On May 30, 2024, NASA’s Curiosity rover accidentally drove over a rock in Gale Crater and split it open. The bright yellow crystals inside were identified by Curiosity’s arm-mounted instruments as elemental sulfur—the first confirmed discovery of sulfur in its pure, uncombined form on Mars.

What Curiosity found

The discovery began with an ordinary drive. A wheel rolled across a rock, fracturing it and exposing a crystalline interior that had been hidden from view. The fragments were later photographed by Curiosity’s Mast Camera (Mastcam) on June 7, 2024, the rover’s 4,208th Martian day, or sol.

NASA nicknamed the exposed fragment field “Convict Lake.” The photographed area was about 5 inches (13 centimeters) wide. The crystals looked yellow because elemental sulfur commonly has that color in its solid crystalline form.

Why the yellow crystals were a surprise

Curiosity was exploring terrain rich in sulfates—salts containing sulfur that commonly form as water evaporates. Earlier sulfur-related discoveries in the area were compounds in which sulfur was chemically combined with other elements.

This rock was different: its material was elemental sulfur, meaning sulfur atoms were present in a pure form rather than as part of a sulfate or another sulfur-bearing mineral. NASA says elemental sulfur forms only under a narrow set of conditions that scientists had not associated with this location. The connection between the pure sulfur and the surrounding sulfate-rich minerals is still unresolved.

What pure sulfur may reveal about Gale Crater

The crystals are a direct mineral identification, but they do not identify the process that created them. Their geological importance is that they record chemical conditions not predicted from the nearby deposits.

  • Past fluids: Ancient water or brines may have created localized chemical conditions unlike those recorded by the surrounding rocks.
  • Evaporation: Concentrating fluids can produce unusual minerals, although the specific pathway to this sulfur remains unknown.
  • Volcanic or other chemistry: Sulfur can also be associated with volcanic activity or reactions involving gases and minerals. NASA has not established which explanation applies here.

Further analysis of the exposed rock and its geological setting will be needed to distinguish among these possibilities.

What the discovery does—and does not—prove

Established by the rover

  • Curiosity’s wheel fractured the rock on May 30, 2024.
  • Arm-mounted instruments identified the yellow material as elemental sulfur.
  • Mastcam documented the fragments on June 7, 2024.

Not established by the discovery

  • It is not evidence of life or biological activity.
  • It does not by itself prove that Gale Crater once had a particular volcanic, evaporative or groundwater process.
  • It does not show that all nearby sulfur-bearing rocks contain pure sulfur.

Why an accidental wheel fracture mattered

Without the rover’s wheel pressure, the crystals would have remained sealed inside the rock and invisible to Curiosity’s cameras. The event illustrates the value of combining mobile exploration with instruments that can examine freshly exposed surfaces: an unexpected mechanical accident produced a target that could be photographed and chemically identified in place.

Curiosity project scientist Ashwin Vasavada described the find this way: “Finding a field of stones made of pure sulfur is like finding an oasis in the desert.” The comparison reflects the discovery’s rarity in the local geological setting, not a claim that the rocks formed an environment suitable for life.
