MultiPar is a free Windows utility for creating, checking and repairing PAR recovery files for individual files or complete directory trees. The public project version is v1.3.3.6. Download the ZIP archive or Windows installer from Yutaka Sawada’s official GitHub releases page, verify the release hash, then create parity files before your data is damaged. MultiPar supports PAR 1.0 and PAR 2.0, Unicode filenames, folder trees and command-line operation. It can recover missing or corrupted data when enough parity information remains, but it is not a substitute for a separate backup.
What MultiPar does
MultiPar creates recovery data known as parity files. A PAR set contains information calculated from your original files; if some source data later disappears or becomes corrupted, a compatible PAR client can use the surviving parity blocks and the undamaged portions of the set to reconstruct the missing data.

The Parchive model is similar to RAID in one important respect: redundancy is added so damaged data can be rebuilt. The difference is that PAR protects a selected collection of files rather than an entire disk or filesystem. You choose which files or folders belong to a set, generate recovery files in advance, and keep those recovery files available if trouble occurs.

Where to download MultiPar safely
Use the author’s release page
Get MultiPar from Yutaka Sawada’s official GitHub releases page rather than from an executable mirror. Release entries identify the available ZIP archive or Windows installer, include change notes and publish cryptographic hashes for the packages. Packaging and version numbers can change, so the release page is the reliable place to select the current build.
Check the downloaded package
- Open the release entry that contains the version you intend to use and read its change notes.
- Choose either the portable ZIP archive or the Windows installer, depending on how you want to run the program.
- After downloading, calculate the package hash with a Windows hashing utility and compare it with the value shown in the same release entry. A mismatch means the file should not be installed; download it again from the release page.
- Keep the release archive until you have confirmed that MultiPar starts and can open the PAR files you need.
Do not assume that an old filename is the newest release. The installation guide uses MultiPar129.zip as an example, while later archives can use different names.
Install MultiPar on Windows
The project documents two installation routes. Both provide the same core PAR creation, verification and repair functions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Portable ZIP installation
- Create a dedicated folder for the program, such as a tools directory that you control.
- Extract the downloaded archive into that folder. The archive should produce the MultiPar program files, including
MultiPar.exe. - Run
MultiPar.exefrom the extracted folder. A portable installation does not require a traditional setup wizard, so you can move the folder or remove it when you no longer need the utility.
Windows installer
- Run the installer from the verified release package.
- Accept the installation location and complete the setup prompts.
- Start MultiPar from the installed program shortcut.
Associate PAR extensions
MultiPar can be associated with .par and .par2 files so that double-clicking a recovery file opens the program. If another PAR application already owns those extensions, remove or change its associations first; otherwise Windows may continue opening the files with the conflicting application. You can also leave the associations unchanged and open MultiPar manually when needed.

Protect a folder with MultiPar PAR files
Create the recovery set while every source file is still healthy. MultiPar can process directory trees, so you can protect a folder hierarchy without flattening it into one level. Preserve the relative paths and keep the resulting PAR files with a storage plan that is independent from the source data.
- Organize the source. Put the files you want to protect in the final folder structure. Check that files open normally and that no copy operation is still in progress.
- Open the create workflow. Launch MultiPar and choose its operation for creating PAR recovery data. Add the folder or the files that form the protection set. When a directory is selected, include the directory tree so subfolders are covered.
- Choose the PAR format. Select PAR 2.0 when you need the newer specification, or PAR 1.0 when compatibility with an older PAR workflow is required. MultiPar supports both formats.
- Define parity output. Set the destination for the generated PAR files and choose how much recovery data to create. More parity blocks provide more recovery capacity but consume more storage and take longer to generate. The useful amount depends on the damage you are planning for; there is no single percentage that guarantees recovery in every case.
- Generate the set. Start the creation process and wait for MultiPar to finish reading the source files and writing the PAR files. Do not modify the source folder during generation.
- Test the result. Use MultiPar’s verification operation on the completed set. A successful check confirms that the files and parity information currently agree; it does not prove that a future disk failure will be recoverable.
- Store copies separately. Put the PAR files on storage that is not exposed to the same accidental deletion, ransomware event, disk failure or physical loss as the originals. A parity file destroyed in the same incident as the source cannot help with recovery.
PAR files are recovery data, not encrypted archives and not a version-history system. If you need confidentiality, access control or historical snapshots, use those protections separately.
Verify files and repair damage
Verification before a failure
Run verification after creating a set and periodically when the files are stored for a long time. MultiPar compares the available source files with the information recorded in the PAR set. Verification can reveal a silent change or a damaged disk before you need the files urgently.
Repair after loss or corruption
- Place the damaged source files and the available PAR files in a working location. Keep filenames and directory paths intact where possible.
- Open the PAR or PAR2 file in MultiPar and choose the verify or repair operation.
- Let MultiPar scan the set. It will identify missing, incomplete or corrupted source data and report whether the available parity blocks are sufficient.
- If the scan indicates that recovery is possible, start the repair and wait until the reconstructed files are written.
- Run verification again after repair. Use the repaired files only after the second check reports that the set is consistent.
Recovery requires enough surviving parity information for the amount of damage. A set with insufficient parity, or one in which both source and recovery files were lost together, cannot reconstruct everything. The official Parchive material explains the parity model but does not publish a universal recovery-success percentage or a protection guarantee. Treat any claim of a fixed success rate as unsupported.

Unicode filenames and folder trees
MultiPar’s documented UTF-8 and UTF-16 handling is important when a protection set contains names outside the basic English alphabet. Japanese, accented, Cyrillic and other non-ASCII names can remain part of the set instead of being forced into a lossy legacy code page. Keep the original folder structure and avoid renaming files between creation and repair; a changed path can make it harder to match a damaged item with its recovery data.
Directory-tree support also makes MultiPar suitable for project folders, photo libraries and exported archives that contain many nested subfolders. Select the top-level folder when creating the set, and retain the generated PAR files in a location where they can be found even if the original tree is unavailable.
Command-line, batch and performance options
Automation
The project documentation and release notes describe command-line and batch-oriented operation. This allows a scheduled script or a repeatable maintenance task to create or verify sets without relying on every operation being performed through the graphical interface. Because switches and syntax can vary by release, use the command-line help and documentation bundled with the version you installed rather than copying a command intended for another build. Record the exact command, source path and PAR destination in your backup notes so the job can be reproduced.

GPU acceleration
On 64-bit Windows, the README identifies par2j64.exe as an option for GPU acceleration. It is a performance choice, not a requirement: standard MultiPar operation remains available without a compatible GPU. Test the accelerated executable on a representative folder before making it part of an unattended job, and verify the resulting PAR files afterward.

FLAC fingerprints
FLAC fingerprint support is available when flac.exe and libFLAC.dll are supplied. This is an optional feature for workflows that need fingerprint information for FLAC audio. It does not replace PAR parity and does not increase the recovery capacity of a set by itself.
Compatibility and limits
Windows requirement
The official introduction lists Windows Vista or later as the system requirement. MultiPar is a Windows utility; macOS and Linux users should choose another PAR2 client or run a compatible Windows environment. Do not assume that a Windows executable will provide native integration with non-Windows file managers.
PAR compatibility
MultiPar reads and creates both PAR 1.0 and PAR 2.0 data. When exchanging recovery files with someone using another client, confirm which specification that client supports. PAR2-capable software generally cannot be assumed to handle every PAR1-specific workflow identically, so format choice should follow the systems that must open the set.

A PAR set only helps when it was generated before the damage and when enough parity blocks survive. It does not protect against theft, fire, deletion of both copies, malware that encrypts every reachable drive, or a mistaken source selection. Keep at least one independent backup and, for important data, an additional copy in another physical location or service.

Troubleshooting common problems
Windows opens PAR files in the wrong program
Remove the competing .par or .par2 association, then assign the extension to MultiPar during installation or through Windows file-association settings. You can also launch MultiPar directly and open the recovery file without changing associations.
The repair scan says there is not enough information
Locate additional PAR files from the same set and make sure they are not truncated. Confirm that the source files and recovery files belong to the same creation run; similarly named sets from different folders cannot be combined safely. If the total surviving parity is still below the amount of missing or damaged data, repair is not possible with that set.
Non-ASCII names appear incorrect
Use the current MultiPar build and preserve the original paths. Avoid extracting or copying the set through software that converts filenames to a legacy code page. MultiPar documents UTF-8 and UTF-16 support, but another tool in the transfer chain can still alter names before MultiPar sees them.
The downloaded archive will not run
Re-download the package from the official release page, compare its cryptographic hash with the published release value, and extract it again. A hash mismatch, incomplete download or extraction error should be resolved before troubleshooting Windows permissions or compatibility.
Choosing MultiPar for your workflow
MultiPar is a strong fit when you need a free Windows tool that can protect nested folders, preserve Unicode names, create either PAR1 or PAR2 data and run verification or repair manually or through scripts. Before standardizing on it, check the factors that matter to your environment:
- Whether every computer that must open the set runs Windows Vista or later.
- Whether the receiving client supports the PAR specification you select.
- Whether your process needs directory-tree handling rather than a flat file list.
- Whether Unicode filenames must survive creation, transfer and repair.
- Whether command-line or batch execution is required.
- Whether the optional 64-bit GPU executable is useful for your workload.
- Whether the project’s current release and package hashes meet your software-maintenance policy.
For a small set, the portable ZIP is convenient: extract it, run MultiPar.exe and keep the folder with your utilities. For managed desktops, the installer and explicit file associations may be easier to deploy. In either case, create and verify PAR files before the first incident, store them separately from the protected data and periodically test that the set can still be read.
Bottom line
Download MultiPar from Yutaka Sawada’s official GitHub releases page, verify the package hash, and use the portable archive or Windows installer that suits your setup. Its PAR1/PAR2 support, directory-tree coverage, Unicode filename handling and repair workflow make it practical for protecting folders on Windows Vista and later. The protection works only when parity is created in advance and stored independently, so pair MultiPar with a real backup strategy rather than treating recovery files as your only copy.
