My Story of the Lionel No. 773 Hudson Steam Engine

The first thing you notice about a Lionel No. 773 is its scale. The 4-6-4 Hudson fills the display track with an unmistakable presence, yet identifying exactly which 773 you have can take more than reading the number on the cab. Tender lettering, wheel count, handrails, packaging and even a dated instruction sheet may place the locomotive in a different chapter of Lionel history.

That tension—between a child’s fascination with a “mystery engine” and an adult collector’s close examination—is the heart of the 773 story. As Don Miller wrote in the 773 Hudson Anthology in the Ozark Division Newsletter, 3rd Quarter 2023, “The 773 was truly a mystery engine.”

How the No. 773 became “The Hudson”

The postwar Lionel No. 773 debuted in 1950 as a 4-6-4 Hudson built to 1:48 scale. It was sold for one year, then disappeared from the catalog before returning for the 1964, 1965 and 1966 seasons. That gap is why two locomotives carrying a 773 identity can look related while belonging to different production lineages.

The concept reached back to Lionel’s prewar No. 700E scale Hudson, produced from 1937 through 1942. A TCA account attributes an estimated $65,000–$75,000 tooling expenditure to Joshua Lionel Cowen, based on longtime TCA member Art Hayes’s recollection. That figure is an attributed estimate, not audited corporate accounting, but it illustrates the importance Lionel placed on a large, accurately proportioned Hudson.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Collectors often call the postwar 773 simply “The Hudson” because it was Lionel’s large, coveted representation of the type. Its reputation comes from the combination of size, scale appearance and the many details that changed across production runs.

The 1950 original and the 1964–66 return

Identification point 1950 issue 1964–66 reissue
Production period One catalog year: 1950 Returned for 1964, 1965 and 1966
Scale and wheel arrangement 1:48 scale, 4-6-4 Hudson 1:48 scale, 4-6-4 Hudson
Typical tender 2426W, 12-wheel “Lionel Lines” deluxe semi-scale whistling tender 736W Pennsylvania tender; 773W New York Central streamlined tender is another documented configuration
Cab-number color described in collector references Silver White on later versions
Features Check the individual locomotive for its fitted equipment Configurations can include Magnetraction, smoke and an operating headlight; verify the specific example

The tender is often the quickest way to separate these eras, but it is not enough by itself. A replacement tender can make an otherwise correct locomotive appear to belong to another year, so identification should use several physical clues together.

My close-reading checklist for a 773

Start with the cab and frame

  • Read the cab-number stamping and note its color. Collector descriptions identify silver lettering with the 1950 archive example and white lettering on later versions.
  • Inspect the drive-wheel hardware and running gear for parts that appear changed, substituted or heavily worn.
  • Look for wire handrails and flagstaffs. Missing or replaced pieces affect both originality and completeness.

Then identify the tender

  • Record the tender number: 2426W, 736W or 773W.
  • Read the roadname rather than assuming it from the locomotive. “Lionel Lines,” Pennsylvania and New York Central correspond to documented configurations.
  • Count the tender wheels. The 1950 2426W is a 12-wheel tender, a useful check against a later or mismatched tender.

Check operating equipment

  • Test whether the smoke unit works and whether the headlight illuminates through the correct lens.
  • Determine whether Magnetraction is present where expected for that version.
  • Do not assume that every 773 from every year has identical smoke, headlight or control equipment; establish the production lineage first.

Search the packaging for dates

Boxes, liners, display boards and instruction sheets can be as informative as the engine. A documented No. 773-E example retained engine box 773-131, liner 773-130, a Super O display board with three track sections, an instruction sheet dated 8/64 and an unopened bottle of smoke pellets. Those items turn a loose locomotive into a traceable ownership story and can confirm a 1964-era package even when the engine has been separated from its original set.

Which tender belongs with a 773?

There is no single tender that belongs with every No. 773. Match the tender to the locomotive’s lineage, lettering and documented configuration.

  • 2426W: associated with the 1950 version, carrying “Lionel Lines” lettering and 12 wheels.
  • 736W: used with the 1964 version in a Pennsylvania-lettered configuration.
  • 773W: documented as a New York Central streamlined tender.

A locomotive and tender can be physically coupled yet historically mismatched. When comparing two examples, photograph both sides of the tender, the underside, the coupler and the cab stamping before deciding which is more correct.

How provenance changes the story

Condition matters, but provenance explains why an ordinary-looking box of parts may be more interesting than a freshly repainted display model. Keep photographs of every accessory, retain instruction sheets and record dates, sellers and prior owners when known. Original liners, display boards and unopened smoke pellets establish what was sold together; they also help distinguish a complete package from an assembled combination.

This evidence is especially valuable when a child’s remembered “mystery engine” is examined decades later. The memory identifies the emotional object; the cab, tender and paperwork identify its place in Lionel’s production history.

What is a Lionel 773 Hudson worth?

No authoritative, current price series establishes a single value for every 773. A responsible estimate requires a dated sale record for a comparable example. Before buying or selling, document:

  • Whether it is the 1950 original, a 1964–66 reissue or a later commemorative release.
  • Whether the tender is the correct 2426W, 736W or 773W configuration, including roadname and wheel count.
  • Original paint, lettering, cab numbers, handrails, flagstaffs and headlight lens.
  • Working smoke, headlight and Magnetraction where applicable.
  • Box, liner, display board, instructions and accessories.
  • Evidence of repainting, replacement parts, corrosion or motor work.

Do not treat an asking price as a market result. Inspect clear photographs and a dated completed sale, and state exactly what is included.

Replacement parts and restoration decisions

Searches for “Lionel 773 replacement parts” can return parts that fit physically but do not match a particular year. Compare the seller’s photographs and specifications with your locomotive before ordering. Confirm the tender number, roadname, handrail style, headlight lens, smoke-unit design and drive-wheel hardware. Preserve original parts whenever possible, even if a modern substitute is installed for operation.

For a documented 1950 or 1964–66 example, reversible repairs are preferable to repainting or drilling original metal. Photograph the engine before disassembly, label screws and wiring, and keep removed parts in the box with the provenance records.

Later commemorative chapters

The 1999 Century Club 773 and a 2001 final U.S.-made example assembled from remaining parts are separate modern-era chapters, not additional 1950 or 1964 production years. They should be identified as commemorative or late-production releases when listed or appraised.

A 2005 catalog configuration also documented a modern No. 773 in the No. 13150 Super O Steam Freight set with TrainMaster Command Control, RailSounds, a Pullmor motor and Magne-Traction. Those specifications describe that modern set, not a 1950 original, and should never be used to authenticate an earlier locomotive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was the Lionel No. 773 made in 1950 or 1964?

Both periods are documented: the first postwar issue was sold only in 1950, and the model returned for 1964–66. Tender, cab lettering and packaging help identify the exact lineage.

Is a 2426W tender correct for every 773?

No. The 2426W 12-wheel Lionel Lines tender is associated with the 1950 version. Later documented configurations include the 736W Pennsylvania tender and 773W New York Central streamlined tender.
