Annual recurring revenue (ARR) is an annualized view of recurring contract value at a particular date—not a standardized measure of revenue already earned or a guaranteed forecast. For AI companies with usage-based pricing, the headline number is especially hard to interpret without knowing what is contracted, what depends on future consumption, and how renewals are counted.
What ARR means—and what it does not
ARR is a company-defined operating metric that expresses recurring contract value on an annualized basis. Its calculation depends on the issuer’s rules: which contracts count, how usage is treated, and what happens when a contract is nearing renewal. There is no single definition that makes every company’s ARR directly comparable.

ARR is not the same as recognized revenue under accounting rules. SailPoint says its SaaS ARR is an operating metric that should be viewed independently of subscription revenue, and that it is not a forecast of future subscription revenue. Revenue recognition, renewals, and non-recurring sources can all affect the relationship between the two. SailPoint’s Form 10-Q explains its definition and cautions.
Why companies can report different kinds of ARR
SailPoint: annualized active SaaS contracts
In its Form 10-Q for the period ended July 31, 2026, SailPoint defines SaaS ARR as the annualized value of SaaS contracts as of the measurement date. It calculates the figure by dividing active SaaS contract value by the contract’s number of days and multiplying by 365. If a customer’s contract has expired while SailPoint is actively negotiating a renewal or new agreement, SailPoint continues to count the annualized value until the customer says it will not renew. Contracts included under that renewal treatment accounted for less than 1% of reported SaaS ARR at the measurement dates shown in the filing.

Yext: contractual minimums and certain usage
Yext defines ARR as the annualized recurring amount of contracts executed by the final day of the reporting period, assuming no subsequent changes. Its calculation includes contractual minimums and, where relevant, annualizes monthly amounts above those minimums. Yext says ARR is independent of historical revenue, unearned revenue, remaining performance obligations, and other GAAP measures; it should be considered alongside those measures, not as a substitute for or superior to them. These methods illustrate why an ARR figure should be read with its definition and measurement date. One issuer may include a contract under active renewal discussions, while another’s calculation may annualize usage above a minimum commitment. Neither method is a universal standard.

Why usage-based AI pricing complicates the picture
AI software may be sold as a subscription, through consumption-based agreements, or through a mix of minimum commitments and metered use. In its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, C3 AI describes pay-as-you-go agreements under which customers pay for monthly consumption of vCPU and vGPU hours. In such arrangements, current usage or contracted obligations may not map neatly to future revenue.
C3 AI cautions that remaining performance obligations (RPO) may not accurately reflect future growth for pay-as-you-go consumption agreements. The relationship can be affected by when renewals occur, whether customers convert to production subscriptions, purchases of additional capacity, contract terms, and seasonality. RPO is not ARR, but this disclosure is a useful warning against treating a contracted-obligation figure as a simple forecast when usage drives the business. This does not mean AI ARR is inherently unreliable or that all AI vendors use the same pricing model. It means a reader should distinguish committed recurring amounts from revenue that depends on future consumption, renewal, or deployment decisions.
How to compare ARR disclosures
Before comparing two companies’ headline ARR figures, check whether they measure the same thing on a comparable basis:

- Measurement date and contract base: Identify the reporting date and which active or executed contracts are included.
- Usage assumptions: Find out whether the figure includes only contractual minimums, annualized overages, or other usage-based amounts.
- Renewal treatment: Check whether contracts near expiration or in active renewal discussions remain in the calculation.
- Products and services covered: Confirm whether the metric covers SaaS contracts alone or includes other contract types or services.
- Methodology changes: Look for changes in the company’s definition or calculation between reporting periods.
If the definitions or included contract bases differ, the headline numbers are not a like-for-like comparison. Attribute each figure to its issuer, definition, and reporting date rather than treating ARR as a universal accounting measure.
Read ARR alongside revenue and commitments
ARR can help describe the scale of a company’s recurring contract base, but it does not show by itself how much revenue has been recognized, how much usage customers will generate, or whether they will renew. Consider it alongside reported subscription or total revenue and the company’s disclosures about renewals, retention, commitments, and consumption exposure.
For context, C3 AI reported $327.6 million in subscription revenue and $389.1 million in total revenue for the fiscal year ended April 30, 2025. Those are issuer-reported revenue figures for that fiscal year, not ARR and not current-period estimates. They illustrate why operating metrics and recognized revenue should be kept distinct.
