On March 3, 2025, the Lunar GNSS Receiver Experiment (LuGRE) reported a navigation fix on the lunar surface using signals from Earth’s GPS and Galileo satellite constellations. The purpose-built spacecraft receiver achieved the fix about 225,000 miles from Earth.
What NASA demonstrated at the Moon
LuGRE was developed by NASA and the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and flew aboard Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lander. NASA reports that the experiment acquired and tracked signals from both GPS and Galileo while in lunar orbit and on the surface. After Blue Ghost landed on March 2, 2025, LuGRE obtained a surface navigation fix, which NASA announced the following day. NASA’s LuGRE milestone report

The result shows that specially designed equipment can use navigation signals transmitted from Earth’s satellite constellations at lunar distance. It does not mean GPS satellites now orbit the Moon, or that a regular GPS receiver can reliably determine its position there.
Why a lunar GPS fix is not the same as lunar GPS service
GPS is one system within the broader Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) family; LuGRE tracked GPS and Europe’s Galileo. At the Moon, however, signals from Earth are weak, the satellites’ geometry may not provide a useful position, and the Moon can block signals from some satellites. NASA describes these as practical constraints on using Earth-based GNSS for lunar navigation. NASA’s lunar navigation overview

A demonstrated fix is a milestone, not proof of continuous availability, complete coverage, or operational performance for future missions. The achievement also depended on a receiver designed for the task. NASA’s report does not establish that ordinary smartphone, car, or handheld GPS receivers work at the Moon.
What NASA is building next
NavCube3-mini: testing a specialized receiver
NASA’s lunar mGNSS project developed NavCube3-mini, a compact receiver intended for users at high altitude and near the Moon. NASA lists its weight as 3.5 pounds and says it is 83% smaller, 73% lighter, and uses 57% less power than the earlier MMS navigation receiver. These are NASA-reported specifications and comparisons, not independent test results. NASA’s lunar mGNSS project page

NASA describes a planned flight of NavCube3-mini on a Lunar Communications Relay and Navigation Systems (LCRNS) satellite. That mission is intended to validate receiver performance in lunar operating conditions; it is a planned test, not a completed result.

LunaNet is NASA’s framework for interoperable lunar networking, navigation, detection and information, and radio and optical science. Its navigation services are intended to support autonomous positioning, navigation, and timing in lunar orbit and on the surface. - WAAS GPS receiver
- Simultaneous GPS and GLONASS reception
- Up to 10 position samples per second
- Bluetooth connectivity to up to 5 devices
- Automatic route recording
Rather than relying only on signals from Earth, lunar-centric services and other navigation techniques can help address the geometry and signal-availability limits of GNSS. NASA’s plans describe an evolving infrastructure, not a finished, continuously available lunar network.
LCRNS: relay infrastructure planned in stages
NASA identifies lunar relay satellites as the first implementation of LunaNet. In 2024, the agency selected Intuitive Machines to develop the first set of LCRNS relays, with launches planned in stages and coverage intended to grow as additional relays are added. Planned deployment and coverage are program goals; NASA’s selection announcement does not mean the full relay network is already operating. NASA’s LCRNS program page

What the milestone means for future missions
LuGRE shows that Earth’s navigation signals can contribute to lunar positioning when a receiver is engineered for the weak signals and mission environment. That is useful progress toward more autonomous navigation, but future crews and robotic missions will need dependable services suited to where they operate. NASA’s longer-term approach combines specialized GNSS technology with LunaNet and relay infrastructure, rather than treating one successful fix as a complete lunar GPS system.
