Namecheap may be a good fit if you want domain privacy included for an eligible extension, but its first-year price alone does not tell you what the domain will cost to keep. Compare the same TLD’s registration, renewal and transfer prices, check any applicable fee at checkout, and confirm the rules for privacy and expiry. The prices below are a dated snapshot, not a guaranteed offer.
What this review can—and cannot—establish
This is a review of Namecheap’s domain-registration service based on its published pricing and support policies, alongside an independent review by TechRadar. No account creation, registration, transfer or support interaction is represented here as first-hand testing. TechRadar’s assessment is its own: read TechRadar’s 2026 Namecheap domain-registration review.

Namecheap’s published information supports a practical conclusion: it is worth considering if privacy is included for your chosen extension and the renewal cost works for your budget. It does not establish a universal best choice, because prices, privacy eligibility and transfer rules vary by TLD.

- Used Book in Good Condition
| .com charge | Price shown | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Registration | $11.28 | Compare the same registration term and TLD elsewhere. |
| Renewal | $18.48 | Use this recurring cost—not just the first-year offer—to estimate what keeping the domain will cost. |
| Transfer | $11.48 | Check that the domain is eligible to transfer and review the checkout total. |
| New-customer promotion | $6.79 per year | This is a separate offer, not the standard registration price; promotional terms can change. |
Namecheap says a $0.20-per-year ICANN fee applies to some domain registrations, renewals and transfers, and may be added to listed prices. Whether it affects your order depends on the domain and transaction. Premium domains may also have different prices. See Namecheap’s domain pricing page and its explanation of the ICANN fee.
Prices can change when registries raise their costs. Namecheap announced increases effective October 6, 2026, across 226 Identity Digital extensions. As one specific example, its notice lists .academy registration moving from $48.98 to $56.98 and renewal from $59.98 to $69.98. That example applies to .academy, not to all extensions; check the current price for the TLD you want in the price-update notice and at checkout.
Compare the full cost, not just the sale price
- Match the TLD and registration term across registrars.
- Compare standard renewal and transfer prices as well as any introductory offer.
- Check privacy availability and cost for that exact extension.
- Include applicable fees in the checkout total.
- Consider renewal timing and transfer eligibility before choosing a registrar.
Is Namecheap domain privacy free?
Namecheap says it adds a free Domain Privacy subscription by default for eligible registration, renewal, transfer and reactivation transactions. It is not available for every extension: registry restrictions exclude some TLDs. Confirm eligibility for your specific domain rather than assuming privacy is included. Namecheap describes the service as provided by Withheld for Privacy under its agreement with Namecheap. Details are in the Domain Privacy FAQ.
What happens if you forget to renew?
Namecheap says its system attempts to renew a domain 30 days before expiry. If payment fails, it retries every 24 hours until renewal succeeds or the domain expires. Its expiry guidance says that after expiry, service behavior can include changing nameservers, which can interrupt the website and email associated with the domain. The exact timetable and consequences can vary by TLD, so review the automatic-billing guidance, the domain-expiry guidance and the renewal rules for your extension.
Rank #3
Namecheap’s pricing page warns that some TLDs enter redemption unless renewed at least five or 12 days before expiry. The applicable threshold depends on the TLD; check the specific extension’s terms on the pricing page. Keep the account’s payment method current and do not treat an automatic renewal attempt as a substitute for checking that renewal succeeded.
Can you transfer a domain to Namecheap?
Namecheap’s general transfer guide says a domain usually must be at least 60 days old and must have been with its current registrar for at least 60 days before it can be transferred between registrars. Country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) can follow different processes. Check eligibility and instructions for your extension in the Namecheap transfer guide.
Rank #4
Be cautious about transferring shortly after renewing an expired domain: the old registrar may revoke the renewal, and the extra year may not be added. Confirm the timing with the current registrar before starting the transfer.

Namecheap is a reasonable candidate if your chosen TLD is eligible for its included privacy service and you are comfortable with the standard renewal price after any promotion ends. It may be a poorer fit if the renewal price or a TLD-specific fee changes the long-term cost, or if you need to transfer a domain that is not yet eligible.
Best Value
For a fair comparison, put the same TLD and term into each registrar’s pricing pages, then compare registration, renewal, transfer, privacy and the final checkout total. Check those figures close to purchase: Namecheap’s own published prices can change, including following registry price increases.
