The MSI Katana 15 HX B14W can compete with some Acer Predator and Alienware gaming laptops on performance and price, but it is not a universal winner or automatically one of 2026’s best budget buys. Its value depends on the exact configuration and what it costs in your market. A Tom’s Guide review found strong results from an RTX 5060 model, alongside a relatively dim display and modest battery life.
What the MSI Katana 15 HX B14W comparison actually shows
“B14W” identifies a family, not one fixed specification. The strongest evidence for its performance comes from Tom’s Guide’s review of a specific configuration: a Core i7-14650HX, Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060, 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD. Results from that review unit should not be assumed for every B14W sold in every region.

Tom’s Guide’s comparison included the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI and Alienware 16X Aurora. Separately, GamesRadar found the RTX 5060 Katana kept pace with some more expensive RTX 5060 laptops in synthetic 3DMark tests, but fell behind the Lenovo Legion 7 and Alienware 16X Aurora at more demanding settings. The evidence supports “gives them a run for their money” as a qualified comparison—not a claim that the Katana beats Acer or Alienware across the board.
For manufacturer-listed configuration details, see MSI’s US Katana 15 HX B14W specifications. The specifications available in that market should not be treated as a guarantee that every listed option is sold in other regions.

Which B14W configuration are you comparing?
MSI’s US specification page lists two distinct display classes: a 15.6-inch Full HD (1920 × 1080) 144Hz panel described as 45% NTSC, and QHD (2560 × 1440) 165Hz options described as anti-glare with typical 100% DCI-P3 coverage. The resolution, refresh rate and color specification can therefore differ substantially within the B14W family.
Tom’s Guide lists an entry configuration with a Core i7-14650HX, RTX 5050, 16GB of memory, 512GB of storage and a 15.6-inch QHD 165Hz display; its listed top configuration has a Core i9-14900HX, RTX 5070, 32GB and 1TB. Its tested RTX 5060 unit is a separate configuration. Check the seller’s full model number and listing rather than assuming the reviewed unit, the entry model and the most expensive model share the same components or screen.
How fast is the reviewed RTX 5060 model in games?
In Tom’s Guide’s 1440p game tests, its Core i7-14650HX/RTX 5060 review unit recorded:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Counter-Strike 2: 159fps
- Forza Horizon 5: 54fps
- F1 25: 30fps
These are results from that publication’s review unit and test settings, not promised frame rates for every game or B14W configuration. Resolution, graphics presets and the particular GPU matter when comparing laptops: a result is useful only when the other machine was tested at comparable settings.

Tom’s Guide also reported Geekbench 7 scores of 2,490 single-core and 16,584 multi-core for the unit, a 3:24 Handbrake 4K-to-1080p encode, and SSD speeds of 3,490 MB/s write and 3,902 MB/s read. Those figures describe that review sample’s tests; they do not establish how every retail SKU will perform.
What are the trade-offs in the display and battery?
Tom’s Guide measured a peak brightness of 262.2 nits on its review unit. In the same publication’s comparison, the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI measured 520.8 nits, the Alienware 16X Aurora 450.8 nits, and the Alienware 16 Area-51 368 nits. These are review-specific measurements, not a universal ranking of all versions of those product lines. The Katana may be less comfortable to use in a bright room, even if its resolution and refresh rate look attractive on paper.
The picture is more favorable for measured color than for brightness: Tom’s Guide reported 151.3% sRGB coverage, 107.1% DCI-P3 coverage and Delta-E 0.07 for its unit. Those figures follow the review’s measurement conventions and should not be read as proof that every B14W panel is identical; MSI lists different panel variants within the family.
In Tom’s Guide’s light-use battery test, conducted with the screen at 150 nits, the Katana lasted 5 hours and 9 minutes. The same comparison recorded 4 hours and 11 minutes for the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI and 3 hours and 1 minute for the Alienware 16X Aurora. These are results under that review’s test conditions, not a guarantee of runtime during gaming or everyday use on another configuration.

Does the price make it a budget buy?
There is no single price that settles the question: review prices differ by market, date and configuration, and they are not verified live offers.
| Source and date | Reported price | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Tom’s Guide, September 20, 2026 | $1,284 / £1,299 starting; $1,999 / £1,799 for its higher configuration | Its reported US and UK entry and higher-configuration prices; not verified current prices or necessarily the same SKU in both regions. |
| Tom’s Guide comparison, September 20, 2026 | Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI: $1,699; Alienware 16X Aurora: $2,499 | Prices listed in that review’s comparison, not verified current offers. |
| PC Gamer, September 30, 2026 | £1,300 in the UK; $1,799 in the US | Price for PC Gamer’s reviewed configuration. The publication judged the US value poor against similarly specced alternatives and the UK proposition stronger. |
| GamesRadar+ review | Just over $1,000 | Cheaper RTX 5050 configurations described as available around the time of that review; not a current offer. |
The differences between those review prices are a reason to compare the actual listing, not combine them into one price for one standard configuration. Tom’s Guide’s entry price and PC Gamer’s tested-model price refer to different review contexts. Check that the listed GPU, panel, memory and storage are the ones you intend to buy, then compare the local price with similarly configured alternatives.
In Tom’s Guide’s verdict, reviewer Nikita Achanta wrote: “If you want a powerful gaming laptop but you’re on a budget, the MSI Katana 15 HX B14W is worth considering.” PC Gamer’s more negative assessment of its US reviewed-model price underlines why that recommendation is conditional rather than a blanket bargain claim.

It may suit you if
- You prioritize gaming performance and want a high-refresh QHD option in the configuration you are considering.
- The exact model is competitively priced against laptops with comparable GPUs and screens in your local market.
- You accept the measured brightness and battery results as trade-offs for the performance and price.
Compare alternatives closely if
- You often use a laptop in a bright room, need longer use away from an outlet or want an OLED screen.
- You are comparing against an Acer or Alienware model without matching the GPU, screen resolution, graphics settings and price.
Before checkout, verify the full SKU, GPU, panel resolution and refresh rate, memory and storage bundle, seller, local price, return terms and warranty.
