Why NBA 2K27 led despite a softer market
The reported US video-game market generated about $4.3 billion in consumer spending in August, down 9% year over year. Content spending fell 10% to about $3.8 billion. These are Circana figures as reported by GamesIndustry.biz and TheFly/TipRanks.
- Subscription spending rose 3% year over year.
- PC content spending rose 13%.
- Console content spending fell 7%.
- Spending on physical Game-Key Card releases rose 631%.
The leading game and the overall market therefore tell different stories: NBA 2K27 topped the monthly full-game dollar chart, while total spending was lower than in August 2025. In a statement reproduced by VGChartz, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella said: “US video game projected total spending across content, hardware and accessories dipped 9% in August when compared to a year ago, to $4.3 billion.”

Hardware sales and prices in August
VGChartz, reporting Circana data, said 559,000 video-game hardware units were sold in the US in August, the lowest August total since 2013. The reported average price paid for new hardware was $541, an August record. These figures describe hardware, not NBA 2K27 sales.
Early access timing and platforms
Take-Two’s July 22 announcement named August 28, 2026, as the planned start of early access for Deluxe and Ultra edition owners. TheFly/TipRanks coverage instead reports an August 26 early-access release. Those dates conflict; they should not be combined into a single confirmed date. The chart’s “within four days” description comes from GamesIndustry.biz, and the available reporting does not resolve the timing discrepancy.
