Magic: The Gathering is planning rare God Packs for its two main booster products, but they will not appear in every pack. The changes are scheduled to begin with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, which Wizards of the Coast calls the first Magic set of 2027. The announcement also renames Play Boosters, changes foil contents, and raises the stated rate of foil rares and mythics in the renamed Booster Packs.
What is changing, and when?
Wizards announced the changes on October 5, 2026. They are prospective: the rollout is scheduled to start with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm and continue with Magic Multiverse sets. Wizards says Universes Beyond sets are expected to receive God Packs in 2028; it has not provided a more detailed schedule for individual sets. Wizards’ announcement says the changes will not come with a price adjustment, but that statement does not establish regional retail prices or the future price of a particular product.

What are the God Pack odds and contents?
Wizards announced separate rates and contents for Booster Packs and Collector Boosters. These are publisher-stated rates, not independently measured opening results or a guarantee over any quantity of packs.
| Product | Announced frequency | God Pack contents |
|---|---|---|
| Booster Pack (formerly Play Booster) | One in every 1,000 packs, according to Wizards | 14 rare and/or mythic rare cards: 10 non-foil regular-frame cards, two non-foil Booster Fun cards, and two traditional foil Booster Fun cards; plus one celebration card. |
| Collector Booster | One in every 300 packs, according to Wizards | One foil land; three foil default-frame rares and/or mythics; three non-foil Booster Fun rares and/or mythics; five foil Booster Fun rares and/or mythics; plus one celebration card. |
The celebration card is additional to the listed rare and/or mythic cards. A God Pack is a random configuration that may appear in stocked packs, not a separate item that customers can order or a promised result of buying a pack or box. Wizards’ announcement and its retailer guidance describe the announced rates and contents.

What changes in regular Booster Packs?
Play Booster becomes Booster Pack
Wizards describes this as a name change: “Play Boosters are now just called Booster Packs.” It is not an announcement of a new product. The renamed Booster Pack will also have a revised wildcard slot: Japan Showcase cards are planned to appear there in traditional foil.
Foil contents change
Booster Packs will no longer include foil commons or uncommons, and a foil will no longer be guaranteed in every pack. Wizards says the foil cards in these packs will be rare or mythic rare, and that foil rare and mythic drop rates will increase. The announcement does not provide a numerical rate for that increase.
Rank #2
- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
What changes in Collector Boosters?
Collector Boosters will remove two foil commons and one foil uncommon, without replacing those three cards. This does not mean foil commons and uncommons disappear from the product entirely: WPN says some remain in Collector Boosters. Their God Pack configuration is separate from the Booster Pack configuration, with its own announced one-in-300 rate and contents.

- Competitive-feeling events: WPN strongly recommends removing the God Pack from play while letting the opener keep it, then giving the player an unopened Booster Pack from the same set at no charge so they can continue.
- Casual events: Stores have discretion to leave the God Pack in the draft or sealed pool. WPN recommends removal and replacement in most cases.
- Competitive events supplied by Wizards: WPN says the God Pack must be removed and replaced, including at events such as Regional Championships and the Pro Tour.
These procedures come from the WPN retailer guidance; follow the judge or organizer’s direction at the event.
