Elon Musk said on October 15, 2026, that SpaceX would reimburse users if Grok Bot makes a purchase mistake or leaks their card. That is a public promise, not yet a clearly defined refund policy: the posted Grok Bot terms still place broad responsibility for agentic actions on the customer and do not explain how Musk’s statement changes those obligations.
The issue arose after Musk described a shopping workflow in which a user photographs a credit card, uploads the image to Grok, and lets the bot find a deal and place an order. A report that Grok bought an airline ticket from a credit-card photograph prompted questions about who pays when an AI agent makes the wrong transaction.

What Musk promised
Think Facility records Musk’s October 15 post at 1:57 a.m. Eastern. He wrote: “This works well. If Grok @Bot makes a mistake with a purchase or leaks your card (never happened yet), SpaceX will make you whole.” UOL likewise reported that the reassurance followed a user account saying Grok had bought an airline ticket from a photograph of a credit card.

“Make you whole” suggests reimbursement, but Musk did not define the term. The post does not state a maximum payment, eligible countries or users, what counts as a mistake, whether consequential losses qualify, or how a customer should submit a claim. It also does not say whether SpaceX, rather than another company in the product’s corporate structure, would process or fund a payment.

How the proposed shopping workflow works
On October 10, Musk described the process this way: “To buy stuff, you can just take a picture of your credit card, drop it in the chat and Grok @Bot will scour the Internet for the best deal on the item you want and order it.”
That description indicates a highly capable agentic workflow: the user supplies payment-card information, Grok searches third-party websites, selects or presents a deal, and places an order. The available reports do not establish a complete rollout, supported countries, eligibility requirements, merchant coverage, whether every transaction requires confirmation, or how card images and payment credentials are stored. The airline-ticket account is an example of the kind of transaction being discussed, not evidence that the same workflow is available to every user.

What Grok Bot’s written terms say
The official Grok Bot Terms were marked “Last updated: October 12, 2026.” They define agentic actions broadly, including accessing websites, executing code, sending communications, processing data and interacting with third-party services.

The terms say: “Customer is solely responsible for charges, commitments, communications, and other consequences resulting from Agentic Actions authorized or initiated by Customer or its Users.” A separate liability provision is even broader: “CUSTOMER IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL AGENTIC ACTIONS TAKEN BY GROK BOT, WHETHER OR NOT SUCH ACTIONS WERE INTENDED, ANTICIPATED, OR AUTHORIZED BY CUSTOMER.” The provider disclaims losses except to the extent directly caused by gross negligence or willful misconduct.

The terms also warn that agentic actions may be “inaccurate, incomplete, delayed, unsuccessful, or unintended.” Approval and automated-review controls may fail to identify every harmful action and “do not reverse completed actions.” Users are told to conduct human review before financial transactions.

These texts are therefore in tension. The sources do not establish that Musk’s post amended the terms, created a separate enforceable guarantee, or would control if a dispute reached a court. Think Facility reported that the terms remained unchanged when reviewed on October 15 and did not predict which text a court would prioritize.

What losses remain unclear
Several scenarios are left unresolved:
- Wrong item or reservation: The promise could be read to cover an incorrect purchase, but it does not say whether cancellation fees, price differences or nonrefundable tickets are included.
- Unauthorized purchase: The terms assign responsibility even when an action was not intended, anticipated or authorized by the customer. Musk did not expressly say whether every unauthorized transaction qualifies.
- Leaked card information: The post refers to a card leak, but does not explain whether SpaceX would pay only fraudulent charges or also replacement costs, monitoring, interest, fees and other losses.
- Merchant or third-party fraud: It is unclear whether a problem caused by a merchant, travel site or payment processor would fall within the promise.
- Consequential losses: UOL noted uncertainty over losses such as a missed trip. The statement does not say whether indirect or consequential damages are covered.
What to do if Grok makes an unwanted purchase
- Stop further activity. Disable the relevant agent or remove its shopping permissions if those controls are available, and do not provide additional card details while investigating.
- Contact the card issuer immediately. Report an unauthorized or incorrect transaction, ask about a dispute or chargeback, and follow the issuer’s deadline for submitting evidence.
- Preserve records. Save the Grok conversation, approval prompts, receipts, merchant correspondence, timestamps and account alerts. Do not assume a completed agentic action can be reversed automatically.
- Request clarification from the service. Ask SpaceX or the applicable Grok support channel for the reimbursement process, required proof, covered losses, payment timetable and relationship to the posted terms.
- Limit exposure going forward. Use human review before every financial transaction, set the lowest available spending limits and permissions, and avoid uploading a card image unless you understand where it is processed and retained.
What users should take away
As of October 15, 2026, SpaceX has a public reimbursement assurance from Musk, while Grok Bot’s written terms still shift extensive responsibility to customers. The promise has no published definition, cap, claims process or stated rule overriding those terms. Until those details are documented, treat the statement as an assurance whose practical and legal scope is unsettled—not as a guaranteed refund program.
