The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is a high-performance Windows gaming handheld, but its roughly $1,800 US launch price makes it a premium purchase rather than an easy value pick. Tom’s Hardware called it the most powerful handheld it had tested at the time; that is a reviewer’s bounded judgment, not a permanent ranking. Its 8-inch 120Hz IPS screen, substantial weight and lack of OLED matter as much as its speed when deciding whether to buy.
What hardware do you get?
MSI’s US CG3EM-024US configuration pairs Windows 11 Home with an Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor, integrated Intel Arc B390 graphics, 32GB of LPDDR5x memory and a 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD. MSI’s specification page lists a 14-core, 14-thread CPU with boost speeds up to 4.7GHz. MSI’s specifications identify the US model; configurations and details can differ by region.

The touchscreen measures 8 inches diagonally and has a 1920×1200 resolution, IPS-Level panel, 48–120Hz variable refresh rate and 100% sRGB typical coverage. It is not OLED. Tom’s Hardware and WIRED both regarded the missing OLED panel as a notable omission at this price. TechRadar reported 500-nit brightness, while WIRED describes an 80Wh battery; treat those as review-source details and confirm the exact regional SKU.
For controls and security, MSI lists Hall Effect analog sticks and triggers, RGB ABXY buttons and a fingerprint security feature. TechRadar reported a weight of 786g, which is worth considering if you expect to hold the device for long sessions.

How fast is it in games?
The strongest independent result in the available coverage is from Tom’s Hardware, which called the Claw 8 EX AI+ the most powerful gaming handheld it had tested at publication. In one stress test, the reviewer ran Metro Exodus 15 times at 800p on Medium settings to simulate roughly 30 minutes of play; the average was nearly 70 FPS. Tom’s Hardware also reported advantages of 20 to more than 30 FPS in some tested games at 1200p or 800p compared with its handheld competitors. Those figures describe particular tests, not a guaranteed advantage in every game.
Performance depends on the title, resolution, graphics preset, driver, power profile and whether frame generation is enabled. MSI’s own August 27, 2026 performance article says that, in its testing, the device exceeded 120 FPS across multiple AAA titles at 1200p with Frame Generation or Multi-Frame Generation enabled. MSI cautions that actual frame rates vary with games, settings, drivers and system conditions. Frame-generated output should not be confused with a like-for-like measure of traditionally rendered frames. MSI’s performance article also attributes improved cooling to its Cooler Boost HyperFlow design, claiming 9% higher airflow and 5W more TDP cooling capacity than the previous generation; those are manufacturer comparisons, not independent measurements cited here.

For a specific game, look for a benchmark using the same resolution and settings you plan to use, and note whether it has frame generation enabled. A high FPS figure from a different configuration may not predict how the game will feel on your preferred settings.

Is the screen and Windows experience right for you?
IPS rather than OLED
The 1920×1200 IPS panel offers a large, high-refresh display with VRR, but it does not deliver OLED’s self-emissive pixels. If deep blacks and OLED contrast are priorities, that omission is a real trade-off—not something the refresh rate resolves.

Windows flexibility, with some friction
Windows 11 gives the handheld access to multiple PC storefronts and familiar Windows games. WIRED noted repeated updates and an interface that could be streamlined, so expect more PC-like setup and maintenance than on a console built around a single, simplified interface. TechRadar also discussed the Windows experience in its review.

Review coverage reported launch-era prices of $1,799.99 in the US, £1,399.99 in the UK and AU$2,849 in Australia. These are reported regional launch prices, not confirmed current checkout prices. Tom’s Hardware cited $1,799 in its review and explicitly tied that premium to the handheld’s performance and cost. The value case is strongest for someone who wants powerful portable Windows gaming, appreciates the 8-inch high-refresh display and will use the device enough to justify a premium. It is harder to recommend on value alone if OLED, lower weight or a lower purchase price matters more. The reviewed sources do not establish a controlled, directly comparable battery-runtime result, so battery life should not be inferred from the 80Wh capacity by itself.

What should you check before buying?
- Confirm the exact model: the hardware described here is MSI’s US CG3EM-024US configuration; verify memory, storage and display specifications for the model sold in your region.
- Check today’s price and inventory: review-era launch prices may not match current offers or availability.
- Check game-specific performance: match resolution, graphics settings, power profile and frame-generation status when comparing benchmarks.
- Consider the weight and panel: the review-reported 786g weight and IPS display may be decisive for long handheld sessions or OLED-focused buyers.
- Verify included accessories and charging gear: MSI’s Launch Pack names a travel case and custom 8-inch glass protector. MSI separately says a compatible hub supports up to 100W USB-C PD, while the handheld’s maximum charging speed is 65W; those figures describe different things. Check what is included with the specific listing. MSI’s feature page provides the Launch Pack and charging details.
