Salar de Uyuni is one named salt flat on Bolivia’s Altiplano. Etosha is a terminal playa in the Cuvelai drainage system at about 1,071–1,086 metres above sea level, surrounded by protected savannah, springs and wildlife. Uyuni is a larger high-plateau salar used as a major transport route because its surface is exceptionally flat. Their areas, elevations, water behaviour and geological histories therefore need to be compared separately rather than treated as interchangeable examples of a generic salt desert.
The most comparable published figures also carry different dates and methods: UNESCO’s 2016 comparison lists Etosha Pan at 4,730 km² and Salar de Uyuni at 10,582 km², while a 2005 NASA feature estimated Uyuni at approximately 8,000 km². Those values should be quoted with their source and year, not merged into one supposedly definitive measurement.

What “Namibia’s salt pans” includes
Namibia does not have one single salt pan called “the Namibia salt pan.” The phrase covers multiple saline depressions distributed through different environments. Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy identifies pans along the coast, including Cape Cross, as well as inland examples such as Etosha. Its overview is available in the Salt pans publication.

Etosha Pan is the best-documented Namibian example for a direct landscape comparison. It lies inside Etosha National Park and forms the dominant open feature of a much larger protected area. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism says the park covers 22,935 km², but that is the area of the park, not the area of the salt pan. The ministry’s Etosha National Park page describes the park as being dominated by an expansive salt pan and several smaller pans.

That distinction matters whenever a size comparison is made. A statement that Etosha National Park covers 22,935 km² cannot be used to claim that Etosha Pan itself is 22,935 km². UNESCO’s 2016 tentative-list entry gives the pan’s lake-bed area as 4,730 km².
At-a-glance comparison
| Feature | Etosha Pan, Namibia | Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | One major inland pan within Namibia’s wider group of coastal and inland salt pans; located in Etosha National Park. | One named, extensive salar (salt flat) on Bolivia’s Altiplano. |
| Published area | 4,730 km² in UNESCO’s 2016 tentative-list comparison. | 10,582 km² in the same UNESCO 2016 comparison; NASA’s 2005 feature gives approximately 8,000 km². |
| Elevation | 1,071–1,086 metres above sea level, according to UNESCO’s 2016 entry. | The cited NASA page identifies the Altiplano setting but does not provide a comparable exact elevation figure. |
| Basin and drainage | Terminal playa of the Cuvelai drainage system in the Ovambo Basin; an endorheic setting with no outlet to the sea. | High-plateau salar in the Altiplano; the cited material does not establish an identical basin history to Etosha. |
| Geological history | Former lake or wetland system. UNESCO describes tectonic diversion of river inflow, followed by processes including wind deflation. | NASA describes geological history recorded by isolated islands within the flat, without presenting the same formation sequence as Etosha. |
| Water behaviour | Mostly dry and only rarely flooded during exceptional wet periods. | A saline flat whose exact seasonal water calendar is not established by the cited NASA feature. |
| Surroundings | Protected national-park savannah, springs and wildlife around the pan; some southern-margin springs are linked to groundwater from the Otavi Mountainland. | Open Altiplano landscape; NASA identifies the flat as a major transport route because of its level surface. |
How large are the two landscapes?
UNESCO’s directly comparable figures
UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre tentative-list submission from 2016 places Etosha Pan at 4,730 km² and Salar de Uyuni at 10,582 km². On that like-for-like comparison, Uyuni is a little more than twice the area of Etosha Pan. The UNESCO description calls Etosha’s 4,730 km² a lake bed that is mostly uninhabited, salt-encrusted extreme desert.
Use the wording “UNESCO’s 2016 submission gives” when quoting these numbers. They are figures in a comparative submission, not a timeless survey that overrides every later or earlier map.
Why another Uyuni number appears
NASA’s Earth Observatory feature published in 2005 estimates Salar de Uyuni at approximately 8,000 km². That estimate is smaller than UNESCO’s 10,582 km² figure by roughly 2,582 km². The difference does not by itself prove that one source is wrong: boundaries, definitions of the salar, mapping techniques and publication dates can all affect an area estimate. The reviewed sources do not provide a harmonized method that resolves the discrepancy.
NASA’s article, Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia, describes Uyuni as the world’s largest salar. That descriptive distinction is compatible with quoting the NASA estimate and the later UNESCO comparison, provided each number retains its attribution and date.
Do not substitute the park area
Etosha National Park’s 22,935 km² area is useful for understanding the scale of the protected setting, not for comparing the saline surfaces. A reader comparing 22,935 km² with a Uyuni estimate would be comparing a whole national park with a salt flat. The relevant Etosha surface figure for this article is UNESCO’s 4,730 km² pan area.
Where they sit: basin, plateau and elevation
Etosha’s Ovambo Basin setting
UNESCO places Etosha Pan at 1,071–1,086 metres above sea level in the Ovambo Basin. It is the terminal playa of the Cuvelai drainage system: water that reaches the closed basin has no normal river route onward to an ocean. This terminal position helps explain why dissolved salts remain concentrated as water evaporates.

Etosha is therefore not simply a patch of salt deposited on an otherwise unrelated desert floor. Its present surface is the end point of a drainage system and the remnant of a much wetter landscape. The basin setting also helps explain why a pan can be mostly dry yet still receive water in an unusually wet period.
Uyuni on the Altiplano
Salar de Uyuni lies within Bolivia’s Altiplano, the high plateau of the central Andes. NASA’s account identifies that regional setting and discusses landforms preserved as islands within the salt flat. The cited NASA page does not state an exact elevation for Uyuni, so it is not sound to place a precise Uyuni number beside Etosha’s 1,071–1,086-metre range and imply that both figures came from the same measurement.
The safest elevation comparison is qualitative: Etosha has a documented elevation range in UNESCO’s 2016 entry, while Uyuni is an Altiplano salar whose exact elevation is not supplied by the NASA source used here. That difference in evidence is part of an accurate comparison, not a missing detail to be filled with an unsourced number.
How the pans and salar formed
Etosha: a former lake or wetland and a diverted drainage system
Namibia’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism describes Etosha as a shallow salt depression that was once a large lake; its Namibia’s Key Attractions page provides that broader history. UNESCO’s geological description adds that Etosha was formerly a lake or wetland system and that tectonic changes diverted the rivers that supplied it. With the main inflow altered, the basin became a terminal, increasingly dry playa. Wind deflation then helped remove fine material from the exposed surface.
This sequence links three visible facts that can otherwise seem unrelated: the broad, nearly empty lake bed; the salt crust; and the rarity of standing water today. Etosha’s present appearance records a change from sustained water accumulation to a closed basin that is usually exposed to evaporation and wind.
Uyuni: a salar with geological features preserved inside it
NASA presents Uyuni as a salt flat in the Altiplano and notes that its geological history is recorded in isolated islands within the flat. Those islands interrupt what otherwise appears to be a continuous white surface, providing visible evidence that the salar contains older or more resistant landforms rather than being a perfectly uniform layer.
The available descriptions do not justify saying that Uyuni formed through exactly the same tectonic diversion and wind-deflation sequence documented for Etosha. Both landscapes are saline and basin-like, but similar appearance does not establish identical geological development. A careful comparison treats their formation histories as related only at the broad level of enclosed, evaporative environments.

Water, flooding and seasonal change
Etosha is normally dry
UNESCO states that Etosha’s 4,730 km² lake bed is mostly dry and only rarely flooded during exceptional wet periods. The qualification is important: “rarely” and “exceptional” rule out presenting the pan as a permanently wet lake or as a place with a predictable annual flood season based on the cited evidence alone.
Recommended Free Tools
When exceptional water does reach the terminal playa, the usually salt-encrusted surface can change dramatically. In ordinary conditions, however, the defining visual impression is an exposed saline floor within a dry landscape. The pan’s occasional inundation should be understood as an episodic hydrological response, not as evidence that Etosha and a seasonal lake are interchangeable.
What the cited evidence does and does not establish for Uyuni
Uyuni is also a saline flat, but the NASA feature used for this comparison does not provide a full seasonal calendar, flood frequency or water-depth sequence. It would therefore be speculative to assign Uyuni the same “mostly dry, exceptionally flooded” description used by UNESCO for Etosha, or to infer a month-by-month pattern for either site from these sources.
The defensible comparison is narrower: both surfaces can be discussed as large saline landscapes shaped by water and evaporation, while Etosha has a specifically documented pattern of being mostly dry with rare exceptional flooding. Any more detailed hydrological comparison requires measurements beyond the sources cited here.
Surrounding environments: protected savannah versus open high plateau
Etosha’s wildlife setting
Etosha Pan sits inside a national park whose surrounding habitats support wildlife and contain springs. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism’s park description emphasizes the expansive pan and smaller pans as part of a broader protected landscape rather than an isolated mineral surface. The result is a sharp ecological contrast between the open, salt-encrusted depression and the savannah, water points and animal habitats around it.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGeological information in Namibia’s Roadside Geology of Namibia — Etosha Pan links springs along the pan’s southern margin to groundwater from the Otavi Mountainland. Those springs help explain why wildlife can be concentrated around the pan even though the pan itself is usually too saline and dry to function as a normal freshwater habitat.
Uyuni’s Altiplano context
Uyuni belongs to a high-plateau environment rather than a protected savannah park. NASA identifies it as a major transport route across the Altiplano because its flatness makes movement across the surface possible. That is a different relationship between landform and people: at Etosha, the pan is a central feature of a wildlife-protection landscape; at Uyuni, the flat salar is also a conspicuous route through a broad plateau.

The sources used here do not support a like-for-like wildlife inventory or a claim that Uyuni offers the same spring-fed ecological pattern as Etosha. The meaningful contrast is environmental setting, not a ranking of which landscape has more biodiversity.

Etosha as part of a protected park
Because Etosha Pan lies within Etosha National Park, its significance includes conservation as well as geology. The park’s 22,935 km² area encompasses the pan, smaller pans, surrounding habitats and water sources. That protected context is why the pan is commonly encountered as one element in a much larger wildlife landscape rather than as an isolated industrial salt flat.

They do not provide detailed current access routes, opening hours, permit rules or visitor safety procedures, so those practical matters should be checked with the Namibian authorities before travel rather than inferred from the landscape comparison.
Uyuni as a transport surface
NASA specifically notes that Uyuni functions as a major transport route across the Altiplano because its surface is so flat. That statement describes a geographic use of the salar; it is not a complete guide to present-day roads, tour operations, vehicle requirements or access restrictions. The flatness that creates a striking visual horizon also gives the salar practical importance beyond scenery.
Do not turn NASA’s transport observation into an assumption that every part of the salar is uniformly accessible at all times. The cited source does not establish current routes, seasonal closures or local regulations.
How to compare the landscapes without creating a false equivalence
- Define the Namibian subject first. Say whether you mean Namibia’s wider collection of pans or Etosha Pan specifically. Cape Cross is a coastal example; Etosha is an inland example and the one for which the detailed UNESCO comparison is available.
- Keep surface area separate from surrounding-area figures. Use 4,730 km² for Etosha Pan from UNESCO’s 2016 submission, not 22,935 km² for the entire national park.
- Attach dates to Uyuni estimates. Quote 10,582 km² for UNESCO’s 2016 comparison and approximately 8,000 km² for NASA’s 2005 feature. Do not present either as an undated universal value.
- Compare elevation only where the evidence matches. Etosha’s 1,071–1,086-metre range is sourced; the cited NASA page places Uyuni on the Altiplano without giving a comparable exact number.
- Describe formation histories independently. Etosha’s former lake or wetland, tectonic diversion and wind deflation are documented by UNESCO. Uyuni’s islands record geological history, but the sources do not establish the same sequence.
- State water behaviour with its qualification. Etosha is mostly dry and only exceptionally flooded. Avoid inventing a detailed Uyuni flood calendar from a source that does not provide one.
- Include the surrounding ecology and human use. Etosha’s springs, wildlife and national-park protection contrast with Uyuni’s Altiplano setting and transport function.
Common mistakes in descriptions and captions
Calling all Namibian pans “Etosha”
Etosha is one pan system, not a synonym for every saline depression in Namibia. Coastal pans such as Cape Cross belong in the broader national category but have a different geographic setting from Etosha’s inland terminal basin.
Using “desert” as if it explains the geology
Both places can look like salt deserts, yet the label says little about origin. Etosha’s surface is a former lake bed in the Cuvelai drainage system, while Uyuni is an Altiplano salar with islands that preserve geological history. Naming the basin and formation context is more informative than relying on a generic scenic label.
Best Value
Reporting one Uyuni area without attribution
Readers may encounter both approximately 8,000 km² and 10,582 km². The responsible wording is to identify NASA’s 2005 estimate and UNESCO’s 2016 figure, explain that the reviewed sources do not harmonize them, and avoid implying a precision that the evidence does not support.
Confusing an occasional flood with a permanent lake
UNESCO’s description of exceptional flooding at Etosha does not mean the pan is normally covered by water. It is mostly dry. Conversely, the absence of a detailed Uyuni hydrology in the cited NASA feature is not permission to copy Etosha’s water pattern onto Bolivia.
Assuming the wildlife context is interchangeable
Etosha’s springs and savannah are part of a protected national-park ecosystem. The cited evidence characterizes Uyuni primarily as an Altiplano salar and transport route, not as a direct ecological counterpart to Etosha. A visual resemblance at the salt surface does not make the surrounding environments equivalent.
Bottom line: which landscape is larger and what makes each distinctive?
On UNESCO’s 2016 figures, Salar de Uyuni is larger: 10,582 km² compared with Etosha Pan’s 4,730 km². NASA’s earlier 2005 estimate of approximately 8,000 km² shows why the Uyuni number must retain its source and date. Size, however, is only the first difference.
Etosha is a documented terminal playa in the Ovambo Basin at 1,071–1,086 metres, a former lake or wetland whose river supply was diverted by tectonic change. It is usually dry, can flood in exceptional wet periods, and is surrounded by the springs, savannah and wildlife of a protected national park. Namibia’s salt pans as a whole extend beyond Etosha to coastal examples such as Cape Cross.
Uyuni is a single named salar on Bolivia’s Altiplano. Its flat surface forms a major transport route, and islands within it preserve parts of the region’s geological history. The available sources do not establish an exact elevation or a matching seasonal water schedule, so the most accurate comparison is not “two identical salt deserts,” but two large saline landscapes produced and used in different basin and environmental settings.
