What is My Fuji and Happiness Code about?
University student Takuma moves in with his grandmother, Fumiko, after the death of his grandfather, Ishi. While searching Ishi’s study, Takuma finds a university admission guide that Ishi had left for Fumiko as a surprise. She decides to pursue the education she had wanted when she was younger, beginning a new student life as Takuma wrestles with uncertainty about his own future.

What does the “happiness code” mean?
The title’s “code” refers to the unusual equation in Ishi’s notebook. It is a plot mystery and a message left by a deceased family member—not an established real-world formula for happiness. The equation gives Takuma and Fumiko a reason to investigate Ishi’s thoughts and intentions as they navigate changes in their own lives.

Is the film based on a true story?
The film’s source concept is Ishiko Shimada’s autobiography, Shinyō wa depāto de utte inai: Oshiego to tomo ni ayunda josei no monogatari (信用はデパートで売っていない 教え子とともに歩んだ女性の物語). The official film site identifies Shimada’s autobiography as the source concept, while Bunkyo Gakuin describes the movie as an original film inspired by her outlook and centered on education. Is there a novelization?
Yukiko Manabe wrote a novelization of the film, announced by KADOKAWA for November 6, 2025, with 16 pages of opening color material. It is a book retelling the movie, distinct from Shimada’s autobiography, which is cited as the film’s source concept. The announcement does not establish whether either book is available in English.
