The safe fix for an msys-zstd-1.dll error is to repair the MSYS2 installation that owns the file, not to download a random DLL. The file belongs to MSYS2’s libzstd package and normally resides at /usr/bin/msys-zstd-1.dll. Open the MSYS2 environment used by the failing program, update that environment, run pacman -S libzstd, verify the file, and correct PATH if Windows still cannot locate it.
What the msys-zstd-1.dll error means
Messages such as “msys-zstd-1.dll is missing,” “msys-zstd-1.dll was not found,” or “The code execution cannot proceed because msys-zstd-1.dll was not found” indicate that a Windows program tried to load a runtime library supplied by MSYS2 and the loader could not complete that request. The file is not a general Windows component. It is installed by the MSYS2 libzstd package, which provides the Zstandard compression library used by software built for an MSYS2 environment.

In a normal MSYS2 installation, the package places the file at /usr/bin/msys-zstd-1.dll. The leading slash is interpreted relative to the MSYS2 installation directory; for example, an installation at C:msys64 has a corresponding Windows path under that root. The package lists gcc-libs as a dependency, so installing through MSYS2’s package manager also lets the package manager handle required supporting files.

- The package is absent: a partial installation, an interrupted update, or a newly installed toolchain never installed
libzstd. - The package is damaged: the package database says it is installed, but the DLL was deleted, quarantined, or corrupted.
- The wrong MSYS2 environment is being used: MSYS, MINGW64, and UCRT64 shells have different paths and runtime expectations. A program started from one environment can fail when launched from another.
- PATH does not expose the required directory: the DLL exists, but Windows cannot find it when the executable is launched outside the matching MSYS2 terminal.
These causes are different from a missing Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Installing unrelated Windows runtime redistributables will not restore an MSYS2-owned file.

Is msys-zstd-1.dll safe?
A copy installed by MSYS2’s signed package repositories and managed by pacman is the appropriate source for this DLL. A standalone DLL-download site is not an equivalent repair: it can provide a mismatched build, omit dependencies, bypass package updates, and make later troubleshooting harder. Copying a DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 is particularly risky because it changes a system-wide search location and can create version conflicts while leaving the owning MSYS2 package broken.
Do not disable security software merely to force a DLL into place. If security software removed the file, review its quarantine record and restore it only after confirming that the MSYS2 installation and package source are legitimate. Then reinstall the package so the package database and files agree.
Before you repair it: identify the correct MSYS2 environment
MSYS2 can expose several terminals, and the correct one depends on how the failing application was built. Check the shortcut or terminal title that normally launches the program. Common choices are:

- MINGW64: the 64-bit MinGW environment used by many native Windows toolchains.
- UCRT64: a 64-bit environment using the Universal C Runtime.
Use the same environment that the application expects. Do not mix files from a separate Git installation, another MinGW distribution, or a different MSYS2 root. Two installations can both contain a file with a similar name while requiring different supporting libraries.
For a documented GCC troubleshooting case, MSYS2 project member Biswa96 advised: “Make sure you are using MINGW64 environment (the blue icon). The prompt text will have MINGW64 string.” The practical check is the prompt itself: it should identify the environment you intend to repair rather than merely showing a generic Windows command prompt.
Repair msys-zstd-1.dll with pacman
These steps preserve the package-managed layout and are the preferred repair for a single missing or damaged file. Run every command in the matching MSYS2 terminal, not in PowerShell or an unrelated Git shell.

1. Open the matching terminal
- Close the program that displays the error.
- Open the MSYS2 shortcut associated with the program: MSYS, MINGW64, or UCRT64.
- Confirm the prompt or window title identifies that environment. If the application documentation specifies an environment, follow that requirement instead of choosing by guesswork.
2. Refresh package metadata and update MSYS2
MSYS2 updates its binary packages through pacman. Start with the normal update workflow so the package database and installed libraries are on a consistent release level:
pacman -SyuFollow the terminal’s instructions. Core updates can require the terminal to close and reopen before the update can continue; if prompted, restart the same MSYS2 shortcut and run the update command again until it completes normally. Updating first matters because an old package database can select versions that do not match the rest of the environment.
3. Install or restore the owning package
Install the package that owns the missing file:
pacman -S libzstdAccept the package manager’s confirmation when it shows the transaction. pacman resolves declared dependencies, including gcc-libs, rather than requiring you to copy supporting DLLs manually. If the package is already installed, pacman may report that there is nothing to do; proceed to the verification and reinstall branches below if the file is still absent.
4. Verify the file in the MSYS2 root
After the transaction finishes, check the installation’s usr/bin directory. From the MSYS2 shell, you can use:
ls -l /usr/bin/msys-zstd-1.dllA successful result shows the file path and its size and permissions. In Windows Explorer, browse to the usrbin directory inside the same MSYS2 root. Do not check a different MSYS2 installation by accident; if you have more than one root, compare the terminal’s environment and installation path before deciding that the file is missing.

MSYS2 documents two useful ownership queries:
pacman -F msys-zstd-1.dll
pacman -Fx msys-zstd-1.dllThe first searches the synchronized package-file database, while -Fx performs an extended filename search. These commands are useful when a program names a DLL but you are unsure which MSYS2 package supplies it. For this particular file, the owning package is libzstd.

6. Reinstall the package if the file is still missing or corrupted
If the package database says libzstd is installed but /usr/bin/msys-zstd-1.dll is absent, reinstall the package from the matching terminal:
pacman -S libzstdWhen pacman offers a reinstall or replacement, approve it. This replaces files from the repository version and restores the package-managed record. If a security product repeatedly removes the DLL, resolve that quarantine event before retrying; otherwise the file may disappear again immediately after installation.
7. Restart the terminal and the application
Close the MSYS2 terminal and reopen it after package changes. Then start the affected application again. A process that was already running can retain its old environment and will not necessarily see a newly installed file or a changed PATH.
Fix PATH when the DLL exists but Windows still cannot find it
If the file is present and the error continues, the remaining issue is often environment selection or PATH. Windows searches the executable’s directory and the directories listed in PATH when resolving dependent DLLs. A maintainer explanation for an MSYS2 GCC case notes that /mingw64/bin must be on PATH when dependent executables are located in another directory.
Launch the program from the intended MSYS2 shell
The least error-prone test is to start the program from the same MSYS2 terminal in which its toolchain was installed. This supplies the environment’s expected PATH without changing global Windows settings. If the program works there but fails from a desktop shortcut, a build script, or a separate command prompt, the launcher’s environment is incomplete or points to a different MSYS2 root.
Check the active PATH
In the matching shell, display PATH and look for the directory required by the application’s environment. For a MINGW64 application, the relevant directory is commonly represented in the shell as /mingw64/bin. A Windows-style launcher may need the equivalent path under the actual MSYS2 installation root. The exact root and environment must match the program; adding a directory from another installation can replace one DLL problem with several version conflicts.

echo $PATHCompare the result with the program’s documented launch instructions. Avoid adding every MSYS2 directory to the global Windows PATH. A broad, mixed PATH can cause Windows to load an MSYS runtime where a native MinGW runtime was expected, or vice versa.
Correct a desktop shortcut or script
- Prefer the application’s supplied MSYS2 shortcut or launcher.
- If you maintain a script, invoke the correct MSYS2 shell explicitly and let that shell set its environment.
- If you must edit a Windows PATH, add only the matching environment’s bin directory and place it ahead of conflicting toolchain directories.
- Restart the shortcut, script host, terminal, or IDE after changing PATH; existing processes retain the old value.
PATH changes do not replace the package repair. The DLL should still be present under the MSYS2 root, and the package should remain managed by pacman.
When a complete MSYS2 reinstall is the better fix
Reinstall MSYS2 when the environment has multiple missing files, inconsistent package errors, a broken package database, or a failed upgrade that cannot be completed. A full reinstall is more disruptive than reinstalling one package, but it can restore a damaged environment in one controlled operation.
Prepare before removing or replacing the installation
- Record which environments you use (MSYS, MINGW64, or UCRT64).
- Back up project files, shell startup files, package lists, custom scripts, and toolchain configuration that you need to preserve.
- Close all MSYS2 terminals, compilers, editors, and build processes.
- Note the current installation directory so scripts and IDE settings can be updated after reinstalling.
Install from the official MSYS2 installer
Use the official MSYS2 installer rather than an archive from an unknown mirror. The installer establishes the initial environment; ongoing package updates are performed with pacman. The installer documentation recommends a short ASCII-only NTFS path such as C:msys64. Spaces, non-ASCII characters, network drives, and very long paths can cause tool failures, so avoid them when choosing a new location.
After installation, open the required terminal, complete the initial update workflow, and then install the packages your project needs, including libzstd when the application depends on msys-zstd-1.dll. Restore only the configuration you understand; copying an old, damaged package database or entire usr tree into a new installation can reproduce the original problem.

A standalone DLL download is not an equivalent option because it bypasses MSYS2 package ownership, dependency resolution, and updates. It also gives you no reliable way to verify that the binary matches the shell environment that loads it.
Windows versions supported by current MSYS2 policy
Current MSYS2 policy lists the graphical installer as requiring 64-bit Windows 10 version 1809 or newer. MSYS/Cygwin and MinGW packages require 64-bit Windows 10 or newer. Windows 11 falls within that supported range. Older Windows releases may require archived installers and have reduced support, so a failure on an older host should not be diagnosed as though it were a current Windows 10 or 11 installation.

Check the system type before reinstalling. A 32-bit host does not meet the current 64-bit requirements listed for the installer and package environments.
Troubleshooting branches for stubborn errors
“Target not found” or an unavailable package
Run the update workflow first in the intended terminal, then retry pacman -S libzstd. An unsynchronized package database or an unsupported, obsolete installation can prevent pacman from resolving a package. If the environment is old enough that current repositories no longer support it, use the supported reinstall path rather than substituting a DLL from another source.

Confirm that the application is loading the same MSYS2 root you inspected. Check the shell used to launch it, the shortcut’s PATH, and any IDE-specific environment settings. A desktop application launched without MSYS2’s environment may not search the directory that a terminal session supplies.
The program starts, then reports another missing DLL
That pattern points to an incomplete or mixed runtime rather than a single missing file. Complete the update, reinstall the owning package and its dependencies through pacman, and remove conflicting toolchain paths from the launcher. If several related files are missing, back up your projects and perform a clean MSYS2 reinstall.
The error began after copying a project or executable
MSYS2-built programs can depend on the environment from which they were built. Moving only the executable to another PC or to a directory with a different launcher PATH can leave its runtime DLLs behind. Rebuild or run it within the intended MSYS2 environment, and deploy the required runtime files according to that application’s build and distribution instructions rather than copying random DLLs into a system directory.
A package update was interrupted
Reopen the same MSYS2 terminal and repeat the normal update command. Do not delete individual DLLs or manually replace files while pacman is repairing the transaction. If the update cannot be completed and package operations remain inconsistent, a fresh installation is safer than repeatedly mixing files from different releases.
