When an Ethernet connection fails, a basic RJ45 cable tester is often the fastest first check. These handheld continuity testers cost about $8–$15 in current listings, require no app or configuration, and reveal whether a cable’s conductors are connected in the correct order.
What this cheap tester actually does
A network cable tester has two pieces: a main unit and a detachable remote. Plug one end of an RJ45 cable into the tester and the other end into the remote, switch it on, and watch the numbered LEDs. The lights should appear in the expected sequence at both ends. A missing, duplicated, or out-of-order light points to a wiring problem.

UNITEK describes its OT140A as offering “one-touch operation with clear status display” and says it detects opens, shorts, miswires, and shielding. VCELINK similarly describes an easy-to-operate portable tester that uses LED signals. The simplest models have no menu, app, network connection, or calibration procedure: insert the plugs, turn the tester on, and read the sequence.
How to test an RJ45 cable
- Disconnect the cable. Remove it from switches, routers, computers, patch panels, and any other powered equipment.
- Separate the tester and remote. Keep the main unit at one end of the cable and carry the remote to the other end. The detachable remote is especially useful for long or installed runs.
- Insert both plugs fully. Push each RJ45 connector into its socket until the locking tab clicks. A partly inserted plug can look like a cable fault.
- Power on the tester. Depending on the model, use a slide switch or one-touch button. The LEDs will scan the conductors.
- Compare the sequence. A correctly terminated eight-wire cable shows pins 1 through 8 in the expected order on the main unit and remote. A dark LED indicates an open conductor; two pins lighting together can indicate a short; an unexpected order indicates crossed, reversed, split, or otherwise miswired pairs.
- Re-test after repair or replacement. If you re-crimp a connector, test the cable again from both ends before reconnecting it to network equipment.
Faults a continuity tester can find
- Open circuits: a broken conductor, failed crimp, or wire that never reaches the far end.
- Short circuits: conductors touching each other or a damaged plug causing an unintended connection.
- Wrong wire order: crossed, reversed, or split pairs caused by an incorrect termination.
- Bad plugs and terminations: contacts that do not bite into the cable conductors or are not seated correctly.
- Shielding problems: on models that include a shield indication, a missing or interrupted shield can be exposed.
Coverage varies. Some units also accept RJ11 or RJ12 telephone plugs, and selected models support BNC. The NOYAFA NF-468S listing adds RJ45/RJ11 plug checks and PoE identification, while Primus Cable lists continuity, miswiring, opens, shorts, and cross-pinning across RJ11/RJ12/RJ45/BNC variants.

What it cannot tell you
Passing a wire-map test does not prove that a cable can deliver a particular Ethernet speed. These inexpensive testers do not certify bandwidth, insertion loss, return loss, crosstalk, or maximum frequency. They also cannot diagnose DHCP or DNS failures, a dead switch port, bad routing, an internet outage, or an authentication problem. A PoE-aware model may indicate the presence or arrangement of power, but it is not a substitute for a cable certifier or a full network diagnostic tool.
Use the tester to answer a narrow question: are all conductors connected and terminated in the right order? If the answer is yes, continue troubleshooting the port, link lights, IP configuration, switch, and service.

How to choose the right model
For a loose patch cable
Choose an $8–$15 continuity tester with a clear LED sequence. RJ45-only support is sufficient if you never work on telephone or coaxial cabling.

Not only network cables, but also phone lines and BNC cables.
For installed or long cable runs
Prioritize a detachable remote, a stated maximum cable length that exceeds your run, readable LEDs, and a battery compartment you can access without tools. You may need a tone probe or locator if you must identify one cable among many; a continuity tester alone cannot label an unknown run.
For powered network equipment
Select a model that explicitly states PoE awareness if you need to check for power-related wiring issues. Treat that feature as an additional check, not as Ethernet certification.

For documented cabling performance
Use a professional qualifier or certifier when an installation must meet a category or performance standard. Those instruments measure electrical characteristics that a simple LED tester never measures.
Why an Ethernet cable may still fail after it passes
- The switch or router port is disabled or damaged.
- The network interface is negotiating the wrong speed or duplex mode.
- DHCP is unavailable, or the device has an incorrect static address.
- DNS, firewall, VLAN, authentication, or upstream internet service is failing.
- The cable passes continuity but exceeds its practical length, has severe interference, or cannot meet the required category and speed.
Start with the tester because it is fast and inexpensive, then move up the troubleshooting chain only when the wiring result is known.
