload capacity.
  • You need predictable evening performance and can connect key devices by Ethernet.
  • You are prepared to troubleshoot the router and internal cabling rather than judge the access line from a weak Wi-Fi test.

5G home internet is usually the better fit when:

  • The provider confirms strong 5G service at your exact address and offers a usable trial or return policy.
  • You rent, move frequently or want to avoid a fixed-line installation.
  • Your current NBN technology cannot deliver the speed tier you need and no practical fibre upgrade is available.
  • Your household’s upload and latency requirements are modest enough to tolerate variation.
  • The modem can be placed near a window or external wall and still provide adequate Wi-Fi coverage.

Troubleshooting before you switch

If NBN 500 is slow

  1. Run a test over Gigabit Ethernet with Wi-Fi disabled on the test device.
  2. Check that the router WAN and LAN ports are Gigabit-capable; a 100 Mbps port will cap the result.
  3. Replace suspect Ethernet cables and test with a second computer.
  4. Repeat at 7–11 pm and outside peak hours, recording the date, time and server.
  5. Ask the retailer to investigate when wired results remain well below the plan speed after equipment checks.

ACMA advises customers to ask providers about compatible equipment and associated costs. Keep those requirements in writing before purchasing a replacement modem or router.

If 5G is unstable

  1. Move the modem to several windows or exterior-facing rooms and allow it to reconnect at each location.
  2. Record signal indicators and speed, latency and upload results at morning, afternoon and evening.
  3. Separate radio performance from Wi-Fi performance by testing a wired device where the modem supports Ethernet.
  4. Ask the provider whether congestion, fair-use management, firmware or a cell outage is affecting the service.
  5. Use the trial or return process if the service cannot meet your required times and locations.

Do not assume a new Wi-Fi router will improve the 5G radio link. It can improve coverage after the modem has a good connection, but it cannot increase the capacity of a congested cell.

A practical decision rule

Order NBN 500 when the address checker confirms FTTP or HFC eligibility, the total price fits your budget and a wired evening test or the ACCC benchmark gives you the consistency your household needs. Choose 5G when address-level coverage is strong, the modem can be positioned well, the provider’s current busy-period figures meet your needs and the full cost remains attractive after hardware and cancellation conditions.

If both qualify, run the same test schedule for each service: wired where possible, morning and 7–11 pm, with an upload test and a latency check while the connection is busy. Compare the results with your actual activities rather than with an advertised maximum. That process is more reliable than declaring one technology the winner for every Australian address.

What the latest network data does—and does not—say

NBN Co reported average monthly downloads of 557 GB per connected service across technologies for the six months to 31 December 2025. That is network-wide context, not a recommended allowance and not a usage figure specific to NBN 500 or 5G. Use your own bills and router statistics when estimating data needs.

NBN Co chief executive Ellie Sweeney said fibre upgrades were associated with lower fault rates, faster speeds and an improved customer experience. That is the network operator’s statement, not independent comparative proof against 5G. The ACCC’s Measuring Broadband Australia program concluded in June 2026; its fixed-wireless results covering February to April 2026 should remain clearly separated from the December 2025 Home Fast measurements.
