Nanopore sensors can detect molecules by measuring electrical-current changes as they pass through or interact with a tiny pore. Research has demonstrated disease-related targets in serum and blood, but these results are experimental: they do not establish routine clinical tests, continuous health monitoring in people, or a consumer device for monitoring disease.
How nanopore sensors detect molecules
A nanopore is a tiny sensing region made from a biological pore or a solid-state material. An ionic current flows through it. When a molecule passes through or interacts with the pore, it changes that current; researchers analyze the resulting signal to infer properties of the molecule or whether a target is present.

How the assay is designed matters. Some approaches aim to detect a target directly; others use recognition chemistry or amplification, or convert a target into a nucleic-acid probe. Those extra steps can help when a target is scarce, bulky, or difficult to distinguish in a complex sample. A 2025 review describes work on nucleic acids, proteins, peptides, and small molecules, while noting that portable point-of-care systems remain a goal rather than a completed transition to routine use (Journal of Nanobiotechnology review).

|---|---|---|---|
| ACS Nano, 2023 | ESAT-6/CFP-10 tuberculosis-antigen complex in serum from children evaluated for pulmonary TB in Cape Town, South Africa | Assessed serum samples from 75 children enrolled in a diagnostic study | A study of a possible nonsputum approach for pediatric TB assessment—not proof of an established or widely deployed clinical test. |
| ACS Nano, 2024 | Gentamicin in human whole blood; a separate in-vivo experiment in rats | Reported measurement in human whole blood within 10 minutes and continuous monitoring in live rats for approximately 2.5 hours without consuming blood | The human-blood measurement and the rat monitoring are different evidence levels. The animal result does not demonstrate continuous monitoring in people. |
These are results from particular experimental setups, not field-wide performance benchmarks. The studies do not establish an overall clinical benefit or population-level health outcome.

What the broader research does—and doesn’t—show
A 2025 review describes nanopore biomarker research spanning cancer, cardiovascular, neurological, metabolic, and infectious diseases. That breadth shows the range of targets under investigation; it does not mean nanopore tests for all these conditions are validated or available to patients.
A 2025 medRxiv preprint explores using the MinION nanopore-array sequencing device for microRNA analysis and discusses a possible early-cancer application. Because this is preliminary research, it should not be treated as a validated cancer-screening service (preprint).
Why a molecular signal is not the same as a diagnosis
Detecting a biomarker is only one part of a diagnostic pathway. A signal must be measured reliably in the intended sample, interpreted against clinically meaningful thresholds, and shown to help answer a health question. A biomarker result alone does not establish disease, clinical utility, regulatory clearance, or suitability for continuous monitoring.
Performance also depends on the target, sample, pore, and assay design. There is no standardized head-to-head comparison across the approaches covered here, so results from different studies should not be treated as directly comparable.
Technical challenges that remain
- Stability: Some biological nanopores rely on fragile lipid bilayers, which can limit stability as pH, temperature, or ionic strength changes.
- Complex samples and rare targets: Biological samples can produce nonspecific interactions and background noise, while very low-abundance targets are difficult to detect.
- Target fit and multiplexing: Fixed pore dimensions can constrain which analytes can be measured, and overlapping signal signatures can make it hard to distinguish multiple targets in one assay. These challenges are discussed in a 2023 review of nanopore biomarker analysis (TrAC review).
- Measurement accuracy: Modeling work on nanopore biosensors describes trade-offs between the accuracy and precision of concentration estimates; averaging a signal for longer does not necessarily make the estimate more accurate (2025 study).
Can you use one to monitor your health now?
The studies described here do not show that consumers can buy a nanopore sensor and use it to monitor disease at home. The MinION mentioned in the microRNA preprint is a research sequencing platform, not a validated personal health monitor. The current evidence supports nanopore sensing as a promising research approach, not as a routine personal or clinical monitoring option.
