Chase Briscoe did. But Larson, who spent part of the afternoon a lap down, finished second and left Las Vegas 40 points ahead of Denny Hamlin in the Cup Series Chase, up from 26 going in. Five Chase races remained.
How the race went
Briscoe, in the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, led a race-high 175 of 267 laps and swept both stages, according to the NASCAR Wire Service and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Larson, in the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, finished 1.376 seconds back. Tyler Reddick was third.

Larson’s recovery, lap by lap
The early problem
Larson started sixth but struggled with handling. Autoweek reports that a Lap 33 stop for an adjustment, centered on the right-front wheel area, lasted 26 seconds and put him a lap down. A caution then let him take a wave-around and get back on the lead lap. Briscoe, meanwhile, won Stage 1 after leading 35 of the opening 80 laps.
The climb
| Point in the race | Larson’s position |
|---|---|
| End of Stage 1 | 23rd |
| End of Stage 2 | 10th |
| 30 laps to go | 3rd |
| 11 laps to go | Passed Bubba Wallace for 2nd |
| 10 laps to go | 0.346 seconds behind Briscoe (Autoweek) |
The final lap
With one lap left, Larson and Reddick had closed to under four-tenths of a second behind Briscoe, per NASCAR’s recap. Larson moved high through Turns 3 and 4 to build momentum. He got loose, overcorrected and hit the outside wall. Reddick then made contact with Larson and slid across the infield grass. Both recovered and kept their spots, so the final margin to Briscoe was wider than the closing laps suggested.

Felt like I moved up at the right time and did a decent job with it; just was trying to push hard in [Turns] 3 and 4 to build some momentum out, and I don’t know, and just got really loose and overcorrected in the wall.” His summary of the day: “It was a fight.”
Briscoe, per the speedway’s recap, said his attention during the closing laps was “more of the windshield, except for when Larson would get really, really close.”

These are post-race standings as of October 4, 2026, and they will change. Autoweek also notes Larson’s average finish through the first five Chase races was 2.2, which Hendrick describes as the best opening five races of a postseason in NASCAR history.

How to read the contrast with Briscoe
Briscoe’s day was control: a stage sweep and 175 laps led. Larson’s was repair work. That contrast does not prove Larson had the faster car overall. By his own account, his tires were worn by the time he reached Briscoe, and the lap lost early cost him track position. A 40-point lead with five races left is substantial, but the reporting describes only the standings at this moment, not a settled championship.
