NASA’s SPHEREx infrared telescope has produced atmospheric spectra for a set of nearby brown dwarfs, and the main finding is that these objects differ from one another more than their temperatures alone would suggest. The spectra show signatures of water (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), and methane (CH₄). Current atmospheric models reproduce the broad chemical trends but struggle with the cloudy transition objects. The brown dwarfs in this study are not rogue planets. They are failed stars that drift through space without a host star, and they are the subject of this story.
What a brown dwarf is, and why “lonely” is the right word
A brown dwarf forms the way a star does, when a cloud of gas collapses under its own gravity. It never gathers enough mass to ignite the hydrogen fusion that powers stars like the Sun. Its atmosphere, however, has much in common with that of a giant planet, which is why brown dwarfs are useful for studying planetary-style atmospheres without a bright star nearby.

The “lonely” label refers to the fact that these objects are free-floating. Lead author Zafar Rustamkulov, an IPAC scientist, put the distinction this way: “Unlike exoplanets, free-floating brown dwarfs are completely independent celestial objects that will fade into eternity alone. We’re still learning how complex they are.” An exoplanet is usually studied in orbit around a star. A free-floating brown dwarf has no star to orbit, so it cools and dims on its own schedule.
What SPHEREx measured
NASA’s report, dated October 9, 2026, says the team analyzed SPHEREx observations of 37 nearby brown dwarfs spanning roughly 4,000°F (2,200°C) down to about −4°F (−20°C). The peer-reviewed paper, Zafar Rustamkulov et al., “SPHEREx 0.75–5 μm Spectra for a Sequence of Nearby Brown Dwarfs,” appeared in The Astrophysical Journal in 2026 (DOI 10.3847/1538-4357/ae9d66). Its abstract describes the telescope’s coverage and resolution as follows:

| Flux captured | More than 80% of total bolometric luminosity for most brown dwarfs, per the abstract’s statement about the wider SPHEREx brown dwarf measurements | IPAC publication abstract, October 2026 |
| Survey cadence | About 3,600 unique images per day, as part of an all-sky survey | NASA report, October 9, 2026 |
The bolometric figure is a statement about the wider set of SPHEREx brown dwarf measurements, not a per-object result for every target in the detailed sample.
Counting the sample: 37 objects and 33 objects
Readers will see two numbers, and they describe different things. NASA’s report counts 37 nearby brown dwarfs among the observations it analyzed. The paper’s abstract describes a principal sequence of 33 nearby field brown dwarfs, spanning spectral types L0 to Y4 and temperatures of roughly 2,500 K to 250 K. The abstract also discusses low-gravity and low-metallicity objects that were compiled separately.
| Sample | Count | What it covers | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Observed brown dwarfs in NASA’s account | 37 | Objects whose SPHEREx observations the team analyzed for the reported spectral behavior | NASA report, October 9, 2026 |
| Principal field sequence | 33 | Nearby field brown dwarfs, spectral types L0 to Y4, roughly 2,500 K to 250 K | IPAC publication abstract, October 2026 |
| Low-gravity and low-metallicity objects | Separately compiled | Discussed alongside, but not part of, the 33-object field sequence | IPAC publication abstract, October 2026 |
| Total SPHEREx brown dwarf measurements | Thousands | Spectra measured across the survey, with analysis still ongoing | IPAC publication abstract and NASA report, October 2026 |
The thousands figure describes what the survey has measured, not what the paper analyzes in detail. Treat 33 and 37 as the sizes of the sets described in these two sources, and treat the larger survey as an ongoing body of work.

The spectra carry signatures of four molecules: water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and methane. Each one absorbs light at particular wavelengths, so the strength of each feature in a spectrum reveals how much of that molecule the atmosphere contains and at what depth.

The central observation is variation. J. Davy Kirkpatrick, an IPAC co-author, said, “We’re seeing the signatures of these molecules and how they change from object to object across the entire temperature regime.” NASA quotes Rustamkulov making the same point more bluntly: “No two brown dwarfs are alike. Even at the same temperature, their spectra look quite distinct.” Two objects at a similar temperature can therefore show different atmospheric chemistry, which means temperature alone does not describe a brown dwarf’s atmosphere.
Where the atmospheric models fall short
The models that predict brown dwarf atmospheres are good at the big picture. Rustamkulov said, “The state-of-the-art models are capturing the general chemical trend, but when it comes to these cloudy transitions, the models are struggling to match the data.” The cloudy transitions are the objects between the L and T classes, where the atmosphere shifts from a cloud-laden, hotter appearance to a cooler, methane-rich one.
The paper’s abstract is more specific about where the mismatches occur. It reports disagreement in the J, H, and K flux peaks and in the 4 μm opacity window, most strongly in L/T transition objects. The largest deviations involve CO₂ and CO features. In the paragraph below, the term “vertical mixing” needs a plain definition: it describes how strongly gas is stirred upward from deeper, hotter layers into the upper atmosphere, and it controls how much CO and CO₂ appear at the top of the atmosphere.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn that parameter, the observed field sample favored models with weak vertical mixing, with a value of kzz = 10⁴ cm² s⁻¹, from the Elf Owl model set, over strongly mixed alternatives. This is a preference across the sample rather than a verdict on any single brown dwarf, and it means that the models are being tested as much as the objects are being studied.

Why SPHEREx can see what ground telescopes cannot
Earth’s atmosphere blocks many infrared wavelengths, and water vapor is the main culprit. Ground-based telescopes cannot easily observe the bands that water absorbs. SPHEREx, which operates above the atmosphere, can. Rustamkulov said, “From orbit, SPHEREx sees wavelengths of light that are basically impossible to see with telescopes on the ground because water in Earth’s atmosphere absorbs them.”
That coverage matters for this study because the 0.75–5 μm range includes the spectral features that separate the molecules discussed above. Continuous coverage across that range, measured at low resolution, lets the team compare many objects with the same instrument and calibration, rather than stitching together data from different facilities.

The survey is still producing data. Kirkpatrick described the findings as “a call to action to explore even more of these dark worlds.” The immediate task for modelers is to reproduce the cloudy L/T transition objects and the CO and CO₂ features that the current set of models misses. Rustamkulov’s quote about the goth look of these objects, “They’re kind of goth,” captures the mood of the study, but it does not describe any measured property.
The NASA report and the paper use slightly different counts and descriptions, so the figures above should be read against the source each one comes from.
The team is measuring brown dwarfs that do not orbit a star, and the spectra show that each one carries its own chemical signature.
