Home Assistant can handle voice control on your own hardware: local speech recognition transcribes your request, Home Assistant interprets it, and local text-to-speech can speak a reply. A mini PC can host those services, but it is the computer behind the assistant—not the room microphone and speaker. Nor does local voice alone prove that every smart-home feature will work through every kind of internet outage.
What “local voice” means in a Home Assistant setup
A local voice assistant is a chain of components, not a single AI model. A microphone captures speech; speech-to-text turns it into words; Home Assistant processes the request; and text-to-speech can generate an audible answer. In Home Assistant’s documented local pipeline, those voice-processing steps can happen at home rather than sending spoken commands to a cloud service. See Home Assistant’s fully local voice assistant guide.

Wyoming is the protocol Home Assistant uses to connect compatible local voice services, including Speech-to-Phrase, Whisper, Piper and openWakeWord. Those services can run on the Home Assistant machine or on another computer on the same local network, so the server handling home automation need not also do every speech task. Home Assistant’s Wyoming documentation describes that connection.
That architecture supports voice processing without relying on an internet-based speech service. It does not establish that every integration, phone feature or other optional service in a particular home remains available during a complete internet outage. The result depends on what else the installation uses.

Speech recognition: fast commands or open-ended speech
The choice of speech-to-text engine affects what the assistant can understand and how much computing power it needs.
| Engine | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Speech-to-Phrase | Recognizes a supported, bounded set of commands. | Home Assistant describes it as very fast, including on Home Assistant Green or a Raspberry Pi 4. Its limited command set does not cover open-ended tasks such as naming timers, shopping lists or broadcasts out of the box. |
| Whisper | Attempts open-ended speech transcription. | Better suited to less constrained phrasing or use alongside an LLM, but more demanding of the host hardware. |
Home Assistant’s local voice guide publishes example processing figures, not guarantees for a reader’s machine: about 8 seconds for incoming voice commands on a Raspberry Pi 4 using Whisper, under 1 second for Whisper processing on an Intel NUC, and 1.6 seconds of medium-quality Piper speech generated per second on a Raspberry Pi. These are Home Assistant’s figures under its cited setup, not independent benchmarks or measurements of a specific mini PC. The guide also cautions that voice quality varies by language. See the guide’s performance discussion.

A language model is optional—and separate from speech recognition
Speech recognition answers “What words did I say?” A conversation agent decides how to respond to those words. Home Assistant can handle ordinary home-control requests without a large language model. An LLM is an optional layer for more open-ended conversation; it is not required just to turn lights on or off by voice.

Device control is experimental, and only models that support tool use can control Home Assistant entities. The model can act only on entities exposed to it; it is not automatically given authority over the whole home. Home Assistant documents the Ollama integration and its limits.

For experiments with local Ollama models, Home Assistant advises exposing fewer than 25 entities. Smaller models are more prone to errors, so limiting the available controls helps keep the scope manageable. Give devices clear names, assign them to areas and add aliases when household members use different terms for the same device. For an LLM agent, scripts are exposed as tools rather than entities, making useful descriptions important. Ollama guidance and Assist best practices explain these recommendations.

The mini PC is a host for Home Assistant and, if it has enough capacity, local voice services such as Whisper, Piper or Ollama. Home Assistant lists mini PCs and NUCs as suitable host options, including for people who want to run Home Assistant alongside other services. That category-level guidance does not identify a specific processor, memory configuration or model that will deliver a particular response time. Home Assistant’s hardware FAQ covers host options.

A separate voice endpoint still needs to hear you and play the response. You can use the Home Assistant companion app, dedicated voice hardware such as Voice Preview Edition, or a custom ESPHome device. The endpoint is an input/output device; it need not be the computer running the assistant. Home Assistant’s Assist page lists these options.

Choose a setup by the job you want it to do
| Decision | Option 1 | Option 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Speech recognition | Speech-to-Phrase: quick recognition for a supported command subset. | Whisper: open-ended transcription with greater hardware demands. |
| Conversation | Home Assistant conversation handling: direct smart-home commands. | Local Ollama agent: more open-ended responses, with experimental device control and model/tool limits. |
| Where services run | On the Home Assistant host: fewer machines to manage. | On another computer on the local network: can move resource-intensive speech processing elsewhere. |
| Voice endpoint | Companion app: use a phone as the interface. | Dedicated or self-built voice hardware: provide a room-level microphone and speaker. |
Set expectations before calling it offline-ready
- Confirm that speech recognition, conversation handling and speech synthesis are configured to use local services if local processing is your goal.
- Identify any integrations or client features that still depend on an internet connection; the local voice architecture does not guarantee every service will work offline.
- Expose only the entities the assistant needs, especially when enabling an experimental LLM agent.
- Choose the speech engine for your command style and host capacity, rather than assuming that every mini PC will perform like the Intel NUC in Home Assistant’s example.
