In T3’s review, an RTX 5090 configuration delivered strong Cyberpunk 2077 results, but the tested machine weighed 2.6kg, had a 1TB SSD and drew criticism for its size, price and some chassis flex. Its display and components vary by region and SKU, so those findings apply to the reviewed unit—not every Raider 16 Max HX.
What configuration did T3 review?
T3 Staff Writer Max Freeman-Mills tested a Raider 16 Max HX with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, 32GB of DDR5 memory in a 2×16GB arrangement, a 1TB SSD and a 16-inch 2560×1600 WQXGA IPS display with a 240Hz refresh rate. T3 reported a weight of 2.6kg and a large footprint for a 16-inch laptop. T3’s review is evidence about that particular configuration.

Other reviews and official specifications describe different versions. For example, TechRadar tested an RTX 5090 model with a Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and a 2TB SSD. MSI’s 2026 announcement lists family options including RTX 5090 24GB GDDR7 and RTX 5080 16GB; it also gives a memory ceiling of up to 128GB DDR5. These are family specifications, not a description of T3’s unit. MSI’s announcement ties a maximum combined CPU/GPU power of 300W specifically to a Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and RTX 5090 configuration running Apex Performance mode on AC power—not to T3’s tested model.

How fast is it for gaming?
T3’s Cyberpunk 2077 tests show what its RTX 5090 review unit could do under the specified settings. At native resolution with Ray-Tracing Low, T3 recorded an average of 120.9fps. With Ray-Tracing Overdrive, its reported average was 60.87fps; enabling 4x frame generation raised the reported figure to 189.67fps. The latter is a frame-generated result, not the same thing as rendering that many frames natively. All three numbers are T3’s results for its configuration and test methodology, not a promise for every game or Raider SKU.

- Advanced Thermal Architecture: Designed to support up to 300W of total system power, the robust thermal dynamic cooling system maintains optimal operating temperatures and peak performance during extended gaming sessions.
TechRadar’s results provide a separate data point, not a direct head-to-head test: on its different RTX 5090 configuration, it reported 60fps in Cyberpunk 2077’s Ray Tracing Overdrive preset at native 1600p using Balanced DLSS upscaling without frame generation. Different hardware, settings and methods mean the figures should not be treated as directly comparable.
Can you use it away from a desk?
At 2.6kg, with a large chassis for its screen size, the T3 unit is a desktop-replacement-style laptop rather than a lightweight travel machine. TechRadar also described its reviewed model as bulky and a poor fit for buyers who want a laptop that is easy to take on the go. The laptop’s weight is only part of the travel burden: the power adapter adds to what you must carry, although the reviewed sources do not provide a comparable adapter weight.

T3 reported that its unit reached 31fps unplugged in its Ray-Tracing Low test, while warning that battery life would not last long. That indicates gaming away from the adapter is possible in a pinch; it does not establish how long the laptop can sustain demanding play. TechRadar’s separate movie battery test lasted 8 hours 11 minutes on its Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus, 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD configuration. That is a result for a different configuration and a movie test, not a gaming-runtime estimate.

Which screen and storage should you expect?
Display
T3’s test unit had a 2560×1600 IPS panel running at 240Hz. OLED is an option in some territories and from some retailers, sometimes at additional cost; MSI’s family specifications list a 16-inch QHD+ OLED 240Hz option for selected versions. Do not assume the T3 review’s IPS findings describe an OLED model. Check the exact regional SKU and retailer listing for panel type, resolution and refresh rate before buying.

Storage
T3 considered the 1TB SSD in its reviewed unit underwhelming at this price. MSI specifies two M.2 slots for the family—one PCIe Gen5 x4 and one PCIe Gen4 x4—so a second SSD may be an expansion path, but confirm the exact SKU’s compatibility and MSI’s service or warranty guidance before opening the laptop or buying a drive.
How are the keyboard, chassis and cooling?
T3 described a plastic-heavy chassis with some flex, but said it found no deeper solidity issue in regular use. TechRadar was more critical, noting keyboard-housing flex and criticizing the touchpad. These are reviewers’ different hands-on observations, not proof that every unit has the same defect or feel. If possible, try the keyboard and touchpad in person, especially if you expect to use them for long sessions without external peripherals.

Thermal and noise impressions also differ. T3 said the fans were not as loud as feared and wrote, “The laptop never got uncomfortably hot in my testing.” That is Freeman-Mills’s bounded observation of his review unit, not a guarantee across workloads or environments. TechRadar reported noticeable fan noise under intensive workloads. Neither account supplies standardized noise measurements that would settle how loud the laptop will seem in your room.
How much does it cost, and is it worth buying?
T3 listed a starting price of £2,249 / $2,999 and reviewed a unit pairing the RTX 5090 with the Core Ultra 9 275HX. At its publication time, TechRadar listed its different RTX 5090 / Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus configuration at $4,299 / £3,999. These are dated review prices, not verified current street prices; retailer, region and configuration affect what you pay.

The Raider 16 Max HX makes most sense if you want a powerful 16-inch gaming machine for predominantly stationary use and have checked that the exact configuration justifies its price. Its performance case is supported by T3’s results, while the size, 1TB storage in the tested unit, subjective build concerns and configuration-dependent display options all matter to value. Before ordering, compare the local price and exact CPU, GPU, memory, SSD and screen specification—not just the family name or headline RTX 5090 label.
