Their effects depend on the particular formulation, nutrient dose, crop, soil and application method. They should be treated as an active area of research—not as a proven, general replacement for conventional fertiliser.
What are nanoparticle fertilisers?
“Nanofertiliser” is an umbrella term, not a single technology. It can describe nutrient particles at nanoscale, nutrients carried or encapsulated in nanomaterials, coatings or porous carriers designed to change release, and composite or otherwise nano-enabled formulations. Products may target macronutrients or micronutrients, and different materials can behave differently.

That distinction matters: a nutrient in a carrier, a coated fertiliser and a nanoparticle nutrient are not interchangeable. Their release mechanisms, application routes and potential risks depend on the formulation. A 2026 review in Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Engineering, “Smart nutrient delivery: the promise of nano-fertilizers for sustainable crop production,” surveys these varied designs and their proposed uses.

Researchers are investigating whether nano-enabled designs can release nutrients at a more useful time, concentrate them near roots or foliage, or reduce losses through leaching or volatilisation. Some formulations may also affect nutrient uptake or plant responses to stress. These are proposed mechanisms and possible benefits, not outcomes guaranteed by the word “nano.”

Performance can change with soil texture, pH and ionic strength, as well as crop biology, dose and delivery route. A formulation that performs well under one set of conditions may not produce the same result in another field. In some cases, faster dissolution or greater reactivity could increase nutrient losses rather than reduce them.
Do nanoparticle fertilisers work?
The most defensible answer is: some formulations have produced promising results, but broad, reliable field performance is not established. A 2025 review in npj Sustainable Agriculture, “Review of research and innovation on novel fertilizers for crop nutrition,” reports that one synthesis found only nine studies examining nanofertiliser effects on crop growth under field conditions. Field research has often focused on micronutrient formulations, and environmental measurements in field settings remain scarce.

A broader 2026 review in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, “Nano-agrochemical use in sustainable agriculture and environmental protection,” gives an approximately 20% crop-yield boost as a review-level estimate for nano-agrochemical formulations. That estimate covers nano-agrochemicals broadly, not nanofertilisers alone; it is not a prediction for a particular crop, product or farm. The same review reports that nano-agrochemicals account for less than 1% of the global agrochemical market, a category that includes nanopesticides as well as nanofertilisers.

The 2025 npj Sustainable Agriculture review concludes that field research is still needed before the technology can be considered ready for commercialisation on the strength of scientific performance evidence. That is a statement about the limits of the evidence, not proof that every nano-enabled product is ineffective.

Can nano-urea replace urea?
Not as a general conclusion from the available field evidence. The 2025 npj Sustainable Agriculture review describes a controlled field trial in Punjab, India, on soil without excessive background nitrogen. In rice and wheat, applying nano-urea alongside a reduced rate of conventional nitrogen was associated with a 13–17% yield decrease. In the comparison described, foliar dissolved urea and nano-urea produced no yield difference.
In that trial, the small foliar nitrogen application did not replace the larger amount supplied by granular fertiliser, and the comparison did not show a distinct yield benefit from the nanoparticle formulation over foliar dissolved urea. This is one trial with a specific location, crop and management setup; it does not establish the result for every nano-urea formulation or farming system. But it does show why claims that a small amount of nano-urea can routinely replace conventional nitrogen need close scrutiny.

Are nanoparticle fertilisers better than conventional fertiliser?
There is no universal winner established by the evidence. A fair comparison needs to account for the nutrient and formulation, the amount of nutrient applied, and the conventional-fertiliser baseline. It also needs to consider crop, soil and climate conditions, application route and timing, and whether the study measured yield, nutrient uptake, nutrient-use efficiency or nutrient losses.

Laboratory or greenhouse results do not by themselves demonstrate performance in farmers’ fields. For a useful field comparison, look for appropriate controls, replication, duration and clearly stated nutrient doses. If two treatments apply different amounts of nutrient, a yield difference cannot automatically be attributed to the nano-enabled formulation.

Are nanofertilisers safe for soil and food?
“Nano” does not mean inherently safe or sustainable. Any potential reduction in nutrient losses needs to be weighed against questions about the nanomaterial itself: how it transforms or moves through soil and water, whether it affects soil microorganisms, whether it accumulates in plants or food chains, and whether a dose causes phytotoxicity. The answers are specific to the material, formulation, dose, crop, soil and exposure route.
Reviews including the 2026 Nature Reviews Earth & Environment article and the 2019 Zulfiqar et al. review, “Nanofertilizer use for sustainable agriculture: Advantages and limitations,” identify environmental fate and food-chain effects as important concerns. The 2025 review “Micro/Nanofertilizers for Sustainable Agriculture: A Review” in ACS Applied Nano Materials also discusses formulation, dosage and phytotoxicity concerns. A claim of lower fertiliser loss alone is therefore not enough to establish a lower overall environmental risk.
How to assess a product or study
Before relying on a performance or sustainability claim, check whether it describes the same conditions in which the fertiliser would be used:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- What is the formulation? Identify the nutrient, material and design: for example, a free particle, carrier, coating, encapsulation or composite.
- What dose is being compared? Check the nutrient amount and conventional baseline. Equal nutrient amounts make it easier to distinguish formulation effects from dose effects.
- Which crop and conditions? Look for the crop, soil texture and chemistry, pH, climate or stress conditions, and other relevant growing details.
- How is it applied? Note whether the route is foliar, soil, seed treatment or another method, plus application timing and frequency.
- What was measured, and where? Separate yield, nutrient uptake, nutrient-use efficiency and losses. Check whether results came from laboratory, greenhouse or field work, and whether controls, replication and study duration are reported.
- What environmental evidence is available? Look for information on fate in soil and water, plant accumulation, food-chain exposure and effects on soil organisms—not just nutrient performance.
- What applies in your jurisdiction? Regulatory approaches and monitoring vary across agricultural regions. A scientific result does not establish that a particular product is approved or labelled for use in a particular country; check the relevant local authority and product label.
The 2026 Nature Reviews Earth & Environment review identifies harmonised assessment and life-cycle evaluation as research priorities. Until such evidence is stronger and more consistent, product-specific claims should be judged on their own data rather than general promises about nanotechnology.
