He attributed his stance to his mother’s advice to stay away from Pakistan politics and the board, while saying he still wants Pakistan cricket to improve.
What did Shoaib Akhtar say about the PCB role?
According to reports quoting Akhtar’s remarks on PTV Sports, he called the chief-selector claims speculative and false. Hindustan Times quoted him as saying, “I am not at all interested in going to the PCB,” and that he had heard reports about taking on the role but considered them “fake.”
Akhtar also said he would like to serve Pakistan cricket, but believed he could do so in other ways. Press Trust of India, in a report published by The Economic Times, quoted him saying: “My mother told me to stay away from Pakistan politics and the PCB and I am going to stick to that advice.”
Is Akhtar being appointed Pakistan’s chief selector?
No appointment is confirmed in the reports available on 3 October 2026. The chief-selector role was discussed as speculation, and Akhtar denied wanting a PCB position. The cited reports do not include a PCB announcement or an offer to him.

Did Akhtar meet PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi?
Some reports described claims that Akhtar had met PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi or been offered a major role, but those claims should not be treated as established fact. PTI reported that no chief-selector offer had been made and noted that Akhtar did not say whether he had recently met Naqvi.
Why did the reports emerge?
Hindustan Times placed the speculation amid discussion of a possible coaching and selection reshuffle after Pakistan lost a three-match Test series against England 0–3. The report described Akhtar as a leading candidate in the speculation; it did not establish that the PCB had begun a formal appointment process.
