That means the spacecraft will be about 16.094 billion miles (25.902 billion kilometers) from Earth—the distance light travels in 24 hours. As of October 13, 2026, this is a forecast for a future milestone, not a confirmation that it has happened.
What does the one-light-day milestone mean?
A light-day is a measure of distance: it is how far light travels in 24 hours. NASA’s projected figure puts Voyager 1 16.094 billion miles (25.902 billion kilometers) from Earth at the forecast time. The milestone is about the spacecraft’s distance from Earth, not its age, its distance from the Sun, or the edge of the solar system. NASA’s page summarizes the distinction: “The milestone Voyager 1 is closing in on is about distance, not time.” (NASA Science: Where are Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 Now?)

When is Voyager 1 expected to reach one light-day away?
NASA’s current-position page forecasts the milestone for 2:16:07 a.m. Pacific Standard Time on November 18, 2026. The date and distance are projections published before the event; they should not be read as a live odometer reading or as proof the spacecraft has already reached that distance.
Is Voyager 1 already in interstellar space?
Yes. Voyager 1 entered interstellar space on August 25, 2012, when it crossed the heliopause, the outer boundary of the Sun’s heliosphere. NASA describes the heliosphere as “the protective bubble of particles and magnetic fields generated by the Sun.” At the crossing, Voyager 1 was about 122 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun—roughly 11 billion miles (18 billion kilometers). That 2012 crossing and the projected 2026 light-day milestone describe different things. The heliopause crossing marked a boundary in the Sun’s influence and was measured from the Sun. The light-day milestone measures Voyager 1’s distance from Earth. Reaching one light-day away does not mean Voyager 1 is newly entering interstellar space or reaching the edge of the solar system.
Voyager 1’s journey to the milestone
- September 5, 1977: Voyager 1 launched. NASA identifies it as the most distant human-made object. (NASA/JPL: Voyager 1)
- 1979 and 1980: It flew past Jupiter and Saturn, respectively.
- August 25, 2012: It crossed the heliopause and entered interstellar space. NASA says plasma-wave observations provided additional confirmation after the plasma science instrument stopped working.
- November 18, 2026, projected: NASA forecasts that it will reach one light-day from Earth.
What is Voyager 1 doing now?
Voyager 1 is on an extended mission to measure the interstellar environment. Its instruments and operating status change as the spacecraft ages, so an instrument count needs a date attached. NASA’s mission page and a later NASA status story report different snapshots: the mission page lists four functioning instruments, while the later story describes two science instruments operating after an instrument shutdown. These are dated status reports, not a permanent specification. (NASA/JPL: Voyager 1; NASA status story)

The Golden Record aboard Voyager 1
Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 each carry a 12-inch, gold-plated copper record intended to communicate something about Earth to any future discoverer. NASA says its contents include 115 images, natural sounds, music, and greetings in 55 languages. The agency notes that the spacecraft and record would be encountered and played only if advanced spacefaring civilizations exist in interstellar space. (NASA Science: Golden Record Contents)
