Yes, you can replace a purpose-built NAS with a mini PC, a suitable old x86 computer, a PC connected to direct-attached storage (DAS), or a cloud-storage service. The right choice depends on usable capacity, drive connections, expansion, setup effort, remote-access expectations, internet dependence, and who will maintain the system. A mini PC is only the host; you still need an appropriate storage design, drives, operating system, and a backup plan.

What counts as a NAS alternative?

A network-attached storage system makes files available to computers, phones, media players, and other devices over a network. A conventional NAS appliance combines the processor, memory, drive bays, storage software, and often remote-access features in one enclosure. An alternative separates or replaces some of those pieces.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Mini PC running NAS software: a compact x86 computer provides the host and a separate enclosure or internal drives provide storage.
  • Repurposed old computer: an existing desktop or server becomes the NAS host after its hardware is checked against the operating system and workload.
  • Mini PC plus DAS: the computer runs file-sharing and other services while a USB, Thunderbolt, or network-connected enclosure supplies the drive bays. Verify the enclosure interface and recovery behavior before buying.
  • Cloud storage: a provider operates the storage infrastructure and access service, so you manage accounts, applications, sharing, and billing instead of local disks and a server.
  • Prebuilt NAS appliance: a purpose-built enclosure remains an alternative to a computer-based build when integrated hardware and support matter more than maximum flexibility.

These options are not interchangeable feature-for-feature. A self-hosted system can give you control over the host, disks, and software, but you become responsible for installation, updates, security, hardware failures, and remote access. Cloud storage reduces local hardware work but introduces recurring terms, provider dependence, internet requirements, and questions about export and recovery.

Quick comparison

Option Best fit What you must verify Main trade-off
Mini PC with NAS software Compact host, flexible software, or additional home-server services Drive ports, memory, boot device, cooling, operating-system support, and workload External storage may be required; you handle setup and maintenance
Repurposed old computer You already own suitable x86 hardware and accept a learning curve Drive bays and ports, age, power draw, noise, firmware, and compatibility Lower host cost can be offset by energy use, replacement risk, and limited expansion
Mini PC plus DAS Separate service host and drive capacity Enclosure interface, drive count, capacity, expansion, and failure recovery A PC-plus-enclosure layout is not identical to a multi-bay appliance
Cloud storage Managed access from multiple locations with little local hardware Plan terms, storage limits, sharing, internet access, export, and recovery Recurring fees and provider dependence replace local maintenance
Prebuilt NAS appliance Integrated enclosure, supported software, and a simpler setup path Drive bays, supported drives, software features, support, and expansion Less hardware freedom and a higher total purchase price than reusing equipment may be possible

Mini PCs as NAS hosts

Why a mini PC can work

TrueNAS documentation describes support for repurposed x86 systems, and its development hardware guide says the platform can run on “almost any x86 computer.” That statement is from the development documentation last modified September 11, 2026, not a promise that every small computer is suitable for every release or workload. A mini PC with a compatible 64-bit Intel or AMD processor can host NAS software, file-sharing services, media tools, or other home-server applications when its storage connections and memory are adequate.

The compact host is not the storage system by itself. Many mini PCs have one internal M.2 or 2.5-inch bay and no room for a pool of several large disks. You may need a separate enclosure, an adapter, or a DAS chassis. Check the number and type of connections before buying: USB and Thunderbolt bandwidth, SATA ports, PCIe expansion, removable drive access, and whether the enclosure remains usable if the mini PC fails.

Hardware checklist

  • Processor: confirm that the NAS operating system supports the architecture and virtualization or encryption features you intend to use.
  • Memory: match the release documentation and leave headroom for file services, applications, and caching.
  • Boot device: use a separate SSD where the software documentation recommends one; do not assume the storage-pool disks should also hold the operating system.
  • Drive connectivity: count the ports and bays you have now and the ones you may need later.
  • Cooling and power: sustained disk activity is different from occasional desktop use. Confirm airflow, power delivery, and the ability to run continuously.
  • Networking: wired Ethernet is normally preferable for a file server; verify the speed and driver support of the interface.
  • Expansion: decide how you will add capacity if the internal bays are full. A compact host may require replacing an enclosure rather than adding an internal disk.

TrueNAS requirements depend on the release

Do not copy one TrueNAS requirement list to every NAS operating system or release. The following figures are version-specific recommendations from TrueNAS documentation:

Documentation Processor Memory Boot device Pool-device guidance Context
TrueNAS CORE 13.0 hardware guide 2-core Intel 64-bit or AMD x86_64 8 GB 16 GB SSD Two identically sized devices for one pool Last modified March 19, 2024; recommendations for CORE 13.0
Archived TrueNAS SCALE 24.10 hardware guide Release-specific x86_64 support 8 GB 16 GB SSD Two identically sized devices for one pool Archived documentation, last modified September 3, 2024
TrueNAS development hardware guide x86_64-compatible processor 8 GB 20 GB SSD Two identically sized devices for one pool Development changes, last modified September 11, 2026; use stable-release documentation for a stable installation

The CORE guide discourages a USB stick or spinning disk as the boot device. These figures are not universal minimums for every NAS operating system, nor should development-documentation numbers be mixed with stable-release requirements. Select the guide for the exact version you plan to install.

Repurposing an old computer

When reuse is sensible

An old desktop can be an excellent NAS host if it has the required 64-bit processor, enough memory, reliable storage connections, and acceptable power and noise. Reuse avoids buying another computer and lets you learn on hardware you already own. TrueNAS explicitly supports repurposed x86 systems, but support for a processor architecture does not guarantee that every controller, network adapter, or firmware combination will work smoothly.

Inspect the machine before installing anything. Count available SATA ports and drive bays, check whether the power supply has enough connectors, and look for dust, failing fans, swollen capacitors, or a weak battery-backed clock. A decade-old tower may offer more bays than a mini PC but consume more electricity and make more noise. Measure or estimate those ongoing costs rather than calling reuse automatically cheaper.

What happens to an existing Windows installation?

A computer that currently runs Windows may be suitable hardware, but the NAS software’s installation model determines whether Windows remains. A dedicated NAS operating system commonly takes over the boot device; running it alongside the existing desktop installation requires a supported virtual-machine or dual-boot design and adds complexity. Confirm the software’s current installation and hardware documentation before wiping or repartitioning the machine. Copy important files elsewhere first.

Old-computer failure points

  • Original hard drives may already be near the end of their service life; do not treat their age as evidence of suitability for a storage pool.
  • Consumer desktop drives are not automatically designed or warrantied for continuous operation or RAID groups. TrueNAS makes this warning in its current hardware documentation.
  • Older network adapters and storage controllers may lack drivers or modern power-management behavior.
  • Fans and power supplies can fail after years of continuous operation, so identify replacement parts before the system becomes your only copy of a file.

Mini PC plus direct-attached storage

A PC-plus-DAS design separates compute from disks. The mini PC runs the NAS operating system and services; the enclosure supplies multiple drive connections and capacity. This can be attractive when you want a small, quiet host but need more bays than the computer provides.

Questions to answer before buying a DAS enclosure

  1. Which interface does it use? Confirm USB, Thunderbolt, or another connection is supported by the host and operating system. The fastest headline interface does not help if the host lacks the required port or driver.
  2. How many drives fit? Count present bays and any supported expansion shelves. Check the maximum capacity per slot and whether mixed drive sizes are supported by the chosen storage software.
  3. How does the enclosure expose disks? A simple pass-through design and a hardware-RAID enclosure behave differently during replacement, monitoring, and recovery. Verify compatibility with the NAS software.
  4. What happens if the host or enclosure fails? Document how disks can be moved to another compatible host and whether the pool metadata remains readable without the original enclosure.
  5. How is it powered and cooled? A separate power brick, fan, or sleep mode introduces additional failure and maintenance points.

DAS is not automatically equivalent to a multi-bay NAS appliance. The host, cable, enclosure controller, and disks form one system, so a failure in any layer can interrupt access. Keep configuration notes and an independent copy of important data.

Choosing drives for a self-hosted NAS

CMR versus SMR

Drive technology matters when a storage system uses ZFS or performs large rewrites and resilver operations. TrueNAS warns that shingled magnetic recording (SMR) drives have slower write and overwrite behavior and can create instability or data loss during resilvering. The TrueNAS Mini product page recommends conventional magnetic recording (CMR) drives. Treat that as vendor-specific guidance for the stated software and product context, not as a blanket reliability promise for every NAS.

Check the manufacturer’s recording technology and workload rating for each drive. Do not rely solely on a retail title that says “NAS.” Verify the exact model, capacity, interface, warranty terms, and whether the vendor supports continuous operation and RAID use.

Usable capacity is less than the sum of labels

Pool layout, redundancy, filesystem overhead, and reserved space reduce usable capacity. Two identically sized devices may provide fault tolerance rather than the combined capacity of both drives. Calculate the capacity you can actually use after the selected layout and leave room for growth; a nearly full pool is harder to manage and expand.

Cloud storage instead of local hardware

Why cloud storage is attractive

A cloud service removes the need to buy, cool, update, and remotely expose a home server. It can provide access from multiple locations, browser and mobile clients, sharing controls, and provider-managed infrastructure. This is often the simplest answer for readers whose priority is availability rather than owning the storage hardware.

What you trade away

  • Recurring terms and limits: plans can impose storage caps, sharing restrictions, bandwidth policies, or account rules that change over time.
  • Internet dependence: remote access and synchronization require a working connection, and a large first upload or restore can take substantial time.
  • Export and recovery: confirm how files, metadata, shared folders, and version history can be downloaded if you cancel or lose account access.
  • Control and privacy: a provider operates the infrastructure; review its account security, encryption, retention, and administrative controls.
  • Feature differences: synchronization, collaboration, mobile access, media serving, and recovery are separate capabilities. Do not assume a cloud plan reproduces every feature of a self-hosted NAS or vice versa.

A 2023 comparison brief from Synology presents advantages for its own product against public-cloud services, including claims about speed, privacy, and subscription fees. Those are vendor claims, not neutral market measurements; use the brief to understand the manufacturer’s position, then verify current terms and your own requirements.

Prebuilt NAS appliances remain a valid alternative

If you want drive bays, an integrated enclosure, supported software, and one manufacturer’s support path, a prebuilt NAS may be easier to maintain than a DIY host. Compare the complete system rather than the empty enclosure price: drives, memory, boot media, expansion units, power, and your time all count.

How to choose: a practical decision framework

Choose a mini PC when

  • You want a compact, quiet host and are comfortable adding an external enclosure if internal bays are insufficient.
  • You plan to run more than file sharing, such as media or home-server services, and want control over the software stack.
  • You can verify stable-release requirements, drive connectivity, cooling, and a recovery path before buying.

Choose an old computer when

  • You already own compatible x86 hardware with enough bays, ports, memory, and reliable power.
  • A larger case and higher potential power use are acceptable.
  • You are willing to replace aged components and learn the operating system rather than expecting appliance-level support.

Choose PC plus DAS when

  • You need more drive bays than a mini PC offers but want to keep the host small or replaceable.
  • The enclosure exposes disks in a way your NAS software supports.
  • You have documented how to recover if the host, cable, enclosure controller, or power supply fails.

Choose cloud storage when

  • You value managed remote access more than local ownership of disks.
  • You prefer a recurring service to hardware maintenance and do not need specialized local services.
  • You have checked account security, plan limits, export, recovery, and the effect of an internet outage.

Choose a prebuilt NAS when

  • You want an integrated enclosure and a supported setup experience.
  • You can justify the total cost of the appliance and drives for the reduction in assembly and troubleshooting.
  • The vendor’s drive compatibility, software lifecycle, remote access, and expansion options match your needs.

Setting up a DIY NAS safely

  1. Define the workload. List the users, file types, simultaneous access, media or application services, remote-access needs, and growth expected over the next few years.
  2. Inventory the host. Record processor architecture, memory, boot options, drive bays, SATA or expansion ports, network interface, power supply, and cooling condition.
  3. Select a stable software release. Use the current documentation for that release. Do not use development figures as stable-release requirements.
  4. Plan storage separately from the boot device. Follow the software’s boot-device guidance and choose a pool layout that matches the number and size of drives you can replace.
  5. Verify drive technology and workload ratings. Check CMR or SMR, continuous-operation guidance, warranty, and compatibility before installing the drives.
  6. Install and update locally first. Create administrator credentials, apply updates, configure the network, and test local file access before exposing anything to the internet.
  7. Configure sharing deliberately. Create separate users and permissions, avoid anonymous write access, and test access from each intended device.
  8. Design remote access only after local access works. Use the software’s documented secure method, protect accounts with strong authentication, and avoid opening unnecessary services directly to the public internet.
  9. Test failure and recovery. Confirm that you can replace a failed disk, restore configuration, and read an independent copy of important files. Record the steps while the system is healthy.
  10. Schedule maintenance. Check updates, disk health, pool capacity, fans, power events, and backup or export jobs. A NAS that is never monitored is not a dependable archive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Backup: the part an alternative NAS does not solve

A storage pool, mirroring arrangement, or RAID group protects availability from some disk failures; it does not create an independent backup. Fire, theft, malware, accidental deletion, a failed enclosure, or an administrator mistake can affect every disk in the same box.

Keep at least one independent copy of irreplaceable data, with a recovery method you have actually tested. That copy can be another device or a managed service, but it should not depend on the same host, enclosure, power event, or account. Decide how many historical versions you need and how quickly you must restore them. The exact arrangement depends on the household’s risk and data, so do not treat a particular RAID level or cloud feature as a complete recovery plan.

Costs and ownership over time

Do not compare only the price of a bare mini PC with a cloud subscription or an empty NAS chassis. A realistic local total includes the host, drives, boot SSD, enclosure or adapters, network equipment, electricity, replacement parts, and your time for installation and maintenance. A cloud total includes recurring plan fees, possible storage-tier changes, data-transfer constraints, and the cost of maintaining an export or independent backup.

Current prices and plan terms are volatile. The available evidence does not establish a universal cost winner, a power-consumption figure, or a performance advantage. Build a three- to five-year estimate using prices and energy rates for your location, then add the value of the features you would otherwise have to configure yourself.

Common mistakes and fixes

“The mini PC is cheap, so the whole NAS will be cheap.”

Fix: price the drives, enclosure, boot device, power, networking, and maintenance time. A small host can still require an expensive multi-bay enclosure.

“Any old desktop will do.”

Fix: check architecture, memory, controller and network compatibility, drive condition, cooling, noise, and continuous-operation costs before installing.

What current users are saying—and how much weight to give it

A TechRadar article dated July 31, 2026 quotes TerraMaster saying that “more than half” of surveyed DAS users already own a mini PC or older computer and install systems such as Unraid or TrueNAS. The passage does not provide the sample size or a separate survey year, so it is a vendor-reported survey finding, not an estimate of all home-computer owners.

The same article quotes YouTuber Zach Ferree: “For beginners, figure out your goal first. Scaling from there is just adding drives or moving to a bigger enclosure once you outgrow what you started with.” That is useful planning advice: define the workload and expansion path before choosing a host, rather than buying the smallest box and discovering that its storage connections cannot grow.

Bottom line

A mini PC or suitable old x86 computer is a legitimate NAS host, and a mini PC plus DAS can provide a compact, expandable layout. Use a prebuilt appliance when integrated support is worth the premium; use cloud storage when managed remote access is more valuable than owning and maintaining local hardware. In every case, choose the software and drives for the workload, verify the exact release requirements, budget the complete system—not just the host—and maintain an independent recovery copy.
