Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn old router can still be useful, but only if its exact model supports the firmware you plan to install and the job fits its hardware and network. “Wiping the firmware” can mean several different things: clearing settings, installing different firmware, or recovering a corrupted installation. Those are not interchangeable fixes. Without the router model, hardware revision, or the job in question, there is no safe device-specific flashing recipe—but there is a sensible way to decide whether the project is worth attempting.
First, work out what “wiped its firmware” means
People often use “wipe” loosely, but router maintenance has distinct paths. OpenWrt’s reset and recovery documentation distinguishes clearing configuration, using failsafe access, and recovering a router whose firmware is corrupted. Choose based on the router’s actual condition, not on the wording of a generic guide. OpenWrt: failsafe and factory reset

- Configuration reset: Erases settings and installed packages to return the router to a clean configuration. It does not mean that replacement firmware has been installed.
- Failsafe: Provides a basic way to access a router after a configuration problem. It is not a general repair tool: OpenWrt cautions that failsafe cannot fix faulty hardware or a broken kernel.
- Firmware recovery: Used when firmware is corrupted and the device needs firmware installed again. Recovery procedures depend on the model.
- Firmware upgrade or replacement: Installs a firmware image. The correct image and method are device-specific; do not assume that an image for a similar-looking router is safe.
If the router still runs normally and the problem is a bad configuration, a reset may be the appropriate starting point. If it cannot boot or its firmware is corrupted, consult the recovery instructions for the exact device. A reset, failsafe, and reflash are not substitutes for one another.

Check exact-device support before choosing firmware
For OpenWrt, use the official Firmware Selector and enter the router’s precise device name or model. Check the hardware revision as well: a product name can cover multiple versions, and support for one does not establish support for another. The selector offers stable and snapshot builds, but build availability alone does not tell you which installation procedure applies to your particular router. OpenWrt Firmware Selector

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Find the model and hardware revision on the router’s label or in its administration interface.
- Look up that exact device in the OpenWrt Firmware Selector and verify the matching instructions for installing or recovering firmware.
- Choose an image and follow the device-specific process rather than borrowing steps from a different model.
- Before changing anything, identify the correct recovery instructions for that device in case the installation fails.
OpenWrt describes itself as an extensible GNU/Linux distribution for embedded devices, typically wireless routers, and provides documentation for upgrading home routers. That makes it one possible context for this kind of project; it does not establish that every older router supports OpenWrt or that it was the firmware used in this story. Choose one network job the router can actually perform
“Give it one job” is a useful constraint: start with the network role you need instead of reinstalling firmware without a purpose. OpenWrt documentation describes client, router, and gateway configurations. Depending on the device and network, a client configuration can use Wi-Fi or Ethernet ports for a specific function. The right arrangement depends on how the spare router connects to the rest of your network. OpenWrt network configuration

Client device
A client setup may let the router connect to an existing network and provide Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity for another device or segment. Confirm the intended connections and configuration for the exact model; “client” does not by itself specify whether the link is wired, wireless, or bridged.

Router behind an existing router
Adding a second router behind the household router can create double NAT. OpenWrt warns that this can cause problems for some traffic scenarios. If the purpose is simply to extend connectivity, check whether the intended setup needs routing or whether another network arrangement is more appropriate. Do not assume that placing a second router in the chain is consequence-free.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Gateway
A gateway configuration is another distinct role described in OpenWrt’s guidance. It changes how traffic is routed through the device, so it should be selected only when that is the role the network actually requires—not as a generic setting for making an old router useful.
Know what a firmware change does not prove
Finding a supported firmware image does not establish that an old router will deliver a particular speed, improve security, become more reliable, or remain useful for a particular length of time. Those outcomes depend on the specific device, its condition, configuration, and workload; no model or test results are established here. Treat compatibility as a prerequisite, not as a performance guarantee.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Likewise, a reset or reflash cannot repair unsuitable hardware. If the device is unsupported, damaged, or does not meet the requirements of its intended task, another firmware path is not a substitute for a suitable router.
When replacement hardware makes sense
Consider a replacement only if the existing unit is unsupported or unsuitable for the job. Before choosing a new device, verify its exact model and hardware revision in the OpenWrt Firmware Selector rather than relying on a product family name. The OpenWrt One is a physical router designed by the OpenWrt project and described by the project as shipping with OpenWrt; that is an option to investigate, not evidence that this project requires new hardware.
