The best MSI Claw alternative depends on what you value most. Choose the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X if you want a current Windows handheld with broad launcher compatibility; the Lenovo Legion Go 2 if you want the biggest, most premium screen and detachable controllers; the Lenovo Legion Go S if you want a third-party handheld running SteamOS; or the Steam Deck OLED if you want the most console-like Steam experience. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ remains a performance-focused luxury option, but a review price of approximately $1,800 makes it difficult to recommend as a default purchase.
There is no universally best PC gaming handheld. Windows offers wider configuration and launcher flexibility, while SteamOS generally feels more like a console built around Steam. Screen size, weight, battery behavior, game compatibility, local pricing and availability can matter more than small differences in benchmark results.

Quick picks: which handheld should you buy?
| Handheld | Best for | Key reason to consider it | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X | Most Windows buyers | Tom’s Hardware names it the best Windows handheld in its buying guide. | Its 7-inch LCD is smaller than the Legion Go 2’s 8.8-inch OLED, and Windows can require more setup than SteamOS. |
| Lenovo Legion Go 2 | Large-screen, premium play | An 8.8-inch OLED display and detachable controllers create a flexible living-room or desk setup. | Tom’s Guide lists it at more than two pounds, so it is less convenient to carry than smaller handhelds. |
| Lenovo Legion Go S | SteamOS outside the Steam Deck family | It provides a SteamOS option in a third-party handheld design. | Performance, configuration and stock vary by exact version and market; verify the listing before buying. |
| Steam Deck OLED | Simple Steam-focused ownership | SteamOS provides a console-like interface centered on a large Steam library. | Non-Steam launchers and games with unusual anti-cheat or Windows requirements may need extra work. |
| MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM | Performance-focused luxury buyers | PC Gamer’s review led its tested handheld benchmark suite. | The reviewed unit was approximately $1,800, and that was a review-era figure rather than a guaranteed current retail price. |
For any model, check the exact processor, memory, storage, operating system, regional keyboard or power-adapter configuration, retailer return policy and current stock. Handheld PC prices and variants change quickly, and editorial price snapshots are not permanent quotes.

Why replace an MSI Claw at all?
“MSI Claw” covers more than one generation. The 2024 MSI brochure documents the Claw A1M, while the newer Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM is a different product. A specification from the A1M cannot safely be applied to the later model. The brochure lists a 53 Wh battery, a microSD card reader and USB-C Power Delivery charging for the A1M only: MSI’s 2024 brochure.
That model distinction matters when you read listings, reviews or accessory advice. A retailer may shorten a product name to “Claw,” omit the generation, or mix images from different configurations. Match the full model identifier, display size, processor, memory and storage before comparing prices.
You may also be looking beyond the Claw because the category now offers clearer choices. Windows handhelds can install multiple launchers and support a wider range of PC configurations, but desktop-style updates, launchers and controller mappings can take time to manage. SteamOS devices usually present a more focused, gamepad-first interface, although compatibility still depends on the individual game, anti-cheat system and launcher.

Windows: broad compatibility and more control
Windows is the safer platform when your library spans Steam, Xbox PC games, Epic, GOG, subscription services, emulators or games that require a Windows-only launcher. It also gives you ordinary desktop access for installing utilities, changing graphics drivers and troubleshooting files. The cost is friction: small touch targets, background updates, launcher sign-ins and games that expect a keyboard and mouse can make the first-run experience feel less like a console.
The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X is the clearest Windows recommendation in the collected buying coverage. Tom’s Hardware names it the best Windows handheld, making it the starting point for buyers who want a current Windows device without choosing the most expensive specialist option. Its 7-inch LCD, reported by Tom’s Guide, also makes it a more compact visual package than the 8.8-inch Legion Go 2: Tom’s Guide’s comparison.
SteamOS: a console-like Steam library
SteamOS is designed around launching and managing Steam games with a controller. Sleep and resume, library navigation and performance settings generally follow a console-style model. That simplicity is valuable if most of your games are already on Steam and you do not want to maintain a miniature Windows desktop.
SteamOS is not a universal compatibility guarantee. Some games need a different Proton version, an external launcher, a manual control layout or a Windows installation. Multiplayer anti-cheat support can change by game and by update. Treat SteamOS as a practical tendency toward simplicity, not proof that every title will work identically.

The Steam Deck OLED is the obvious SteamOS choice, while the Lenovo Legion Go S gives buyers a third-party alternative. If you want detachable controllers, a large display or a different performance envelope, the Legion Go 2 may be a better physical design even if its operating-system experience is less focused on Steam.

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X: the safest Windows alternative
Who it suits
Pick the ROG Xbox Ally X when you want Windows compatibility first but still want a handheld-oriented interface and controls. It is the most straightforward recommendation for players with mixed launchers, PC subscriptions or games that do not fit neatly into a SteamOS workflow.
What stands out
- Tom’s Hardware recommends it as the best Windows handheld in its current buying guide.
- Tom’s Guide lists a 7-inch LCD display, a useful reference point when comparing it with larger OLED models.
- Its Windows foundation allows you to install launchers and desktop software without replacing the operating system.
Trade-offs
A 7-inch display is easier to carry than a larger panel but gives less room for tiny text, strategy-game interfaces and desktop windows. Windows also means you should expect occasional configuration work: sign-ins, updates, graphics settings, controller profiles and on-screen keyboard use. These are platform trade-offs rather than evidence that a particular unit is defective.
Choose this model over the Legion Go 2 when portability and broad Windows support matter more than the largest possible screen. Choose SteamOS instead when almost all of your library is on Steam and minimizing desktop maintenance is your priority.

Lenovo Legion Go 2: the large-screen premium option
Display and controls
Tom’s Guide lists the Legion Go 2 with an 8.8-inch OLED display and a weight above two pounds. That combination creates a clear benefit and cost: games, text and menus are more spacious, but the device is materially heavier to hold for a long session. The controllers detach, allowing a tabletop or docked style of play that smaller fixed-controller handhelds do not provide in the same way.
Who should buy it
- Players who value OLED contrast and a physically large image.
- People who often play at a desk, on a stand or connected to a larger display.
- Owners who will actually use detachable controllers rather than carrying the device as a compact portable.
Who should avoid it
Skip it if you expect to play one-handed, carry the handheld daily or dislike wrist fatigue. A larger screen does not automatically mean a better handheld experience: weight, grip position and the space required in a bag are part of the purchase.
The display and weight figures above come from Tom’s Guide’s 2025 comparison, not a new laboratory measurement. Confirm the current specification for the exact regional model before ordering, especially if a listing uses “Legion Go 2” without a full configuration.
Lenovo Legion Go S: SteamOS in a third-party handheld
The Legion Go S is notable because it offers a SteamOS route outside the Steam Deck line. That makes it a candidate for buyers who like the SteamOS workflow but want Lenovo’s hardware design, controls or availability in their market.

- [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
Choose the Go S when SteamOS convenience is more important than having every Windows launcher immediately available. Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X when you know you need Windows-only games or frequent desktop customization. Do not assume that switching operating systems produces the same battery life or frame rate; those outcomes depend on firmware, drivers, power limits, game settings and the specific game.
Steam Deck OLED: the focused SteamOS choice
The Steam Deck OLED remains the most natural recommendation for a Steam-first buyer. Its value is not just the panel: SteamOS, controller-oriented navigation and a large body of community configuration knowledge create a coherent ownership experience.
Best use case
It is a strong fit if you buy most games through Steam, want suspend-and-resume behavior and prefer to spend less time navigating Windows. It is also a good choice for players who are comfortable checking a game’s compatibility status before purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhere it needs patience
Games outside Steam may require workarounds. External launchers, unsupported anti-cheat, unusual middleware and games that expect Windows can break the console-like flow. You may need to use desktop mode, install a compatibility tool or accept that a title is better played elsewhere.
SteamOS’s simplicity should therefore be treated as a priority match, not a promise that every PC game behaves like a console release. If your library is mostly Steam and your tolerance for setup is low, that trade-off is often worthwhile.
MSI Claw 8 EX AI+: when the premium price is justified
The Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM is the performance-oriented choice in this group. PC Gamer reported that its reviewed unit led the outlet’s tested handheld benchmark suite, but also described an approximately $1,800 price. That is a review figure, not a guaranteed current retail price, and it places the device in a luxury tier rather than a default recommendation: PC Gamer’s review.
Buy it only if you value the fastest result in the games you play, accept premium pricing and have verified the exact configuration available in your region. A benchmark lead does not remove the normal handheld constraints of heat, noise, battery drain, display resolution or game-specific settings.
Do not confuse this model with the older Claw A1M. The A1M’s 53 Wh battery and documented ports belong to MSI’s 2024 brochure for that model; they are not evidence of the Claw 8 EX AI+’s specifications.

What the published benchmark actually shows
One controlled game result is useful for illustrating how much context a benchmark needs. PC Gamer tested Black Myth: Wukong at 1080p Medium and reported the following averages and 1% lows:
| Device | Average FPS | 1% low |
|---|---|---|
| MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ | 33 FPS | 16 FPS |
| ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X | 26 FPS | 19 FPS |
| MSI Claw 8 AI+ | 20 FPS | 15 FPS |
| Lenovo Legion Go S | 15 FPS | 11 FPS |
These are PC Gamer’s review results for one game, one resolution and one preset in 2026. They are not a universal ranking, a population statistic or a guarantee of the frame rate you will see. The 1% low is especially important: a higher average can still feel less consistent if frame-time dips are severe.
Use benchmark tables to ask better questions. Was the test run at the same power limit? Was upscaling enabled? Which driver and firmware were installed? Was the display running at its native resolution? Without those details, comparing two numbers can create false precision.
Screen size, panel type and weight: the daily-use trade-off
The larger options make the relationship between screen and portability obvious. The Legion Go 2’s 8.8-inch OLED is more immersive and gives interfaces extra room, while the ROG Xbox Ally X’s 7-inch LCD keeps the overall visual footprint smaller. Tom’s Guide lists the Legion Go 2 above two pounds, so the screen advantage comes with a carrying and wrist-weight penalty.
OLED can provide stronger contrast and more vivid dark scenes, but panel quality alone does not determine playability. Resolution, refresh behavior, brightness, text scaling and the game’s own interface matter. A smaller LCD may be preferable if you play outdoors, travel frequently or want a lighter load.
Before buying, measure your normal use rather than imagining an ideal session. If most play happens on a couch with the device held in front of you, weight and grip are decisive. If most play happens on a stand with a controller or on a desk, a large panel becomes easier to justify.

Battery capacity is not runtime
A watt-hour figure describes stored energy, not how long a game will run. Runtime changes with brightness, frame rate, processor power limit, wireless radios, game engine, refresh rate and background activity. The documented 53 Wh figure for the Claw A1M is therefore not a runtime claim, and it should not be transferred to later Claw models.

Charging and accessories
MSI’s A1M brochure confirms USB-C Power Delivery charging and a microSD card reader for that model. Those interfaces can make a charger or memory card useful, but the documentation does not establish universal compatibility across every Claw generation or every competing handheld. Check the port specification, charging wattage and included adapter for the exact device.
Storage planning
Modern PC games can consume substantial storage, and handheld operating systems also reserve space. Compare the installed capacity and expansion method before focusing on processor performance. A microSD slot is convenient for a large library, but loading behavior and game compatibility can vary; internal storage is usually the safer location for demanding titles.
How to choose in five steps
- List your launchers. Write down the games and services you actually use. If Windows-only software or several PC storefronts are essential, start with the ROG Xbox Ally X or another Windows model. If nearly everything is in Steam, include the Steam Deck OLED and Legion Go S.
- Set a carry-weight limit. Decide whether you will hold the device for an hour, carry it in a small bag or mostly use it docked. A large OLED screen is less attractive if the device is too heavy for your sessions.
- Choose your screen priority. Pick a compact 7-inch-class display for portability or the Legion Go 2’s listed 8.8-inch OLED when image size and contrast are worth the bulk.
- Check game-specific performance. Search for benchmarks at the resolution, preset and power limit you expect. Treat the Black Myth: Wukong figures above as one test context, not a guarantee for another title.
- Verify the exact listing. Confirm the full model name, operating system, memory, storage, charger, regional warranty, return window and current price immediately before purchase.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Mistake: treating every “Claw” as the same device
Fix: Match the generation and model code. A1M documentation cannot validate Claw 8 EX AI+ specifications.
Mistake: choosing by average FPS alone
Fix: Read the test resolution, preset, upscaling mode, power limit and 1% low. A result without that context is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
Mistake: assuming SteamOS runs every PC game
Fix: Check the individual game’s compatibility and anti-cheat behavior. Plan for occasional desktop-mode or compatibility-tool work.
Mistake: buying a large handheld for travel
Fix: Compare the complete device weight and your actual carrying setup. The Legion Go 2’s listed weight above two pounds is a meaningful consideration, not a footnote.
Mistake: confusing battery capacity with battery life
Fix: Find a tested runtime at stated settings, or treat capacity as an incomplete data point.
Bottom line: the right MSI Claw alternative is preference-dependent
Start with the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X if Windows compatibility is your priority. Choose the Lenovo Legion Go 2 for its 8.8-inch OLED and detachable controllers, accepting the weight. Choose the Lenovo Legion Go S or Steam Deck OLED when a SteamOS-first experience matters most. Reserve the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ for buyers who deliberately want a premium performance option and can justify a review-era price of about $1,800.
Whichever route you take, identify the exact model and operating system, check the games you actually play, and verify current regional pricing and stock. Those checks prevent more disappointment than choosing a nominal benchmark winner.
