FICCI-EY reported INR 205 billion in film-segment revenue, more than 1,900 releases and 37 films earning at least INR 1 billion each at the box office. Those totals cover the wider film sector, not independent films alone. The more precise picture is a growing set of development and market opportunities alongside persistent uncertainty about financing, distribution and audience reach.
What the latest figures do—and do not—say
FICCI-EY’s 2025 report, released on 24 March 2026, puts film-segment revenue at INR 205 billion. It also counts more than 1,900 releases and 37 films that earned INR 1 billion or more at the box office. These are signs of a stronger year for the overall sector, not a measure of independent-film revenues, budgets, admissions or releases.
The comparison with 2024 helps explain the rebound. FICCI-EY’s 2024 report, released on 27 March 2025, recorded INR 187 billion in film-segment revenue, down 5% year over year, alongside declining theatrical admissions. Eleven Hindi films earned INR 1 billion that year, compared with 17 in 2023; digital and satellite rights values each fell 10%. The reports show an overall market recovering from a downturn, but they do not establish an indie-specific trend.
That distinction matters because “independent” is not a consistently measured box-office category. The BFI’s guide to Indian independent cinema notes that the term is difficult to define. A film can involve independent creative choices yet depend on a mix of public, private, domestic or international partners. Without a comparable definition and indie-only data, a sector-wide boom cannot be translated into a claim that independent films as a group are earning more or reaching larger audiences.

How independent projects find development and market access
India does have organized points where filmmakers can develop projects and meet potential partners. At the 2024 NFDC Film Bazaar, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting reported 205 applications to the Viewing Room, 21 applications to the feature-film Co-Production Market, and more than 2,000 attendees. The Screenwriters’ Lab received 154 entries, up from 140 the previous year, according to the ministry’s 2024–25 annual report.
Those counts indicate participation and institutional infrastructure; they are not figures for completed deals, financing secured or films released. For a filmmaker, Film Bazaar’s Viewing Room is a concrete route to seek festival selection, world sales, distribution partners or finishing funds. Its gap-financing and finishing-fund candidates should have most or all principal photography complete and should not yet have had a theatrical release. Program rules and dates can change, so applicants should check the current eligibility details directly.

A market or lab can create introductions and visibility, but attendance or selection alone does not guarantee a buyer, co-producer or release. The practical value depends on what a project needs, how ready it is, and whether the partners it meets can support that specific stage.
What an international success can—and cannot—show
Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light illustrates one possible route. The India-involving international co-production won the 2024 Cannes Grand Prix. BFI identified European development support including the Rotterdam Hubert Bals Fund and the Cannes Cinéfondation Residency; it later announced UK and Ireland theatrical distribution, followed by Blu-ray and BFI Player releases. The BFI release announcement documents a path connecting development support, festival recognition and distribution.

It is a useful example, not a template or proof that most independent Indian films can follow the same path. A film’s financing structure, collaborators, festival trajectory and rights deals all shape where it can be seen. One internationally acclaimed title cannot establish typical earnings, domestic access or the likelihood of a streaming acquisition for other films.
Why funding and distribution remain concerns
Participation in development programs does not solve the later question of getting a film to its audience. A 2024 Film Bazaar panel report records filmmakers calling for more state support and raising concerns about domestic distribution and streaming buyers. These are views voiced by industry participants, not quantified findings about every filmmaker or the whole market. The report also describes the Viewing Room as a connection point for projects seeking festival selection, world sales, distribution partners and finishing funds.

For any individual project, it is worth separating the financing question from the release question. A project may secure development help or international co-production support without thereby securing domestic theatrical bookings, a streaming deal or a wide audience. Each outcome depends on the project and the partners involved; the cited sources do not provide a single success rate for these routes.

The BFI’s retrospective guide says streaming platforms have augmented Indian independent cinema by offering an alternate revenue stream and reaching younger audiences. That makes streaming an important possible route, not evidence that every independent film is acquired or easy to find. Catalogue availability and buyer appetite vary, so viewers should check title by title rather than assume a particular service carries a film.

For filmmakers weighing routes, useful comparison points include how a project is financed, its production partners and languages, its festival strategy, domestic theatrical access, streaming acquisition and release, and any documented audience or revenue results. Keeping those details separate gives a clearer picture than treating all independent films—or all film-industry growth—as one story.
