The fastest way to improve is not memorizing a tier list. Learn your character’s Quirks in Training Mode, keep Guard Points (GP) filled, communicate item and enemy locations, and leave losing fights before your health is critical.
What a match is and what beginners should prioritize
Bandai Namco describes the game as a free-to-play battle royale for 24 players. You enter as a squad of three, select a character with distinct Quirks, search the map for items, fight other squads, and try to be the last team standing. The publisher lists versions for PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Availability, seasons, balance, and controls can change with updates; the European publisher site lists Season 19 news and patch material dated September 30, 2026.

That format creates two different goals. Your long-term goal is winning, but your immediate goal is making decisions that keep the squad supplied and together. A player who survives, shares information, and revives an ally can contribute more than a player who deals high damage and is eliminated in the opening minutes.

- Stay with your squad: three coordinated players can protect a looter, focus an enemy, and cover a retreat.
- Preserve both health resources: HP is your life total; GP absorbs incoming damage before HP when it is available.
- Take favorable fights: use cover, elevation, range, and your character’s movement instead of forcing every encounter.
- Keep an exit available: know where you will move if another squad arrives or your skills are on cooldown.
Controls: learn your platform’s current layout
The official beginner guide includes a controls illustration and documents a scheme in which L2 aims and R2 fires alpha projectiles. Treat that as an example from the guide, not a universal current mapping. PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Steam input configurations, accessibility settings, and later patches may use different labels or assignments.

Find the authoritative button map
- Open the game’s own controls display from the title screen or the pause/settings menus.
- Select the control or button-layout page for the device you are using. Read the labels shown for movement, camera, jump, crouch, attack, aim, Quirk skills, item use, markers, and revive actions.
- Test every action in Training Mode before entering a live match. Check whether a skill is a tap, hold, toggle, radial-menu selection, or stick direction.
- If you change a binding, repeat the test after returning to the default layout or switching characters. A setting that feels comfortable for one character may make another character’s skill sequence awkward.
Do not rely on a controller diagram copied from an older guide. The beta-era material remains useful for explaining systems, but it does not establish a complete current map for every platform or setting.
Three attack categories to understand
The publisher groups combat into alpha projectile attacks, melee attacks, and character-specific Quirk skills. Your first practice session should answer four questions for each attack: how far it reaches, how quickly it can be used again, how much time the animation leaves you exposed, and what movement or escape option follows it.
- Alpha projectiles: use them to pressure an opponent from range, check whether an enemy is exposed, or finish a target who is retreating. Learn the aim behavior and reload timing rather than holding the trigger whenever an enemy is visible.
- Melee attacks: they can punish an opponent at close range, but closing distance without cover can expose you to several enemies. Practice the range at which the attack connects and the movement that gets you out afterward.
- Quirk skills: each character has a different set of abilities. Test the effect, effective range, cooldown or reload behavior, vertical reach, and whether the skill can interrupt an enemy, create space, or help an ally.
Aim at a wall or training target, then repeat the same action while moving and jumping. You are learning the timing your hands must remember under pressure, not just reading a tooltip.
Roles and team bonuses
There are five role types. Each gives the squad a different bonus, and repeated roles amplify that role’s effect. The official guide does not describe one role as universally best, and it does not require a team to use five different roles. Think of role selection as choosing between broader utility and a stronger repeated benefit.
| Role | Team bonus | When the benefit matters |
|---|---|---|
| Strike | Increases team attack power. | Useful when your squad wants stronger damage during a planned engagement or a quick finish. |
| Assault | Increases team defense. | Useful when surviving incoming fire, holding a position, or buying time to revive matters. |
| Rapid | Increases team movement speed. | Useful for rotating, chasing a weakened squad, disengaging, and reaching a safe angle before opponents. |
| Technical | Increases team ability reload speed. | Useful when your plan depends on frequent Quirk use, repeated mobility, or more opportunities to control space. |
| Support | Improves the effects of recovery items for the team. | Useful for restoring HP or GP more efficiently and sustaining the squad between encounters. |
How to choose a role as a new player
Start with the character whose movement and skills you can understand, then look at the role bonus as a team decision. A mixed-role squad receives several kinds of help. A squad with two or more characters sharing a role gives up some breadth in exchange for a stronger repeated bonus. Neither approach is automatically correct: choose the arrangement that matches the characters your group can use reliably.
Before locking in, tell your teammates what your character can actually do. A Support character who never carries recovery items is not providing the value the role suggests, and a Rapid character whose player cannot control the movement may create less practical benefit than a familiar character in another role.

Your first-match routine
Use this sequence every match until it becomes automatic. It follows the publisher’s beginner advice while leaving room for character and platform differences.
- Land with the squad and inspect the area. Use the map’s zones to choose a starting point. A location with many loot opportunities may also attract several opponents. Choose a landing point and timing your entire squad can handle rather than splitting to chase the largest pile of items.
- Move before you become an easy target. Collecting items leaves you vulnerable. Have one player watch likely approaches while another searches, and avoid standing still in an exposed location when an enemy marker or sound suggests a squad is nearby.
- Restore Guard Points immediately. The official guide says players begin with few GP and should fill them early. While GP is available, incoming hits are applied to it before HP; without GP, hits reduce HP directly. Keep both bars visible and treat a depleted GP bar as a reason to seek cover and recover, not as permission to continue trading damage.
- Collect skill and recovery items. Skill cards level a specific Quirk skill. Level-up cards let you choose which skill to upgrade. Recovery drinks and kits restore HP or GP, and team kits can help nearby allies. Decide who needs an item most instead of allowing every player to take the first card or kit they see.
- Mark useful information. Use markers to point out enemies, items, and routes. A short marker can communicate faster than a long voice explanation, especially when your squad is fighting or moving through separate rooms.
- Choose a fight and an exit together. Before attacking, identify cover, height, environmental obstacles, and the direction your character can use to escape. If the first exchange goes badly, move away while you still have GP, mobility, and time to regroup.
Guard Points, HP, and recovery decisions
GP and HP are separate resources, so looking only at the HP bar gives an incomplete picture of your condition. The beginner guide specifically advises filling GP early because damage reaches HP directly when GP is absent. After an exchange, check which resource is missing, whether enemies can see you, and whether your squad can protect the recovery animation.
When to recover
- Recover behind cover or on the far side of terrain rather than in the open.
- Ask a teammate to watch the approach while you use a drink or kit.
- Do not wait until HP is nearly empty. A recovery action started late may be interrupted by the next attack.
- If an enemy squad knows your position, move first and recover after creating distance.
- When several teammates need items, prioritize the player who can safely hold an angle, revive, or provide the next escape.
Skill cards and leveling Quirks
Skill cards and level-up cards serve different purposes. A skill card improves the particular Quirk skill associated with that card. A level-up card lets you choose which skill to upgrade. Read the card before using it so you do not spend a targeted upgrade on a skill you rarely use.
A practical upgrade order
- Identify the skill that helps you survive a bad position: mobility, protection, space control, or another reliable escape.
- Upgrade the skill that your character uses most often to deal damage or protect an ally.
- Choose a targeted skill card when the associated Quirk is central to your plan; use a selectable level-up card when you need flexibility.
- Recheck the skill’s behavior after upgrading. A larger effect, longer reach, or different timing changes how close you can safely play.
There is no supported universal upgrade order because characters have different Quirks. The right question is which improvement makes your next decision safer or more effective, not which card is considered strongest in an old tier list.
Fighting, disengaging, and using the environment
Start fights on your terms
Look for an opponent who is isolated, recovering, or moving through an exposed route. Use height and cover to make your first exchange safer, and let your squad attack the same target when possible. A marker tells allies where to aim; it does not replace a shared plan, so indicate whether you are attacking, retreating, or only scouting.

An enemy who escapes around a corner may be leading you toward a second squad. Stop at a defensible position, check the area, and let your teammates catch up. Your character’s mobility is valuable for both pursuit and retreat; spending every movement skill to chase can leave you stranded when another enemy appears.

Disengage before the emergency
Retreat when GP is gone, key skills are unavailable, multiple enemies have an angle, or your squad has become separated. Use cover, elevation, and the environment to break sight lines, then regroup and recover. Escaping at half health preserves options; escaping only after HP is nearly gone often leaves no safe route.
Downed and eliminated teammates: how revives work
A player at zero HP enters a downed state and can be helped back up. A fully eliminated teammate requires a different process described in the official guide: collect that teammate’s dropped badge and three revive cards. Reviving takes time and exposes the rescuer, so the squad should create a safe window rather than attempting it in the middle of an active crossfire.
Safe rescue sequence
- Mark the downed or eliminated teammate and check whether enemies still have line of sight.
- Clear or discourage nearby opponents before beginning the rescue. One player can watch an approach while another collects the required badge and cards.
- Move the rescue to cover when possible. Do not run directly through an open area simply because the badge is visible.
- Coordinate the revive attempt so the squad knows who protects, who completes the action, and where everyone retreats if the enemy pushes.
- After the teammate returns, share recovery items and regroup before taking another fight. A revived player may still be vulnerable and under-supplied.
The official beginner lessons treat helping KO’d allies as a core skill. A rescue is successful only if the remaining squad survives the attempt, so patience is part of the mechanic.

The publisher’s beginner page includes lessons on skill cards, character-appropriate play, rescuing KO’d allies, Plus Ultra, and Training Mode. Plus Ultra is therefore worth learning as part of your chosen character’s kit rather than pressing it without a plan. Read the in-game description, test when it becomes available, and practice the timing in Training Mode so you know whether it is best used to secure an advantage, escape danger, or support a teammate.
The lesson topics are practical questions: how to level Quirks with skill cards, how to help a KO’d teammate, how Plus Ultra helps, and where to practice. Use those prompts to identify the next skill you need to learn instead of trying to master every system at once.
Training Mode: what to practice before live matches
Training Mode is the safest place to learn controls and Quirk behavior. A short, repeatable routine is more useful than wandering through every menu.

Choosing a beginner character without an unsupported tier list
No current easiest-character ranking is established here, and balance changes can make an old ranking misleading. Instead, compare candidates on four concrete axes:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Axis | Question to ask in Training Mode |
|---|---|
| Role | Does the team bonus support the squad’s plan: offense, defense, movement, reload speed, or recovery? |
| Skill range | Can you tell where the attack works and when you are too far away? |
| Mobility and escape | After attacking or being pressured, what action creates distance or reaches cover? |
| Clarity | Can you explain what each Quirk does and when to use it without relying on a memorized tier list? |
Pick one character, play enough matches to recognize their strengths and failure points, and only then branch out. Learning a new character every match makes it difficult to tell whether a defeat came from positioning, controls, item management, or unfamiliar skills.
Communication that helps a three-player squad
Communication should reduce uncertainty. Mark an enemy’s location, point out a recovery or skill card, and signal whether you are engaging or leaving. If you use voice chat, keep callouts short: location, target, condition, and action. For example, state that an enemy is above the team, that your GP is empty, and that you are moving behind cover.
- Before landing: agree on the zone and whether the squad will stay together while looting.
- During looting: announce useful cards, recovery items, and an approaching enemy.
- Before a fight: identify the target and the retreat direction.
- During a rescue: assign a protector and a rescuer, then call when the team should disengage.
- After a fight: report missing GP, HP, and key skills before moving toward another squad.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Splitting for loot
Symptom: one player is eliminated before the other two can help. Fix: choose a landing area the whole squad can reach and assign nearby search routes instead of racing to separate zones.
Ignoring GP
Symptom: HP disappears during an exchange even though the player felt protected. Fix: check GP after every fight and recover it before re-engaging.
Recommended Free Tools
Using every skill to attack
Symptom: the first burst misses and there is no movement option left. Fix: reserve at least one escape or space-making action whenever the enemy’s teammates are unaccounted for.
Best Value
Looting in the open
Symptom: a player is interrupted while collecting an item. Fix: use cover, have a teammate watch an approach, and move if a marker indicates danger.
Reviving immediately after elimination
Symptom: the rescuer is eliminated beside the badge or revive attempt. Fix: wait for a safe window, protect the interaction, and retreat if the enemy still controls the area.
Trusting an old control guide
Symptom: a familiar button performs a different action. Fix: open the in-game controls display for the current platform and verify the binding in Training Mode.
Patch awareness and what can change
The official European site lists Season 19 material dated September 30, 2026. Season content, character balance, item rules, and control behavior are patch-sensitive. The older open-beta guide is reliable for broad explanations such as the five role types and the three-card revive requirement, but it should not be treated as proof that every button, character strength, or season rule is unchanged.
When a patch changes a character or interface, reread the in-game descriptions, check the current controls screen, and spend a few minutes in Training Mode before judging your performance. Keep advice tied to the version and platform you are actually playing.
A simple improvement plan for your next five matches
- Match one: land with the squad, fill GP, and verify every control in a low-risk area.
- Match two: focus on item communication and use markers for enemies and recovery supplies.
- Match three: practice leaving fights early. Track whether you still have GP, an escape skill, and a route to cover when you disengage.
- Match four: use skill and level-up cards deliberately, choosing upgrades that improve survival or your most reliable Quirk.
- Match five: practice a coordinated rescue and review which role bonus your squad actually used. Keep the character if its skills are becoming clearer; change only one variable if you need to diagnose a problem.
This routine turns each match into a specific exercise. It also makes losses informative: you can identify whether the failure came from landing, resource management, communication, combat choice, or rescue timing.
