“Nanocoat” is not one standardized treatment for historic paintings. The term can refer to very different interventions, from coatings applied to a paint surface to nanoparticle materials used to stabilize a canvas support. Their results are specific to the material, artwork, and tests involved; none establishes that a generic consumer coating is safe for an old painting.
What does “nanocoat” mean in painting conservation?
It is a broad label, not the name of a single conservation material or universally approved procedure. A protective layer placed on paint changes the surface itself. A consolidant or deacidifying agent applied to canvas instead aims to address the support beneath the paint. These treatments have different purposes and cannot be treated as interchangeable.

That distinction matters because an artwork is a layered system: the paint, ground, canvas or other support, and any existing coatings can all respond differently to a treatment. A result obtained on one substrate or paint system does not establish safety or effectiveness on another.
What published studies have found
Nanocoatings for matte paintings
A 2016 contribution by Beccaria, Colombo, Gherardi, Mombrini, and Toniolo addresses nanocoatings for restoring matte paintings. The Politecnico di Milano repository record and its accepted manuscript document directly relevant scholarly work. This short contribution is not evidence of a consumer product or a treatment protocol suitable for every matte painting.

Materials studied for canvas support
A 2020 study in npj Heritage Science examined nanoparticle-based consolidants and deacidifying agents for painting canvases, comparing them with traditional products. The authors assessed factors including color, gloss, pH, drying, ease of use, stiffness, darkening, and whitening. Among the candidates in that evaluation, they reported calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide, and cellulose nanocrystals as the best-performing products; cellulose nanofibrils were also described as promising in view of their compatibility with canvas chemistry. These findings concern the tested canvas-support materials, not a ready-made varnish for the painted face of an artwork. Read the study.
Coatings for architectural painted heritage
A 2025 paper describes an experimental weather-resistant coating for ancient building paintings. Its formulation used nano-zinc oxide as a UV agent and a water-based fluorocarbon coating as a binder. Testing included slides and painted wooden boards, and the authors report research application at Xianyang Museum and Zhaoren Temple in Changwu. Those substrates and architectural contexts do not establish suitability for a canvas painting or another easel-painting system. Read the paper.

A graphene veil is a separate proof of concept
A 2021 study of graphene veils for preventing artwork color fading reported a protection factor of up to 70% for its specific experimental approach and said the veil could be removed with a soft rubber eraser in the study. That figure is not a general performance measure for nanocoatings, and the result should not be transferred to unrelated products or treatments. Read the study.

The word “nano” does not tell an owner whether a material will preserve an artwork’s appearance, remain stable, or be safely removable. Conservators and conservation scientists evaluate actual materials and their effects. The National Gallery of Art describes using analytical methods and accelerated aging to monitor conservation materials, alongside conservator assessment of handling and appearance; its work includes research on painting varnishes. For a proposed treatment, the relevant questions include:
- Purpose: Is the treatment meant to protect the painted surface, strengthen the canvas, or address another problem?
- Compatibility: Has it been studied on materials and paint systems comparable to this artwork?
- Appearance: What could it do to gloss, color, transparency, or cause darkening or whitening?
- Application and removal: How is it applied, and what evidence supports safe removal or retreatment?
- Aging: What testing shows about its behavior over time, and under what conditions?
A laboratory result, test on a model, or application to an architectural surface answers a narrower question than long-term performance on a particular historic painting. The reviewed publications do not establish a universal success rate, safe concentration, or durability period for a general “nanocoat” treatment.

Can you apply a nanocoating to an old oil or matte painting?
The evidence does not support a blanket assurance that any nanocoating is safe for an old oil painting, matte or otherwise. A material studied for a matte surface, a canvas consolidant, or a coating for painted wood addresses different conditions. Even a promising result needs to be considered in relation to the artwork’s materials and condition.

Do not apply an automotive ceramic coating, household surface protectant, or generic nano-sealant to a painting. The sources reviewed do not establish any of these as appropriate restoration products. Have a qualified paintings conservator examine the work and determine whether treatment is needed before anything is applied.
