VitaOS is an open-source home-screen replacement that turns a homebrew-enabled PS Vita into a single dashboard for games, films, music, photos, apps and downloads. It is free under GPLv3, unofficial, and requires HENkaku or Enso with VitaShell; it is not a Sony system update.
What VitaOS changes on a PS Vita
The stock Vita interface still organizes software as bubbles. VitaOS replaces that starting point with a fast, media-oriented shell. Its Home tab shows quick-resume snapshots, time, battery and weather. Play combines PS Vita, PSP and RetroArch libraries with box art, previews, collections, favorites and search.

Separate sections handle Movies with cover flow and resume support, Music with albums, artists, songs, liked tracks, shuffle and repeat, and Apps in a rearrangeable grid. Downloads connects to VitaHomebrewDB, while Files, Settings, Search, an on-screen keyboard, notifications, interface sounds and a live tilt-aware background round out the environment.

It can launch VitaOS at power-on, make the PS button return to VitaOS’s Home tab and return to VitaOS after a game ends. Without the plugin, the Vita continues to behave normally and VitaOS is opened from its bubble.

Who can use it
VitaOS is homebrew software for an already-modified console. The documented prerequisites are:
- A PS Vita running HENkaku or Enso.
- VitaShell for installing the package and copying files.
- Enough storage for the application and the media or game libraries you want it to scan.
The project describes itself as unaffiliated with and not endorsed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony trademarks remain Sony’s property.

How to install VitaOS
- Prepare the Vita. Confirm that HENkaku or Enso is working and that VitaShell launches.
- Get the release package. Download
VitaOS.vpkfrom the VitaOS project’s Releases page. - Install the VPK. In VitaShell, transfer the file to the Vita, select it and choose the install option. Wait for the bubble to appear.
- Launch the shell. Open the VitaOS bubble. On first launch it scans the card and builds its views from the content it finds.
- Add boot integration only if wanted. Copy
vitaos_ps.suprxtour0:tai/, add the plugin under the*mainsection ofur0:tai/config.txt, save the file and restart the Vita.
If you skip the plugin, no configuration-file edit is needed. If the plugin causes trouble, remove its line from ur0:tai/config.txt, restart, and use the VitaOS bubble instead.
Where VitaOS finds your content
The application rescans the card each time it starts, so organizing files in the expected locations is more important than manually importing them.

Large libraries can quickly exceed the capacity of the original memory cards. A model-compatible storage adapter may help, but compatibility varies by Vita model and current hardware listings; verify both before buying.

VitaHomebrewDB’s catalog page reported 1,289 entries in 2026: 1,013 PS Vita homebrews, 123 plugins, 126 PSP homebrews and 27 PC tools. The totals are mutable, and the page says listed entries had working downloads when counted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What to check when something does not appear
- A game is missing: confirm it is installed in the expected Vita location, or that PSP files are under
ux0:pspemu/PSP/GAMEand launched through Adrenaline. - Retro titles do not launch: install and configure RetroArch; N64 entries require DaedalusX64.
- Movies or music are absent: use H.264 MP4 up to 960×544 for video and properly tagged M4A files under
ux0:data/music/. - Boot integration does not work: check the plugin path, the
*mainline inur0:tai/config.txt, then restart. Remove the line if the system becomes unstable. - The interface looks unchanged: launch the VitaOS bubble first; automatic startup is optional and depends on the plugin.
The practical verdict
VitaOS is the most ambitious of the three approaches: it replaces the Vita’s starting point instead of merely sorting bubbles or installing homebrew. For a hacked Vita used as a combined game and media device, its unified search, resume views and library sections address the exact problem of an aging dashboard. Users who only need a downloader or folder cleanup should choose the narrower tools instead.
