Native nature-strip gardens can provide useful food and shelter for urban pollinators, but their impact depends on local conditions and council rules. In a 2026 study in Melbourne, 14 planted strips attracted seven times more insect pollinators and twice the variety of species than unchanged comparison strips—a promising local result, not a guaranteed outcome for every garden.
What a Melbourne study found
Dr Philippa Bell and Professor Kirsten Parris of the University of Melbourne worked with the City of Merri-bek and 14 residents in Brunswick, Coburg and Fawkner. The team recorded insect biodiversity before and after garden installation, comparing planted strips with controls that were left unchanged. Residents helped install gardens using native plants known to feed or shelter local insects.

The researchers reported that the 14 gardens attracted seven times more insect pollinators and twice the variety of species than the untouched strips. The feature, published 29 September 2026, does not provide enough detail to calculate uncertainty around that effect or show that the same increase will occur elsewhere. Plan for pollinators across the seasons
Choose plants suited to your region and the actual conditions on the strip: sun, soil, exposure, water availability and street disturbance. Check your council’s approved plant lists and ask local native-plant nurseries or community groups about locally appropriate species. A generic wildflower mix may contain plants unsuitable for your area.

Build variety into the planting rather than relying on a single flowering burst. The Melbourne authors recommend a mix of flower colours, shapes, sizes and flowering times. NatureScot’s general pollinator guidance recommends food sources from early spring to late autumn, along with places for nesting and hibernation. This is broad ecological guidance, not an Australian species list. Minimise pesticide exposure and include habitat features beyond flowers where practical. Check your council’s rules before digging
A nature strip is public space and may contain services or infrastructure. Local rules can specify whether a permit is needed, how much pedestrian access to leave, plant height, setbacks from the road and which species are allowed. Search for [my council] nature strip guidelines or use the local term—such as verge, parkway or tree lawn—and confirm requirements with the council before starting.
For example, Sunshine Coast Council’s self-assessable criteria allow garden-bed plants up to 50 cm, require beds to be set back 60 cm from the road edge, and require a clear 1.8 m pedestrian width where there is no formed path. Prepare the strip and choose a realistic planting scale
Removing established lawn can take patience. Bell and Parris mention solarising or sheet mulching as preparation options. For the Southern Hemisphere context of their advice, they suggest preparing in summer and planting in autumn; use local seasonal guidance if you live in a different climate or hemisphere.

A 2021 National Environmental Science Program report surveyed 22 Perth verge gardens. It found an average of 27.8 planted species per garden, with counts ranging from 7 to 97, and described suburban verge gardens as averaging between 15 and 40 species. - Local fit: regional provenance and council approval.
- Pollinator resources: flowering season, flower form and colour, and whether the mix provides resources over time.
- Street suitability: mature height, toughness, water needs and maintenance demands.
- Habitat value: whether the planting offers shelter as well as nectar.
There is no universal species palette or ideal number of species established by these sources. Let local rules and conditions guide the design, and aim for a diverse planting that is manageable to maintain.
