What Mumbai’s AQI of 110 means
Hindustan Times reported on October 3, 2026, that Mumbai’s overall AQI had reached 110 on Friday, after standing at 79 on Thursday. The report attributes these category ranges to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB):

So 110 falls in the moderate band. It is a dated citywide reading reported by the newspaper—not a long-term average, a forecast, or a value that describes every neighborhood. The report also listed Worli at 180, Navy Nagar at 145, Deonar at 142 and Ghatkopar at 137. Those station readings show variation across the locations named; they do not establish the AQI at every point in the city. The report does not provide a direct CPCB dashboard record, timestamp, pollutant composition or averaging details. Hindustan Times, October 3, 2026.

Gufran Beig, chair professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies of the Indian Institute of Science, told Hindustan Times that Mumbai should pay attention to possible winter effects. He said a very strong El Niño “would slow down winds, thus reducing the dispersion of pollutants.” In that proposed mechanism, weaker winds could leave pollutants less dispersed, potentially worsening air quality.

This is an attributed forecast and explanation, not evidence that El Niño caused the reported AQI of 110 or proof that Mumbai’s winter AQI will rise by a particular amount. No cited source here provides a city-specific numerical projection of the effect.
Is “Super El Niño” an official category?
No. India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences said in a parliamentary answer on July 30, 2026, that neither the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) nor India Meteorological Department (IMD) has an officially defined “Super El Niño” category. It said the operational categories are weak, moderate, strong and very strong. “Super El Niño” is shorthand used outside that official classification; “very strong El Niño” is the official terminology to use for forecasts.

The ministry said conditions were weak in June 2026 and moderate in July, with further strengthening possible in October–December and a very strong category possible. What the 2026–27 El Niño outlook does—and does not—say
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center said on September 10, 2026, that El Niño was strengthening. It gave a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during Northern Hemisphere fall and winter 2026–27. It also assigned a 75% chance of a historic event in October–December 2026, defined in that discussion as a three-month RONI value of at least +2.5°C. NOAA noted that impacts consistent with El Niño become more likely at that magnitude, but are not guaranteed. WMO likewise notes that El Niño impacts vary with the event’s intensity, duration and season, and with interactions with other climate patterns such as the Indian Ocean Dipole. Even neutral ENSO conditions do not rule out extreme weather. WMO, June 2026.
Why the monsoon forecast is not a Mumbai AQI forecast
India’s May 29, 2026, monsoon forecast put June–September rainfall at 90% of the long-period average, with a model error of ±4%, and gave an 84% probability of below-normal or deficient rainfall. Those figures describe a national rainfall outlook. They do not predict Mumbai’s pollution level or establish how El Niño will affect the city’s winter air. Treat the October 3 news report as a dated account, not a real-time alert.
