The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.5% in the week ending Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and Russell 2000 all finished lower, according to The Associated Press. All four indexes rose on Friday. AP linked that session’s gains to a September jobs report that eased concerns about inflation and the prospect of a Federal Reserve rate hike later in October.
How the major indexes performed
AP’s weekly figures show a split between the Nasdaq Composite and the other three indexes. Friday’s gains did not erase the week’s losses for the Dow, S&P 500 or Russell 2000.

All figures in the table are from The Associated Press’s Oct. 2, 2026 report. The indexes measure different groups of stocks: the Dow is a 30-stock index, the Russell 2000 tracks smaller U.S. companies, and the Nasdaq Composite includes thousands of Nasdaq-listed stocks. None of those index moves alone describes every company in its category.
Why stocks rose on Friday
AP reported that U.S. employers slowed hiring in September. That helped cool worries that a stronger economy could add to inflation, and traders pared bets on a Federal Reserve rate hike later in October. Treasury yields initially fell before recovering some of their decline as oil prices rebounded from an early drop, AP said.

This is the reported context for Friday’s broad advance, not proof that the jobs report alone caused the week’s performance or the Nasdaq’s gain.
Did chip and software stocks drive the Nasdaq gain?
The index results establish that the Nasdaq Composite outperformed the other three indexes over the week; they do not establish which sectors or individual stocks produced that return. The AP recap does not identify semiconductor or software stocks as drivers. An Oct. 3 release from Stock Preachers carried that attribution in its headline, but its visible text does not supply stock-level evidence to support it.

Without dated performance figures for the relevant companies or sectors, it is not possible to verify that chips and software led the move. The Nasdaq’s weekly gain should not be treated as proof of that explanation.
Did the Nasdaq reach a record?
The available AP report does not say that the Nasdaq Composite set a record. It says the S&P 500 was within 1% of its all-time high. That S&P detail does not establish a Nasdaq record, so “fresh ground” should not be read as confirmation of a new Nasdaq high.

Why weekly percentages differ across reports
Stock Preachers’ Oct. 3 release gives slightly different weekly returns: Nasdaq +0.44%, Dow -1.42%, Russell 2000 -0.13% and S&P 500 -0.31%. AP reports +0.5%, -1.3%, -0.2% and -0.3%, respectively. These are alternative published figures; this article uses AP’s set consistently rather than combining the two sources.
