Maharashtra minister Ganesh Naik said people he spoke with believed disputes over redevelopment in Manorama Nagar and Azad Nagar might be connected to the killing of Pradeep Purnekar. That is an unverified account of what others told Naik—not an established motive. Police were investigating multiple possible angles, according to a Hindustan Times report published October 3, 2026.
What Naik said about redevelopment
After meeting Purnekar’s family on October 2, Naik said people had described disputes over redevelopment in Manorama Nagar and Azad Nagar as a possible cause of the killing. In his account, the area involved was “spread over 160 acres.” The report attributes both the acreage and the proposed connection to Naik; it does not independently verify the size of a particular project or show that redevelopment was the motive.

Naik also relayed other explanations people had offered: that Purnekar had acted against a drug mafia, or that an upcoming parking tower in Thane was behind the murder. These were reported as claims from people Naik spoke with, not findings by investigators.

Hindustan Times reported Naik’s remarks on October 3, 2026. The figure should therefore be read as “160 acres, according to Naik as reported by Hindustan Times,” rather than as independently confirmed project data.

What is known about the killing
According to the report, Purnekar, a Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former corporator, was attacked in his Thane office at about 9:30 p.m. on September 29. The report says attackers shot him and also used a sharp-edged weapon.
What police had established by October 3
The report said a special investigation team was examining possible angles to identify the accused and determine a motive. It did not report that police had confirmed redevelopment, the drug-mafia allegation, or the parking-tower claim as the reason for the killing.

On October 2, two further suspects were arrested in Karnala, Raigad district, while allegedly trying to flee to Goa, bringing the reported total number of arrests to three. The two were remanded in police custody until October 8, 2026. An arrest is an investigative step, not proof of guilt; the report does not establish the responsibility of any named person.

Former Thane mayor Meenakshi Shinde denied any connection between herself or her family and the murder, and said she was ready to face police inquiry. Her denial, like Naik’s account of possible motives, is a reported statement; neither is a finding about responsibility.
