NASA’s Swift Telescope Is Falling Toward Earth After Rescue Plan Fails

NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory is descending toward Earth because atmospheric drag is lowering its orbit, and a planned robotic boost mission will not attempt to capture or raise it. In its latest cited update, dated Sept. 25, 2026, NASA said Swift was about 200 miles (325 kilometers) above Earth and expected it to cross a difficult operational threshold in early to mid-October. That threshold is not a forecast of the date the spacecraft will reenter the atmosphere.

Which NASA telescope is falling toward Earth?

The spacecraft is the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a satellite in low Earth orbit—not a telescope on the ground. NASA describes Swift as a multiwavelength observatory that studies gamma-ray bursts and other cosmic events using visible, ultraviolet, X-ray and gamma-ray instruments. Its rapid response is central to its mission: after detecting a gamma-ray burst, Swift can interrupt its observing schedule and point its X-ray and ultraviolet/optical telescopes toward the event’s afterglow. Why is Swift’s orbit dropping?

Atmospheric drag gradually slows spacecraft in low Earth orbit and lowers their altitude when they cannot use propulsion to maintain it. NASA says recent solar activity heated and expanded Earth’s upper atmosphere, increasing drag on Swift and accelerating its descent. The agency adjusted the spacecraft’s pointing and instrument operations to reduce drag while preparing for a possible orbit boost. NASA’s Aug. 28, 2026 update on resumed science observations

Why did the rescue mission fail?

LINK was meant to capture and boost Swift

NASA contracted Katalyst Space Technologies in September 2025 to develop LINK, a robotic servicing spacecraft intended to rendezvous with Swift, capture it and raise it to a higher orbit. The Associated Press reported that the NASA contract was valued at $30 million. Associated Press report, Aug. 19, 2026

Attitude-control problems ended the boost attempt

On Aug. 19, 2026, NASA and Katalyst said LINK would not try to capture and boost Swift because of an ongoing attitude-control issue. The spacecraft could still attempt rendezvous and proximity operations as a technology demonstration, but that is different from rescuing Swift: it does not mean the capture-and-boost plan is proceeding. Swift’s status: what changed and when?

Date NASA-reported status
Feb. 11, 2026 Swift temporarily suspended most science operations to reduce drag while awaiting a boost mission. NASA principal investigator S. Bradley Cenko said: “Swift’s Burst Alert Telescope will continue to detect gamma-ray bursts, but the spacecraft will no longer slew to observe targets with its other telescopes.” NASA update
Aug. 19, 2026 NASA and Katalyst ruled out LINK’s capture-and-boost attempt because of attitude-control issues; rendezvous and proximity operations remained possible as a technology demonstration. NASA update
Aug. 26, 2026 Swift’s ultraviolet/optical and X-ray telescopes resumed observations after being turned off to limit drag. NASA update
Sept. 18, 2026 NASA said Swift’s Burst Alert Telescope was calibrated and detecting gamma rays. NASA update
Sept. 21, 2026 Swift resumed automatically repointing its other telescopes after detecting a gamma-ray burst. NASA update
Sept. 25, 2026 NASA reported Swift at about 200 miles (325 kilometers) altitude, with all three instruments operating and automatic repointing restored. The agency estimated it would reach the 185-mile (300-kilometer) operational threshold in early to mid-October. NASA update

Does early to mid-October mean Swift will reenter then?

No. NASA’s early-to-mid-October estimate concerns crossing 185 miles (300 kilometers), an operational threshold below which Swift’s observations become difficult and are likely to cease. It is not an exact atmospheric-reentry date. NASA’s Sept. 25 update said that resuming science had accelerated Swift’s descent; the cited agency and AP reports do not establish a final reentry date. The AP’s Aug. 19 report said Swift’s demise was not expected before October, a forecast made before NASA’s later September update—not a confirmed schedule.
