The only way to know is to look up your exact model’s update status and support end date, then decide whether to keep, repair or replace it.
None of this means an older phone is compromised. Age alone proves nothing, and neither does smooth performance. It means that once vendor updates stop, newly discovered flaws may never get an official fix.

Why “it works fine” tells you so little
Speed, screen condition and battery are all things you notice. Security patches are not. A vulnerability fix arrives silently, and so does its absence. That is why a phone can feel perfect on the day its manufacturer stops issuing fixes for it.

The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) puts the consequence plainly in its Android guidance: “Once a device reaches end-of-life, it will no longer receive security updates and should be replaced to maintain security standards.” That is official guidance on security standards. It is not a claim that every unsupported phone has been attacked, and the NCSC doesn’t give a likelihood of attack for an individual device.

Two kinds of updates that get confused
Upgrades versus security updates
Apple’s support documentation (“About software updates for Apple devices”) separates minor updates, which patch or improve the current operating system, from upgrades, which bring larger functional or interface changes. It also notes: “Older devices may not be eligible for upgrades if they don’t have the necessary hardware capabilities to support the new software.”
So missing the newest major version does not automatically mean you get no patches, and getting a new version does not automatically mean your phone is protected. Check the exact vendor’s policy for your exact device. Apple also states that Background Security Improvements are delivered only for the latest versions of the operating systems it lists, which is another reason the version number matters.

Support periods are model-specific
Google’s Pixel Help page (“Learn when you’ll get software updates on Google Pixel phones”) lists support by model. For the Pixel Fold, Pixel 7a, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6 and Pixel 6a, it states five years of OS and security updates, counted from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US. It also says listed Pixel 5a and earlier models no longer receive Android-version or security updates.
That five-year figure applies to those named Pixels and Google’s counting method. It says nothing about other brands. For them, Google’s own instruction is: “If you have another Android device, contact your manufacturer or carrier for update info.” The NCSC likewise describes Android support as varying, with most devices and many brands falling somewhere between up to 3 years and up to 7 years. That is a general range, not a promise for any particular handset.

How to check your own phone
- Identify the exact model. On iPhone, look in Settings > General > About. On Android, look in Settings > About phone. Note the full model name, not just the brand. Menu labels vary by manufacturer.
- Check what the phone is running. On iPhone, Settings > General > Software Update shows whether anything is pending. On Android, the About phone area typically shows the Android version and a security update date. On Pixels, updates are under Settings > System > Software updates.
- Find the manufacturer’s published end date. Look for the support or update policy page for your model. Google’s Android Enterprise Recommended program requires participating manufacturers to publish a security-support end date and how often they update. Not every consumer phone is enrolled in that program, so if you can’t find a date, ask the manufacturer or carrier directly.
- Compare the dates. If the security update date on your phone is well behind today’s date and the manufacturer lists no further updates, you are out of support. If a date is still ahead, you have a known runway to plan around.
If you can’t find any published commitment at all, treat that as an answer about how much the vendor will stand behind the phone, not as proof of safety.
What end of support does and doesn’t mean
- It does mean that vulnerabilities found in the operating system or device software may not get an official fix from the vendor.
- It doesn’t mean the phone is infected, that it will stop working, or that a particular attack is likely against you.
- It may also affect compatibility, since apps and services can eventually require newer system software. Whether that is happening depends on the specific apps you use, so test the ones you depend on rather than assuming.
The Federal Trade Commission’s 2018 Mobile Security Updates report is useful background on how murky update disclosure once was, but it is dated and should not be read as a current statistic on unsupported phones.

If the real problem is battery, not security
Apple’s battery guidance separates battery life (how long a charge lasts) from battery lifespan (how long before the battery itself needs replacing). That distinction helps you diagnose what you are actually unhappy about. If runtime is the complaint, Apple suggests lowering screen brightness, using Wi-Fi where available and turning on Low Power Mode.

A phone with a fresh battery and no security patches is still out of support. Whether a battery swap is possible or worth the cost depends on your model and local repair options, and no universal price or battery-health threshold applies. Keep, repair or replace: a decision guide
| Your situation | Reasonable move |

| Still inside the published support window, runtime fine | Keep it. Note the end date and plan ahead. |
| Still supported, but battery drains too fast | Try the runtime settings first, then price a battery replacement for your model. |
| Support ended, used lightly, with little sensitive activity | Your call, informed by the NCSC advice to replace. Keep the software as current as it allows and don’t treat it as a primary device. |
| Support ended, and it holds banking, work email, or two-factor codes | Replacement is the better choice, in line with the NCSC’s guidance. |
| Support ended and key apps are failing or demanding newer software | Replace. A battery swap won’t solve this. |
The evidence doesn’t establish a single safe number of years or a universal best option. The deciding factors are the security gap, the apps and accounts you rely on, battery condition, repair availability and how much risk you are comfortable with.
A sensible way to retire a phone
If you replace it, back up what you want to keep, sign out of your accounts and wipe the device before passing it on or recycling it. If you keep an unsupported phone as a backup or secondary device, avoid putting your most sensitive accounts on it.
