NASA Found a Potential Sign of Ancient Life on Mars—but Has Not Confirmed It

NASA has not proved that life once existed on Mars. Its September 10, 2025 announcement described patterns in a Perseverance sample as a “potential biosignature”: something that might have a biological origin, but needs more study before scientists can conclude whether life was present. The sample could offer important clues about ancient Mars, yet nonbiological explanations remain possible—and the plan for bringing it to Earth for more detailed analysis is unresolved in the NASA announcements described here.

What NASA found in the Cheyava Falls rock

In July 2024, NASA’s Perseverance rover encountered an arrowhead-shaped rock called Cheyava Falls in the Bright Angel formation, within Neretva Vallis in Jezero Crater. NASA described the ancient river valley as 400 meters wide and the rock as 1 meter by 0.6 meters. The rover drilled a sample from the rock; that sample is named Sapphire Canyon.

The setting matters because the Bright Angel sedimentary rocks contain clay and silt, as well as organic carbon, sulfur, oxidized iron and phosphorus. Those ingredients provide context for interpreting the mineral patterns, but their presence by itself is not evidence that organisms lived there.

Using its PIXL and SHERLOC instruments, Perseverance identified patterned mineral reaction fronts on the rock. NASA calls the markings “leopard spots.” The spots carried signatures of vivianite, a hydrated iron phosphate, and greigite, an iron sulfide. The rover’s measurements revealed mineral and chemical patterns in place; NASA did not report finding an organism or a fossil.

Why the patterns could—and could not—point to life

One possible explanation is that microbes used chemical reactions involving organic material and iron-bearing minerals to obtain energy. In that interpretation, the leopard spots could preserve signs of a past environment in which microbial activity affected the rock.

But vivianite, greigite and the reactions associated with them can also form without life. NASA’s September 10, 2025 account described possible nonbiological pathways involving high temperatures, acidic conditions or organic compounds. NASA said the rock showed no evidence of high temperatures or acidic conditions, but emphasized that abiotic explanations cannot be ruled out.

That is why “potential biosignature” is a deliberately cautious term, not a synonym for proof. NASA defines one as a substance or structure that might have a biological origin but requires more data or further study before scientists can reach a conclusion about the presence or absence of life. As Perseverance scientist Joel Hurowitz put it, “just because we saw all these compelling chemical signatures in the data didn’t mean we had a potential biosignature. We needed to analyze what that data could mean.”

The competing explanations have to be tested against the same questions: Can microbial metabolism produce the observed mineral pattern? Can nonbiological processes produce the same minerals and textures under the conditions recorded in the rock? What additional chemical, structural and geological context would distinguish those possibilities? The current rover observations make the sample a candidate for further study; they do not settle those questions.

Why analysis in an Earth laboratory could matter

Perseverance can examine the rock with instruments on Mars, but it cannot carry the full range of sophisticated laboratory equipment available on Earth. NASA’s sample-return science overview describes returned samples being subjected to detailed laboratory analysis, including investigation of their astrobiological significance and whether they contain evidence of past life. NASA’s FY2027 budget request also characterizes Cheyava Falls as a potential-biosignature sample and says Earth-based analysis could enable more precise, in-depth study.

Laboratory work would not automatically turn an intriguing pattern into proof. Rather, it could allow scientists to examine the sample in greater detail and test whether its chemistry, structure and geological context are better explained by biological processes or by nonbiological ones. The result would still depend on what the analyses show.

Will Sapphire Canyon be brought back to Earth?

The return plan is uncertain in the NASA announcements described here. In January 2025, NASA said it was pursuing two possible landing architectures for Mars Sample Return and expected to confirm a program design in the second half of 2026. Separately, NASA’s announcement about its FY2026 budget proposal said the proposal would end Mars Sample Return.

Those announcements describe competing planning and funding signals; neither establishes, by itself, the final funded program status or a current return date. NASA’s FY2027 budget request discusses the potential scientific value of analyzing the Cheyava Falls sample on Earth, but that is not confirmation that the sample is scheduled to return. The available statements therefore do not support saying either that Sapphire Canyon will never come back or that its return is assured.

What the finding means for the search for life

Cheyava Falls is a notable candidate because its mineral patterns appear in a rock with ingredients relevant to possible microbial metabolisms, and NASA says some proposed abiotic explanations fit the observations less well. But an interpretation that seems plausible is not the same as a confirmed detection. As Perseverance project scientist Katie Stack Morgan said, “Astrobiological claims, particularly those related to the potential discovery of past extraterrestrial life, require extraordinary evidence.”

For now, the accurate answer to “Did NASA find life on Mars?” is no: NASA reported a potential sign worth investigating, not proof that life existed. Whether the sample can receive the more extensive laboratory study NASA describes depends on Mars Sample Return decisions that the announcements above do not resolve.
