NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day for October 13, 2026, is “Desert Stairway to Heaven.” Credited to photographer Julien Looten, the image is a wide-angle composite captured in July 2025. It places Chile’s Desert Staircase sculpture in the Atacama Desert beneath a rising view of the Milky Way.

NASA’s caption identifies several additional sky and landscape features, from zodiacal light and airglow to the Andes, Licancabur volcano and the lights of San Pedro de Atacama.

What NASA’s October 13, 2026 APOD shows

The foreground sculpture is the Desert Staircase in Chile. Its steps lead the eye toward the night sky, while the exceptionally dry Atacama Desert provides a dark setting for faint astronomical features. The composition is not a single unaltered frame: NASA describes it as a wide-angle composite.

NASA’s official caption states: “The featured wide-angle composite was captured in July 2025.” The October 13, 2026 date is the publication date of the APOD entry, not when the photograph was taken.

Sky features identified in the picture

The Milky Way’s dark lane

The broad Milky Way arches upward behind the sculpture. Its dark lane is made by interstellar dust blocking some of the light from the dense star fields behind it. In a dark desert sky, that structure is visible as a contrasting, irregular band rather than a smooth glow.

Zodiacal light and Spica

A pale band at the upper left is zodiacal light, sunlight scattered by dust spread through the Solar System. NASA’s caption places the star Spica within this stripe. Spica is the bright principal star of Virgo and serves as a useful reference point when matching the annotated features to the image.

Green and red airglow

Just above the horizon are green and red bands of airglow. Airglow is a faint emission from chemical reactions in Earth’s upper atmosphere. Unlike auroral displays, it can appear as a broad, relatively even horizon glow and does not require a geomagnetic storm.

The Small Magellanic Cloud

At the top right, NASA identifies the Small Magellanic Cloud, a nearby dwarf galaxy visible from southern latitudes. Its separate, diffuse patch helps distinguish it from individual stars in the Milky Way.

Landmarks along the horizon

  • Andes Mountains: the mountain range forms part of the distant horizon.
  • Licancabur volcano: the prominent volcanic peak is identified by NASA in the landscape.
  • San Pedro de Atacama: the town’s lights appear as a low band of illumination near the horizon.

These artificial lights do not erase the major celestial structures in the composite, but they provide scale and a geographic anchor for the remote setting.

Why the Atacama setting matters

The Atacama is one of the world’s best-known astronomical observing regions because its high, arid environment commonly offers very low humidity and limited cloud cover. Those conditions help preserve contrast between the Milky Way, zodiacal light and airglow. The APOD caption identifies the location and visible features; it does not publish a quantified darkness reading, observing conditions for the night, or exposure settings.

How to read the composition

  1. Start at the sculpture: follow the stair edges upward to see how the foreground creates a visual path into the sky.
  2. Trace the Milky Way: look for the bright stellar band and then locate its branching dark lane.
  3. Check the upper left: the angled pale stripe is zodiacal light, with Spica in that region.
  4. Inspect the horizon: green and red airglow sits above the Andes and the lights of San Pedro de Atacama.
  5. Move to the upper right: the Small Magellanic Cloud appears as a compact, diffuse cloud-like patch.

Could you make a similar night-sky image?

A wide-angle astrophotography lens is a reasonable general starting point for fitting a foreground monument and a large section of sky into one frame. However, NASA does not identify Looten’s camera, lens, focal length, exposure settings or stitching workflow, so the APOD cannot support a claim about the equipment used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To attempt a comparable result, photographers generally need a genuinely dark location, a stable tripod, manual focus set for the stars, several exposures suitable for the foreground and sky, and careful alignment if frames are stitched. Bright moonlight, haze, wind or moving clouds can make the sky and foreground difficult to combine. Any processing should be described as the photographer’s own technique rather than inferred from this APOD.
