A shallow dish of apple-cider vinegar, one or two drops of liquid dish soap, and a tight plastic-wrap cover can catch adult fruit flies quickly. The trap works best when paired with sanitation: remove the food and moisture where the next generation is developing. University of Maryland Extension identifies sanitation as the primary control, while its 2024 guidance supports this vinegar-trap recipe.
Make the apple-cider-vinegar trap
Use a small glass, jar, or shallow dish. Pour in enough apple-cider vinegar to cover the bottom, then add only a drop or two of liquid dishwashing soap. Stretch plastic wrap tightly over the opening and secure it. Poke a few tiny holes in the film and place the trap beside the swarm, such as near a fruit bowl, recycling container, or sink.

- Pour apple-cider vinegar into the container until the bottom is covered.
- Add one or two drops of liquid dish soap. Do not flood the bait with soap; too much can make the vinegar less attractive.
- Pull plastic wrap tightly over the opening and secure it.
- Poke several very small holes through the wrap.
- Set the trap close to the flies and replace the bait when it becomes dirty or stops catching insects.
University of Maryland Extension gives the first four steps in its fruit-fly control guidance. Ask Extension describes the same basic mechanism: flies enter through the holes but have difficulty escaping.
Why one drop of soap changes the trap
Fermenting odors from apple-cider vinegar resemble the smells that attract adult fruit flies to overripe produce, wine, beer, fruit juice, and vinegar. The vinegar is the bait; the plastic wrap creates a narrow entry route.

Nebraska Extension explains that dish soap acts as a surfactant, reducing the liquid’s surface tension. A fly that lands on the vinegar is therefore less likely to remain on the surface and can sink into the liquid. The soap is not a repellent or poison, so adding more does not automatically improve the trap.
Sanitation stops the next generation
A trap removes flying adults, but it does not remove eggs or larvae already growing in a damp or fermenting food source. University of Maryland Extension calls sanitation “the primary control for fruit flies.” Work through the kitchen systematically:

- Refrigerate ripe fruit and vegetables, and discard produce that is overripe or leaking.
- Empty fermenting liquids and clean residue from bottles, cans, jars, and recycling bins.
- Rinse bottles and cans before placing them in recycling.
- Clean spills under appliances, around trash containers, and beneath fruit bowls.
- Dry damp mops, dishcloths, and towels instead of leaving them bunched up.
- Check forgotten onions, potatoes, fruit, and beverage containers in cupboards or drawers.
The timing matters. University of Maryland Extension reports that fruit flies can complete their entire life cycle in 8 to 10 days, with larvae feeding for 5 to 6 days before pupating. A single cleaning session may miss a later wave, so keep checking food, recycling, and damp areas during the following week and refresh the trap as needed.
Confirm that they are fruit flies
Adult fruit flies are about 1/8 inch long and commonly have bright red eyes. They gather around ripe or fermenting foods and liquids. If the insects are larger, look different, or concentrate around a drain rather than food, identify them before relying on a vinegar trap.

When the problem may be drain flies
Ask Extension recommends checking the sink’s P-trap or U-bend when drain flies are suspected. The water seal in that bend helps stop insects from coming up through the drain. If the trap is dry, run water to restore the seal, then clean the drain area and investigate organic buildup. A food-focused fruit-fly trap will not remove a drain-breeding source.
Homemade trap versus a commercial trap
Extension guidance supports both homemade and commercial fruit-fly traps. The important distinction is that either option targets adult insects; sanitation addresses the breeding source.

- Replace the bait and move the trap next to the area with the most activity.
- Inspect every fruit and vegetable, including items stored outside the refrigerator.
- Rinse recycling and scrub sticky residue inside bins and under liners.
- Dry towels and mops, then check for spills under appliances and furniture.
- Check whether the insects are coming from a drain; if so, inspect the P-trap or U-bend water seal.
- Continue sanitation checks through at least one 8-to-10-day life cycle, because larvae may emerge after the first cleanup.

Will the vinegar trap eliminate fruit flies by itself?
No. It catches adults, while sanitation removes the food, liquid, and moisture where eggs and larvae develop.
Why are flies still appearing after I set the trap?
A breeding source may remain, or the insects may be drain flies rather than fruit flies. Recheck produce, recycling, spills, damp cloths, and the sink P-trap or U-bend.
