Google positions Nano Banana 2.1 as the upgraded version of Nano Banana 2 (also called Gemini 3.1 Flash Image). The newer model is designed to improve realism, prompt adherence, multi-turn character consistency, text rendering and wide-image reliability while keeping Flash-level speed and cost efficiency. Those quality advantages are Google’s stated claims, not the result of a published independent head-to-head benchmark.
For API users, 2.1 is less expensive than Nano Banana 2 at every shared 1K, 2K and 4K output size. For Gemini Apps users, access works differently: Google labels Nano Banana 2 free and puts Nano Banana 2.1 behind a Google AI plan. The right choice therefore depends on whether you need the newer model’s documented controls and quality changes, the older model’s 512-pixel option, or the lowest API output price.

Quick verdict
- Choose Nano Banana 2.1 when text inside images, panoramic layouts, reference-image fusion, character continuity or configurable thinking levels matter. Google says it improves quality and realism at 1K, 2K and 4K, fixes tiling artifacts on wide and panoramic images at 2K and 4K, and follows prompts more accurately.
- Choose Nano Banana 2 when you specifically need 512-pixel output or want to use the free Gemini Apps option described by Google. It still supports the shared 1K, 2K and 4K API tiers.
- For API cost, 2.1 wins on the published figures. Its Standard image-output prices are $0.0336 at 1K, $0.0504 at 2K and $0.113 at 4K, compared with $0.067, $0.101 and $0.151 for Nano Banana 2.
- Do not treat API prices as consumer-plan prices. Gemini Apps access, download resolution, quotas and subscription terms are separate from Gemini API billing.
What Nano Banana 2.1 is, and how it relates to Nano Banana 2
Google’s stable model identifier is gemini-nano-banana-2.1. Google describes it as an update to Nano Banana 2, whose other documented identity is gemini-3.1-flash-image. The official model page lists its latest update as October 2026 and says the page was last updated October 6, 2026 UTC.

The available official material does not publish a controlled test showing how often 2.1 beats Nano Banana 2, nor does it provide a third-party score for realism, text accuracy or latency.

Both models are positioned in Google’s speed- and high-volume-oriented Flash tier. Google places its Gemini 3 Pro Image model above them for professional asset production, so 2.1 should be understood as an efficiency-focused update rather than a claim that every professional image workflow will prefer it.
Image quality: what Google says changed in 2.1
Higher stated quality and realism
Google lists improved visual quality and realism at 1K, 2K and 4K. The statement applies to the three shared API output sizes, so it is not limited to a particular resolution. In practical terms, a team deciding between the models should inspect the details that matter to its own prompts—faces, materials, lighting, small objects and layout—not assume that a vendor-level improvement will be equally visible in every scene.
Better prompt adherence
Google says 2.1 follows instructions more accurately. This is especially relevant when a prompt specifies several subjects, exact placement, a visual style and text at the same time. It remains a qualitative product claim: the official pages reviewed do not supply a pass rate, benchmark set or reproducible percentage improvement over Nano Banana 2.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →More consistent characters over multiple turns
Multi-turn character consistency is one of the named improvements. Google’s model page specifies support for character consistency for up to four characters. That limit describes the documented capability of 2.1; the reviewed documentation does not publish an equivalent numerical limit for Nano Banana 2. A workflow that repeatedly edits a scene with the same cast is therefore a clearer reason to test 2.1 than a one-off illustration is.
Text rendering and infographic layouts
Google specifically cites improved text rendering and infographic-layout accuracy. The image-generation documentation identifies infographics, menus, diagrams and marketing assets as examples of text-heavy work. This does not mean every generated word will be correct. It means 2.1 is the version to evaluate first when legible labels, headings or structured visual information are central to the image.

Fewer wide-image tiling artifacts
Google says 2.1 fixes tiling artifacts on wide and panoramic aspect ratios at 2K and 4K. The qualification matters: the statement is about those larger output tiers and those aspect-ratio problems. If your project uses small square images, this particular change may have little practical effect.

Google says generated images include a SynthID watermark. The watermark is a property of Google’s image-generation system, not a reason to assume that either model produces watermark-free files.
Resolution choices: 512 pixels versus 1K, 2K and 4K
The most concrete capability difference is the lowest output tier. Nano Banana 2 can produce a 512-pixel image, while Nano Banana 2.1 starts at 1K. A 512-pixel file can be useful for quick thumbnails, low-bandwidth previews, rough concept selection or high-volume experiments where final display size is small. It also gives Nano Banana 2 a lower-resolution option that 2.1 does not offer.
Both models share 1K, 2K and 4K API outputs. Use 1K when delivery speed, iteration count or modest display size is more important than fine detail. Use 2K when text, faces and object edges need more room. Reserve 4K for images that will be inspected closely or need substantial downstream cropping. Those are workflow decisions, not promises that one model will always look better at a particular size.
Gemini Apps download resolution is a separate rule. Google’s help documentation describes 1K downloads without an AI plan and 2K downloads with one. Those app limits should not be read as API output limits: the API documentation separately lists 1K, 2K and 4K generation tiers.

Gemini API pricing: 2.1 is cheaper at every shared size
The following prices are Google’s listed charges for image output. They are not consumer subscription prices, and they do not represent the total cost of a request that uses other billable features.
Recommended Free Tools
| API output size | Nano Banana 2.1 Standard | Nano Banana 2 Standard | Nano Banana 2.1 Batch | Nano Banana 2 Batch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1K | $0.0336 | $0.067 | $0.0168 | $0.034 |
| 2K | $0.0504 | $0.101 | $0.0252 | $0.050 |
| 4K | $0.113 | $0.151 | $0.0567 | $0.076 |
Google’s pricing page bases these equivalents on output image tokens: 1K uses 1,120 tokens, 2K uses 1,680 tokens and 4K uses 3,780 tokens. The table is therefore an image-output comparison at the listed tiers, not a guarantee of a fixed end-to-end bill for every application.
What the price gap means
At 1K, 2.1 costs exactly half the listed Standard price of Nano Banana 2. At 2K, the listed prices are $0.0504 and $0.101. At 4K, the difference narrows to $0.113 versus $0.151, a gap of $0.038 per image. Batch pricing follows the same direction: 2.1 is listed at $0.0168, $0.0252 and $0.0567 for 1K, 2K and 4K, compared with $0.034, $0.050 and $0.076 for Nano Banana 2.
Illustrative image-output totals
Multiplying the published rates by 100 gives the following image-output totals. These calculations exclude input charges, search-grounding charges and any other applicable billing.
| 100 generated images | Nano Banana 2.1 Standard | Nano Banana 2 Standard | Nano Banana 2.1 Batch | Nano Banana 2 Batch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1K | $3.36 | $6.70 | $1.68 | $3.40 |
| 2K | $5.04 | $10.10 | $2.52 | $5.00 |
| 4K | $11.30 | $15.10 | $5.67 | $7.60 |
Search grounding can add separate charges after Google’s shared monthly allowance. A submitted request may generate one or more individual search queries, so a grounded-image workflow can cost more than the image-output figure alone. Check Google’s live pricing terms before budgeting a production pipeline.

Gemini Apps access is separate from API billing
Google’s consumer product page labels Nano Banana 2 as free and says Nano Banana 2.1 is available with a Google AI plan. That plan requirement describes access in Gemini Apps; it does not mean an AI plan is required to call the API. API users pay according to the output pricing table and the other charges that apply to their requests.
Google’s Gemini Apps help page says images download at 1K without an AI plan and at 2K with one. The product is available only in the countries and languages where Gemini Apps is supported. Consumer quotas and subscription prices were not established in the published material used here, and they can vary by market or change over time, so verify the current product page for your location.
Which model fits your workflow?
Pick Nano Banana 2.1 for text-heavy or structured visuals
Start with 2.1 if the image must contain menus, labels, diagrams, infographic panels or marketing copy. Its listed improvements target text rendering and layout accuracy, the areas where a visually attractive image can still fail its practical purpose.
Pick 2.1 for multi-turn edits with recurring characters
If you are refining a story scene, campaign mascot or product cast across several conversational turns, 2.1’s documented support for up to four consistent characters is the more relevant specification. For a single image with no recurring subjects, that advantage may not justify changing an established workflow without testing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Pick 2.1 for reference-image workflows
Google lists reference-image fusion among 2.1’s changes and specifies fidelity for up to ten objects. That makes it the model to evaluate when you need a generated scene to combine visual cues from supplied references. The exact result still depends on the references and prompt, so assess the fidelity of the objects that matter to your project.
Best Value
Pick Nano Banana 2 when 512-pixel output is valuable
Only Nano Banana 2 is documented with a 512-pixel output tier. If your application creates small previews, avatars or rapid concept boards and does not need 1K, that option can reduce the amount of image data generated per iteration. The API price table does not list a 512-pixel price for 2.1 because the model does not support that tier.
Pick based on app access, not API assumptions
A Gemini Apps user who wants the free option described by Google should begin with Nano Banana 2. Someone who wants 2.1 inside Gemini Apps should check whether a Google AI plan is available in their country and language. A developer integrating through the API should ignore the consumer-plan distinction and compare the API rates, output size and any grounding charges instead.
How to evaluate the quality difference responsibly
Because Google has not published an independent controlled comparison, run a small, repeatable evaluation before migrating a real project. Use the same prompt categories for both models and judge the characteristics that affect your deliverable.
- Prepare representative prompts. Include a photorealistic scene, a multi-character scene, a text-heavy infographic or menu, and a wide or panoramic composition if those formats are part of your work.
- Keep the output tier comparable. Compare 1K with 1K, 2K with 2K or 4K with 4K. Do not compare a 512-pixel Nano Banana 2 preview with a 4K 2.1 render and call the difference a model-quality result.
- Record instruction failures. Note omitted objects, incorrect placement, misspelled text, changed character features and layout problems. This gives prompt adherence a concrete meaning for your team.
- Inspect wide images at 2K and 4K. Look for the tiling artifacts that Google says 2.1 fixes on wide and panoramic aspect ratios.
- Measure your actual economics. Count successful images, retries, resolution upgrades and grounding queries. The per-image output price alone does not capture the cost of a workflow that needs many reruns.
This method does not turn a small internal trial into a universal benchmark. It simply prevents a broad vendor claim from replacing evidence about your prompts, formats and acceptance criteria.
Important limits and changing details
- Google’s quality, realism, adherence, consistency and text-rendering improvements are vendor claims. The official sources reviewed do not provide a named third-party benchmark or measured quality advantage for 2.1 over Nano Banana 2.
- Model names, API prices, consumer entitlements and Gemini Apps availability can change. The model page cited here lists an October 2026 update and was last updated October 6, 2026 UTC; verify live documentation before publishing code or pricing.
- API output prices cover image output. Search grounding has separate billing rules, and a request can produce multiple search queries.
- Gemini Apps download resolution and plan access are not the same as API generation resolution or API billing.
- Generated images carry Google’s SynthID watermark according to the image-generation documentation.
Bottom line
Nano Banana 2.1 is the more capable and cheaper choice on paper for most API workflows: it shares 1K, 2K and 4K output with Nano Banana 2, adds documented improvements for realism, adherence, text, references and character continuity, and costs less at each shared API size. Nano Banana 2 remains relevant when 512-pixel output or the free Gemini Apps option is the deciding factor. Since no independent head-to-head benchmark is published, validate the difference with the prompts, resolutions and retry rates your project actually uses.
