The important distinction is whether the provider never delivered the event, your endpoint received it but failed to process it, or your system processed it without updating the business state you expected.
This account’s provider, failure cause, and tool are not identified here, so none should be guessed. Stripe’s documented behavior offers a useful, provider-specific example of how to investigate delivery and why a successful test is not proof of a complete live path.

What “silently failed” can mean
A missing order update is an outcome, not a diagnosis. Start by locating the break in the path from transaction to business action:

- No delivery: The provider did not successfully reach the configured endpoint.
- Delivery without successful processing: The endpoint received an event, but returned an error, timed out, or failed while handling it.
- Processing without the expected state change: The handler acknowledged the event, but downstream work—such as updating an order or queueing a task—did not finish as intended.
These cases can look identical to a customer or operator. They require different evidence: provider delivery records help with the first two; application logs and checks of the resulting business record are needed to investigate the third.

How to investigate a Stripe delivery problem
The steps and retry behavior here describe Stripe, not every payment provider. Stripe Support recommends inspecting the endpoint’s failed events and an individual delivery attempt, including its HTTP status and response. See Stripe’s webhook delivery troubleshooting guidance.
- Open the webhook endpoint in the Stripe Dashboard and inspect its Failed tab.
- Open a failed event’s delivery attempt. Check the HTTP status and response to see whether Stripe reached the endpoint and what it returned.
- Use that evidence to investigate the relevant layer. A failed request points toward delivery or endpoint handling; a successful response does not, by itself, show that downstream business processing completed.
- For timeout errors, check server health and application logs as Stripe advises. Look for work that is taking too long before the endpoint responds.
Separate failure conditions may need separate investigation. A delivery record can show what happened at the HTTP boundary; it cannot establish that an order, entitlement, or other internal state was correctly reconciled afterward.
Why a test event is not proof of a complete live path
Stripe documents ways to trigger supported test webhook events locally through the Stripe CLI trigger command. Its Webhook Endpoints API reference also describes registering and testing endpoints in the Dashboard.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. A test can verify a particular event and endpoint under test conditions without proving that the live deployment uses the intended endpoint configuration, event subscriptions, secrets, or downstream side effects. Treat production-path coverage as something to verify, not as an automatic result of seeing a test event succeed.

Acknowledge receipt quickly; do long work afterward
Stripe’s timeout guidance recommends returning a successful 2xx response promptly, then doing long-running work after acknowledgment. It specifically describes placing received events on an internal queue for asynchronous processing. In other words, keep the HTTP receipt step short and move slower operations out of the request path where appropriate.
This helps separate two questions: did the endpoint receive the event, and did the application finish the work triggered by it? A prompt acknowledgment can prevent slow downstream work from holding up the provider’s request, but the application still needs its own way to detect and handle processing failures.
Stripe’s advice is not evidence that the incident in this title was caused by a timeout. The actual failure mode would need to be established from delivery records, application logs, and the resulting business state.
Retries help, but they are not a monitoring plan
Stripe says it retries failed webhook deliveries, using backoff. Its documentation also says that if an endpoint remains unresponsive or returns errors for several days, delivery attempts can stop and the endpoint can be disabled. See Stripe’s explanation of webhook endpoint retries.

A retry is another delivery attempt—not confirmation that your application completed its business logic. Investigate both failed attempts and the absence of events your system expected. The cited Stripe guidance does not establish a universal alert threshold, so choose an operational threshold appropriate to your own transaction flow rather than assuming that retries will always surface a problem in time.

The tool mentioned in the title is not identified, and its capabilities or availability are not established. The useful design goal, regardless of implementation, is to distinguish transport success from completed business processing. When evaluating or building monitoring, check whether it can show:
- Whether an expected event was delivered, and the status and response for failed attempts.
- Whether delivery failures generate an alert that an operator can act on.
- How failed events can be replayed or otherwise recovered, if that workflow is supported.
- Whether it covers the payment provider and endpoints you actually use.
- Whether it observes downstream processing or only confirms that the HTTP endpoint returned a response.
The last distinction is central: a monitor of HTTP delivery may catch an unreachable endpoint, but it may not catch a handler that returns 2xx before later work fails. For that gap, connect event handling to application-level logs, queue outcomes, or checks that reconcile payment events with the business records they should change.

Build a failure check around the expected outcome
For each payment event that matters, define what should happen after receipt and how you will know it happened. Keep the evidence at each boundary distinct: provider delivery status, endpoint response, downstream job outcome, and final business state. That makes it possible to tell a missed delivery from a processing error instead of treating every missing update as the same webhook failure.
