Short answer: scientists do not identify Nanotyrannus from size alone. They test whether the fossil had reached maturity, then compare bone microstructure, skeletal fusion, growth trajectories, skull architecture, teeth and evolutionary relationships. The latest major analysis, published in Nature in 2025, concluded that Nanotyrannus is distinct from Tyrannosaurus rex, lies outside Tyrannosauridae and includes two species: Nanotyrannus lancensis and Nanotyrannus lethaeus.

That conclusion overturns the interpretation favored by a 2020 osteohistological study, which found actively growing bone and treated the relevant fossils as juvenile T. rex. The disagreement explains why the question has remained open for decades: the same small-bodied fossils can look like young tyrannosaurs unless their development is reconstructed in detail.

The current scientific answer

The strongest current published result supports Nanotyrannus as a valid tyrannosaur genus rather than a juvenile growth stage of Tyrannosaurus rex. The 2025 Nature analysis combined comparative anatomy, growth modelling, ontogenetic character analysis, bone microstructure and a phylogenetic matrix built from firsthand examination of 120 tyrannosaur specimens.

That study placed Nanotyrannus outside Tyrannosauridae and separate from the lineage containing Tyrannosaurus. It recognized two species, N. lancensis and N. lethaeus, and estimated mature masses of approximately 700–1,000 kilograms. Those figures are study-specific estimates, not a universal body-mass measurement for every specimen assigned to the genus.

A Princeton University summary of the work likewise describes the small skull as belonging to a fully grown animal of its own species. The interpretation is influential, but it does not erase the earlier evidence that produced the juvenile-T. rex hypothesis. The most accurate way to describe the state of the question is that the 2025 result is the leading current conclusion, while the methods and specimen assignments remain subjects of scientific scrutiny.

Why Nanotyrannus was confused with young T. rex

The debate began with small tyrannosaur fossils, most famously the Cleveland skull catalogued as CMNH 7541. For decades, many specialists considered that skull and related material to be immature T. rex. A young individual of a giant species can naturally have a shorter, narrower skull and a different tooth arrangement from an adult, so apparent differences are not automatically evidence of a separate species.

The alternative interpretation is that the small skull represents a mature, smaller-bodied animal. Under that model, its proportions and details are not temporary juvenile features; they are characteristics of an adult species. Deciding between those explanations requires an independent test of age at death. If a skull or skeleton was still undergoing rapid growth, the juvenile interpretation becomes more plausible. If it was mature or nearly mature, the small size and distinctive anatomy support Nanotyrannus.

A 2020 osteohistology study reported bone microstructure associated with active growth and therefore supported synonymizing “Nanotyrannus” with Tyrannosaurus. Earlier summaries also pointed to a higher tooth count as a possible difference, while noting that tooth number can change during tyrannosaur growth. The disagreement is therefore not about one disputed measurement; it is about how several developmental and anatomical signals should be combined.

How scientists test whether the fossil was mature

Bone histology and growth rings

Histology examines thin sections cut from bones, often from weight-bearing elements. Under a microscope, researchers can assess vascularity, the organization of the bone tissue and cyclical growth marks. The pattern can indicate rapid growth, slowing growth near maturity or a fully mature condition.

The 2020 study interpreted relevant Nanotyrannus-associated specimens as having actively growing juvenile bone. The 2025 analysis interpreted the material as mature or near-mature. This is a crucial distinction because a small animal with juvenile tissue could simply be a young T. rex, whereas a small animal with mature tissue needs a different explanation unless the giant species had an unexpectedly unusual growth pattern.

Histology is powerful but not self-sufficient. A growth mark does not carry a species name, and a single sampled bone may not represent the entire skeleton. Researchers therefore compare microstructure with the age indicators visible in other bones and with the animal’s anatomy. The conflicting results from 2020 and 2025 show why sampling choices, specimen identification and interpretation all matter.

Skeletal fusion and developmental anatomy

As a dinosaur matures, joints and sutures in parts of the skeleton may close or fuse, and the texture of the bone can become more mature. Vertebral regions, for example, can preserve developmental information that a skull alone cannot provide. Researchers look for a consistent pattern rather than treating one unfused or fused contact as decisive.

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History identifies the growth status of the holotype skull as central to the case: “Showing that the Cleveland skull was fully grown is the key piece in demonstrating that Nanotyrannus is not a juvenile, but a distinct species from Tyrannosaurus rex.” In practical terms, a fully grown skull would make it much harder to explain the specimen as a temporary stage on the way to the much larger adult T. rex form.

Fusion evidence also has limits. Different bones can mature at different rates, and preservation can obscure a suture. Scientists therefore use skeletal fusion together with histology and growth modelling instead of assigning an age from one visible seam.

Growth curves and expected adult size

A juvenile T. rex should fit a growth trajectory that leads toward the very large adult body sizes known for the species. Researchers can test that expectation by modelling how quickly a specimen grew, whether its growth was still accelerating or decelerating, and what size it would be expected to reach if the observed pattern continued.

The 2024 review Taxonomic Status of Nanotyrannus summarized growth-curve predictions that were slower and strongly decelerating in the final years, with predicted adult masses around 1,500 kilograms or less. The 2025 Nature analysis produced a narrower mature estimate of roughly 700–1,000 kilograms. These values should not be treated as contradictory measurements of a single animal: they come from different models, datasets and assumptions.

Evidence source What it reported How to read it
2024 taxonomic review Growth curves summarized as predicting adult masses of about 1,500 kg or less A review-level summary of earlier modelling, not a direct weighing
2025 Nature analysis Mature Nanotyrannus estimates of approximately 700–1,000 kg The mass range inferred by that study’s model and specimen sample
Juvenile T. rex hypothesis The small fossils are immature animals on a trajectory toward the much larger adult form Requires the anatomy, histology and growth pattern to remain compatible with that trajectory

Body size by itself cannot settle the identification. A small skull could be a juvenile of a giant species or an adult of a smaller one. Growth modelling becomes informative only when the predicted trajectory agrees with independent maturity indicators and the anatomical differences remain stable rather than disappearing as the animal ages.

Skull architecture: a combination of characters

Researchers compare the entire skull, not just its overall length or outline. Features discussed in the taxonomic literature include:

  • the position and degree of concealment of the promaxillary and maxillary fenestrae;
  • the shape of the maxilla;
  • the form of the lacrimal horn;
  • the proportions of the orbit;
  • the breadth of the jugal;
  • the curvature of the orbital bar; and
  • features of the skull roof.

Each character can vary with growth, preservation or individual anatomy. The diagnostic argument depends on a combination that remains distinctive after those effects are considered. For example, a proportion that appears unusual in a juvenile may become typical in an adult, while a repeated structural difference across mature specimens is more likely to have taxonomic value.

This is why a visual “spot the difference” approach is unreliable. Photographs can exaggerate deformation, missing bone or differences in viewing angle. A formal comparison uses standardized landmarks, measurements and descriptions of the surrounding bones, then tests whether the pattern supports one species, a growth stage or several possibilities.

Teeth and tooth counts

Higher tooth-position counts in fossils attributed to Nanotyrannus have been one of the most frequently cited arguments for separating it from T. rex. The Australian Museum’s historical summary lists tooth number among the proposed distinguishing features, and the 2024 review discusses large anterior maxillary teeth and other dental characters.

Tooth count alone is not decisive. Tyrannosaurid tooth number can change during growth, and individual teeth may be lost, replaced or hidden by damage. A juvenile may therefore show a count that differs from an adult without representing a different species. Researchers must establish that the count and tooth shape remain informative after accounting for ontogeny, replacement and preservation.

Dental evidence is most useful when it agrees with the skull and maturity evidence. A distinctive tooth pattern in a demonstrably mature skull carries more taxonomic weight than a count taken from an incomplete or immature jaw.

Phylogenetic placement provides an evolutionary test

Anatomical comparison can show that specimens differ, but phylogenetic analysis asks a broader question: do those differences place the specimens on the Tyrannosaurus branch, or do they form a separate lineage?

The 2025 study assembled a character matrix based on firsthand examination of 120 tyrannosaur specimens. It combined skull, skeletal, developmental and other anatomical characters and placed Nanotyrannus outside Tyrannosauridae. That result separates Nanotyrannus from the lineage that includes Tyrannosaurus, rather than merely describing it as a small member of the same genus.

Phylogenetic results depend on the characters selected, how those characters are coded and which specimens are included. A tree is therefore not a substitute for anatomy or histology. Its importance here is that it tests whether the proposed differences form a coherent evolutionary pattern across many traits, instead of relying on body size or one unusual bone.

How a specimen would be evaluated in practice

  1. Establish the specimen’s identity and preservation. Researchers document which bones are present, whether they belong to one individual and which surfaces are damaged or distorted. A missing or crushed region cannot be scored as if it were normal anatomy.
  2. Assess maturity. Histological samples, bone texture and skeletal fusion are examined together. The key question is whether the animal was actively growing, nearing maturity or fully mature when it died.
  3. Measure growth-related proportions. Skull dimensions and other skeletal measurements are compared with growth series for tyrannosaurs. The goal is to determine whether the specimen fits a known juvenile trajectory or retains a distinctive adult configuration.
  4. Score skull characters. Researchers record fenestrae, maxilla shape, lacrimal and orbital features, jugal breadth, orbital-bar curvature and skull-roof anatomy as a set of characters.
  5. Evaluate the teeth. Tooth positions, replacement patterns, crown proportions and preservation are considered together. Counts are not interpreted in isolation.
  6. Run a phylogenetic analysis. The specimen is coded into a character matrix and compared with a broad sample of tyrannosaurs. Its placement is then checked against the maturity and anatomical results.

The conclusion is strongest when all six stages point in the same direction. If histology says “juvenile” but the skull and phylogeny indicate a separate lineage, researchers must investigate sampling and coding rather than simply choosing the more convenient answer.

What the 2025 result changes

Under the current leading interpretation, Nanotyrannus is not merely a name for an unusually small T. rex. It represents a separate branch with two named species, N. lancensis and N. lethaeus, and mature individuals substantially smaller than adult Tyrannosaurus.

The result also changes how small tyrannosaur fossils are discussed. Instead of assuming that every small skull is a juvenile, researchers must test whether it has mature anatomy and whether its character combination falls outside the Tyrannosaurus lineage. Conversely, the presence of a small skull is not enough to assign it to Nanotyrannus; a genuinely immature T. rex can still look different from an adult.

The 2020 study remains important because it identified the central challenge: actively growing bone can support the juvenile interpretation. Resolving the dispute requires reconciling that histological evidence with later maturity assessments, growth models and the larger phylogenetic dataset, rather than ignoring either side.

What cannot be decided from a photograph or a single measurement

  • Overall size: a small animal may be a juvenile giant or an adult smaller species.
  • Skull length: proportions change during growth and can be altered by crushing or distortion.
  • Tooth count: tooth number and replacement can vary during ontogeny.
  • One unfused suture: bones do not all mature at exactly the same time.
  • One growth ring: a single sample may not represent the whole skeleton.
  • A single phylogenetic character: evolutionary placement depends on a matrix of characters and the specimens used.

For these reasons, a museum label or online image cannot by itself settle whether a small tyrannosaur is Nanotyrannus or juvenile T. rex. The diagnosis comes from the agreement—or disagreement—among developmental anatomy, histology, growth modelling, skull structure, dentition and phylogeny.

Why the debate may continue

Taxonomic disputes persist when fossils are rare, incomplete or difficult to sample destructively. Histology requires removing a small section of bone, and not every important specimen can be sampled. Growth curves also depend on which individuals are included and how their ages and sizes are estimated. New specimens, improved imaging or reanalysis of existing material could therefore modify the details even if the broad 2025 conclusion remains influential.

The practical standard is not unanimity or a percentage of public agreement. It is whether a hypothesis explains the full evidence better than its alternatives. At present, the Nanotyrannus interpretation has the support of the 2025 combined analysis, while the juvenile-T. rex hypothesis explains the actively growing bone reported in 2020 and remains part of the historical argument.
