Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) raised CNG prices by ₹1 per kg in Mumbai and adjoining areas from October 1, 2026, taking the reported rate from ₹88 to ₹89 per kg. The increase adds to fuel costs for CNG-powered autorickshaws, taxis and other vehicles; reports of the hike did not announce a related passenger-fare change.
What is the new CNG price in Mumbai?
The revised rate reported for Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is ₹89 per kg, effective October 1, 2026. That is ₹1 per kg above the ₹88 rate reported for September. The Indian Express and Hindustan Times reported the October revision; the September figure was reported by The Indian Express on September 1.
This is an MGL price change for Mumbai and adjoining or MMR areas, not a nationwide CNG price revision. The ₹89 figure is the rate reported for the October 1 change, rather than a guarantee of the price currently displayed at every station.
Why did MGL increase CNG prices?
MGL attributed the increase to higher input-gas costs, including domestic gas and imported regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG), whose cost it said is linked to international benchmarks. The company described the ₹1 increase as a partial offset to those costs and a way to sustain supply. mid-day quoted MGL’s statement that it was increasing prices “to partially offset the rising cost of input gas and ensure the continued and sustained supply of CNG to its customers.”

What does the increase mean for auto and taxi operators?
Anyone buying CNG in the affected area pays ₹1 more for each kilogram than at the reported September rate. The added daily or monthly expense depends on how much fuel a vehicle uses. The October coverage does not establish a typical driver’s consumption, so it does not support a single estimate of the added cost for an individual autorickshaw or taxi.
Did passenger fares also go up?
The October reports describe higher operating costs for CNG-dependent drivers but do not report a passenger-fare revision tied to this fuel-price increase. A fare change would require its own announcement from the relevant authority; the CNG hike alone is not a fare notice.

How current is the reported rate?
MGL’s homepage displayed ₹88 per kg in a search result captured several days before the October reports, while dated coverage published October 1 and 2 reported the increase to ₹89. Because the homepage result appeared not to reflect the revision, the dated reports are the basis for the effective October 1 rate. For a live price check, consult MGL’s website or confirm the rate at the station before refuelling.
