My Passwords No Longer Leave My House: What Self-Hosting Really Means

Running a password vault at home can give you control over where its server runs, but it also makes you responsible for keeping that server working and recoverable. Kingsley Kanu describes using Vaultwarden, an unofficial Bitwarden-compatible server, with official Bitwarden apps. His setup illustrates the tradeoff; it is not a security audit or a guarantee that every deployment will behave the same way.

What Kanu means by keeping passwords at home

“My password vault runs on a box in my house now,” writes Kingsley Kanu in his article. He describes running Vaultwarden, a Rust reimplementation of the Bitwarden server API, and connecting Bitwarden’s browser, mobile, and desktop clients to a server URL he controls.

In his reported setup, the server runs on home infrastructure using Docker/LXC, stores its database in SQLite, and uses Traefik to terminate TLS. Those are details of Kanu’s deployment, not requirements or specifications for every Vaultwarden installation. His account also reports roughly 50 MB of resident memory for his configuration; that is not a general resource benchmark.

What stays under your control—and what does not

Self-hosting changes who operates the server and where it runs. It does not by itself establish that a deployment is secure, that its data is recoverable, or that third-party clients will always work with it.

Option Server location and operations Client compatibility and support Backups and recovery Cost evidence
Hosted Bitwarden service The service provider operates the hosted server; you do not choose a home server location. Bitwarden describes its official product and supports its clients in that context. Follow the service’s available account and recovery procedures. Kanu’s article gives a historical comparison of roughly $40 a year with a paid Bitwarden option; the year and current price are not established.
Official Bitwarden self-hosting You operate an official self-hosted server. Bitwarden documents different deployment paths, some with meaningful operational skill requirements. This is distinct from an unofficial server reimplementation; consult Bitwarden’s current documentation for deployment and support details. Bitwarden says self-hosters must establish their own backup procedures, with details depending on deployment method. A current total-cost comparison is not established in the cited sources.
Vaultwarden with Bitwarden clients You operate a non-official Bitwarden-compatible server, potentially on hardware at home as Kanu does. Bitwarden says it expects much client functionality to work with non-official servers, but does not guarantee perfect operation and may offer limited support for client issues. You are responsible for backup and recovery of the server’s data and related configuration. A current total-cost comparison is not established in the cited sources.

The table distinguishes running Bitwarden’s documented self-hosted product from running Vaultwarden. Both involve operator responsibilities, but one should not be treated as the other.

Encryption claims need the right scope

Bitwarden says its official clients encrypt or hash data locally before transmission, and its documentation describes vault data in Bitwarden’s official cloud and self-hosted products as end-to-end encrypted. Its encryption documentation describes AES-CBC with 256-bit keys and HMAC-SHA256. These are Bitwarden’s claims about its documented product; they are not an independent evaluation of Vaultwarden and do not prove that a particular home server is secure.

Keeping a server in your home is a location and control choice, not a substitute for sound security practices. The server, network exposure, configuration, updates, client behavior, and recovery plan all matter. Kanu’s account should be read as a description of his architecture and priorities, not as proof that another person’s setup has the same protections.

Backups are part of running the vault

The database is the essential store in Kanu’s account. He says he created daily snapshots before relying on the vault, then kept an encrypted off-site copy using rclone and Backblaze B2. He notes that another copy in the same building would not protect against a house-level disaster. This is his reported method; the account does not independently verify that a restore succeeds.

Bitwarden’s backup guidance for self-hosters likewise places backup responsibility on the operator and advises regularly backing up important data, including configuration and database-related data. Exact requirements depend on how the server is deployed. A backup plan is only useful if it covers the data and configuration needed for recovery and you know how to restore it.

  • Keep a backup destination separate from the server itself; for house-level risks, consider an encrypted off-site copy.
  • Include the relevant configuration as well as the database, following the instructions for your deployment method.
  • Have a recovery procedure rather than relying on the existence of backup files alone.

Compatibility is not a guarantee

Vaultwarden is not an official Bitwarden server. Bitwarden’s FAQ on non-official servers says it expects much client functionality to work, but cannot guarantee perfect operation and may provide limited support when a client issue involves a non-official server. Compatibility can vary as clients and servers change, so check current compatibility information and keep the server maintained before depending on this arrangement.

Using official clients therefore does not make the server official, nor does it ensure that every feature or future client update will work as expected with Vaultwarden. That boundary matters if dependable vendor support is a priority.

Choosing between hosted, official self-hosted, and Vaultwarden

The decision is less about whether one option is universally safer or cheaper and more about which responsibilities you want to own.

  • Choose a hosted service if you prefer not to maintain the server and want to use the vendor’s supported hosted product.
  • Consider official Bitwarden self-hosting if server-location control matters and you want Bitwarden’s documented self-hosted product, while accepting deployment and backup work.
  • Consider Vaultwarden if you specifically want its non-official server implementation and accept the compatibility and support boundary, along with the work of updates, backups, and recovery.

Kanu also reports comparing his arrangement with a paid Bitwarden option at roughly $40 per year. The article’s year is not verified, so that figure should not be treated as a current price or a complete cost comparison. A home setup has operational costs and responsibilities that the reported figure does not quantify.

What this example can—and cannot—tell you

Kanu’s experience shows one way to keep a vault server on home hardware while using Bitwarden clients. It also makes the central exchange clear: greater control over server location comes with the job of operating and recovering the service. Whether that exchange suits you depends on your comfort with maintenance, the value you place on official compatibility and support, and the quality of the recovery arrangements you are prepared to maintain.
