They can run Windows PC launchers and, through MSI App Player, Android mobile games, but each title still depends on its launcher, controller support, anti-cheat system and performance requirements. Battery capacity and card-reader standards also vary sharply by model: the original Claw A1M has a 53 Wh battery, the Claw A8 has an 80 Wh battery, and newer models use different microSD standards.
Which MSI Claw model do you have?
“MSI Claw” covers several handheld PCs. Check the exact model name in Windows or on the device label before using a battery figure, buying a memory card or comparing expected performance. The most important differences documented by MSI are below.

The table separates stated specifications from unknowns. A larger battery can help, but it does not by itself predict how long a game will run. Processor generation, screen brightness, frame-rate targets, power mode and the game’s workload all matter.

Can the MSI Claw play all Steam games?
No. The Claw can install and launch many Windows PC games, including games distributed through Steam, but neither MSI’s software guide nor the available independent review certifies every title. A game may fail to install, refuse controller input, require a launcher that behaves poorly on a small touch screen, block handheld play through anti-cheat, or run at an impractical frame rate.

What MSI officially supports
MSI’s Claw walkthrough directs you to the MSI Center M home page, where you select a gaming platform, sign in and download a game. MSI also describes its App Player as supporting Android mobile games alongside Windows PC games. MSI’s own wording is: “Not only can you play games from the Windows PC platform, but you can also enjoy Android mobile games on your PC.” That is a description of available platforms, not a test result proving that every game works.
Launchers you can use
A Windows Central review of the Claw 8 AI+ reports opening Steam, Ubisoft Connect, the Xbox app, Epic Games, Battle.net and other launchers. This is the main advantage of a Windows handheld: you are not confined to one store. The trade-off is that every launcher has its own sign-in flow, update process, overlay and storage requirements.
Why one game works while another does not
- Controller mapping: Some PC games expect a keyboard and mouse or expose only partial gamepad support. You may need an in-game control setting or a Windows remapping utility.
- Anti-cheat and security: Multiplayer games can require a particular driver, service or secure-boot configuration. A title may launch on a desktop but reject a handheld setup.
- Launcher dependencies: A store download can still require a second launcher, account or background service.
- Performance: A game can be technically compatible yet need lower resolution, a reduced graphics preset or a lower frame-rate target.
- Display and text scale: Small interface elements, unsupported aspect ratios or aggressive Windows scaling can make a title difficult to use even when it runs.
A practical compatibility check
- Identify the exact Claw model and its Windows version.
- Check the game’s PC system requirements and whether the developer lists gamepad or handheld support.
- Install the required launcher from Windows, then sign in before downloading a large title.
- Start with the game’s default controller profile and graphics preset.
- If it launches but performs poorly, lower resolution or power demand before concluding that the title is incompatible.
- For competitive multiplayer, confirm the game’s current anti-cheat requirements; these can change independently of MSI.
Does the MSI Claw run Windows?
Yes. The Claw is a Windows handheld PC. You use Windows for desktop applications, system updates, drivers and PC game launchers, while MSI Center M supplies handheld-oriented controls and access to gaming platforms. Windows gives the Claw broad software access, but it also means you may encounter desktop-style prompts, launcher updates and settings that are absent from a closed console.
Downloading a game through MSI Center M
- Open MSI Center M from Windows.
- On the MSI Center M home page, select the gaming platform you want to use.
- Sign in to that platform’s account.
- Choose the game and start its download.
- Launch it from the platform or from Windows after installation.
The exact buttons can change with MSI Center M and Windows updates, so treat the path as the current workflow described in MSI’s guide rather than a promise that every software version has identical labels.

Windows PC games and Android games are separate cases
Windows games use their PC versions and PC launchers. Android games use MSI App Player, which provides a different runtime and control path. An Android version may have different graphics, accounts, purchases and controller behavior from its Windows counterpart. Do not assume that installing the Android edition solves a Windows anti-cheat or launcher problem.
How long does the MSI Claw battery last?
There is no single Claw runtime number. MSI lists a 53 Wh battery for the original Claw A1M and an 80 Wh battery for the Claw A8. Those are capacities, not hours of play. MSI’s product-page battery notes say life varies with system configuration.
Independent runtime evidence
Windows Central reported about two hours of intensive gaming on its Claw 8 AI+ review unit. That unit used an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor, 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. The result belongs to that review configuration and workload; it is not a controlled cross-model benchmark or a guarantee for every Claw. The same review notes that lower TDP settings and less demanding workloads can extend runtime.
What changes runtime in practice
- Game load: A demanding 3D game drains the battery faster than a lightweight 2D title, streaming video or desktop work.
- Power mode and TDP: Higher power limits can improve performance while increasing consumption. Lower settings can extend play time when frame rate remains acceptable.
- Brightness and refresh settings: A brighter display and higher refresh target add to system draw.
- Wireless and background activity: Downloads, updates, overlays and connected peripherals consume power while you play.
- Battery condition: Capacity declines with age and charging cycles, so an older unit will not match a new one with identical settings.
Using MSI’s battery controls
MSI’s guide says Battery Master can set a charge limit for people who normally keep the handheld plugged in. A charge limit can reduce time spent at full charge, but MSI does not promise a particular increase in runtime or battery life. Use the setting when the Claw is acting as a mostly-docked PC; remove the limit when you need maximum portable capacity.

MSI also recommends running Battery Calibration every three months to maintain battery performance and health. Calibration helps the system estimate the remaining percentage accurately; it is not a stated way to add a fixed number of minutes to a gaming session. Follow the Battery Master instructions shown by your installed MSI Center M version, keep the charger connected as directed, and avoid interrupting the process.
Can you put a microSD card in an MSI Claw?
Often, yes, but the correct card depends on the exact Claw. MSI lists an SD4.0 reader on the original A1M, a microSD reader on the A8 and a microSD Express reader on the Claw 8 EX AI+. “Has a card slot” is therefore not enough information to choose an accessory.

What the 600–800 MB/s claim means
The 600–800 MB/s figure is MSI’s average-read-speed claim for the Claw 8 EX AI+ microSD Express reader. It is tied to that model and should not be used to estimate performance on the A1M or A8. Actual throughput also depends on the card, file sizes, temperature and workload; a card cannot exceed the capabilities of its own interface.
Capacity and backward compatibility
The available MSI specifications do not state the maximum supported microSD capacity for each Claw. They also do not establish a complete backward-compatibility matrix between microSD Express cards and the readers in older models. Check the current documentation for your exact model and card standard before ordering. If the documentation does not list a capacity, do not treat a retailer’s generic “supports up to” statement as an MSI guarantee.

Installing and using a card
- Power down the Claw rather than removing or inserting storage during an active write.
- Verify whether your model requires a standard microSD card or supports microSD Express.
- Insert the card in the reader according to the device markings; do not force it.
- Start Windows and open File Explorer to confirm that the card appears.
- Format it only after backing up any existing files. Use the file system required by the game launcher or storage task.
- In your launcher, choose the card as an install location only after confirming that Windows can read and write to it reliably.
A card is useful for a large game library, screenshots and media, but it is not automatically equivalent to the Claw’s internal SSD. Install a demanding game on the internal drive first if you are troubleshooting stutter or unusually long loading, then compare after verifying the card’s standard and health.

Use a model-by-model checklist instead of ranking handhelds by battery watt-hours alone.
- Processor generation: Confirm the CPU family and graphics capability for the games you intend to play.
- Battery capacity and tested workload: Compare Wh figures separately from independent runtime, and record the game, power mode and brightness used in any test.
- Card-reader standard: SD4.0, a conventional microSD reader and microSD Express are not interchangeable labels.
- Windows and launcher needs: Decide whether you need several PC storefronts, Android App Player support or a simpler console-like workflow.
- Screen and performance targets: Match resolution, refresh rate and graphics settings to the games rather than assuming the newest model will run every title at a fixed frame rate.
This approach prevents two common mistakes: treating the A8’s 80 Wh battery as proof of a specific number of gaming hours, and assuming that an Express reader or its advertised speed applies to earlier Claws.

Common problems and fixes
A game launches but the controls do not work
Check the game’s controller setting, switch between its native gamepad and keyboard-and-mouse modes, and close conflicting overlays. If the title requires a launcher window, complete sign-in and any first-run prompts before switching to full-screen play.

A game runs, but battery drains quickly
Reduce the power or TDP mode, lower brightness, cap the frame rate and close downloads or updates. Compare results only after keeping those settings consistent. Do not infer a battery fault from one demanding title.
The microSD card is not detected
Shut down and reseat the card, then check Disk Management in Windows. If it still does not appear, confirm that the card’s physical format and standard match the reader listed for your model. Avoid formatting until you have checked for existing data and tested the card in a compatible reader.
The advertised storage speed is not appearing
Only the Claw 8 EX AI+ page’s 600–800 MB/s average-read claim applies to that Express reader. A slower result on an A1M or A8 is not evidence that those devices should reach Express speeds; their listed reader standards differ.
Bottom line for prospective and current owners
The MSI Claw’s defining feature is Windows flexibility: you can use major PC launchers and MSI App Player rather than being limited to one game store. That flexibility does not make every game compatible, and it brings the setup and troubleshooting duties of a Windows PC. Match battery and storage advice to the exact model—53 Wh for the original A1M, 80 Wh for the A8, and different card-reader standards across generations. For runtime, treat the roughly two-hour intensive-gaming report as one Claw 8 AI+ reviewer result, not a universal promise; for storage, verify the reader standard and capacity in your model’s current documentation before buying a card.
