Verdict: The MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM is best for players who value an unusually large 8-inch, 120Hz screen, 32GB of memory and strong plugged-in performance more than low weight, long unplugged sessions or deep handheld software customization. Its 80Wh battery is large on paper, but independent testing found demanding games could exhaust it in about two hours. Confirm the exact A2VM regional configuration and today’s price before buying.
What the MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM is
This review concerns the MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM, not the later Claw 8 EX AI+ or another Claw configuration. It is a Windows handheld gaming PC built around Intel’s Core Ultra 7 258V processor and integrated Intel Arc 140V graphics.

The cited Malaysia specification sheet, dated August 14, 2025, lists 32GB of LPDDR5x memory, a 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, a microSD card reader, Hall Effect sticks and triggers, two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a 795g weight. Regional configurations can differ, so treat those details as specific to the documented SKU rather than universal.
The 8-inch display is the main reason to consider it
The 1920×1200 touchscreen runs at up to 120Hz. MSI’s December 2024 launch announcement also specifies 500 nits typical brightness and 100% sRGB typical coverage. The extra screen area is useful for strategy games, desktop work and interfaces designed for a monitor rather than a seven-inch handheld.
#1 Best Overall
- AI-Powered Performance: Harness the capabilities of the latest Intel Core Ultra 7 processor to effortlessly manage demanding tasks. Extend your productivity with the most powerful and reliable performance on the go.
- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
- Perfection Through Anthropometry: As a handheld device, Claw has achieved the optimal balance between its grip and weight. We have meticulously polished various design details, from the curvature that fits the palm, to the finger grip positions and trigger force.
- Best-in-Class Battery Life: Unlock exceptional gaming endurance with our breakthrough battery capacity. It's where efficient power meets robust performance—more game, less charge.
- 8-inch Smoothness Ready: Dive into the ultimate gaming experience with our 8-inch premium 120Hz gaming display, with exceptional color reproduction and smooth action.
A 120Hz panel can make supported games and menus feel smoother, but the Claw cannot render every demanding game at 120 frames per second. You will still choose a resolution, quality preset and frame-rate target that match each title’s performance.
Performance: promising results, with conditions attached
Windows Central measured a 3DMark Time Spy score of 3,882, a Night Raid score of 28,499, a CrossMark score of 1,665 and SSD read/write results of 6,068/5,324 MB/s on its review unit. Those are publication test results, not guaranteed outcomes for every firmware version, driver, power mode or game.
In a separate Windows Central comparison, the Claw 8 AI+ averaged 59 frames per second in Cyberpunk 2077 using Steam Deck graphics defaults. The same test reported 36 FPS for the Lenovo Legion Go and 29 FPS for the ROG Ally X. Because the comparison used one reviewer’s settings and equipment, use the figures as directional evidence rather than a universal ranking.

Those are manufacturer comparisons; MSI’s announcement does not provide enough methodology here to treat them as independent testing. MSI also promotes support for more than 150 AAA titles, which is a compatibility-positioning claim rather than a promise of a particular frame rate.

Battery life: 80Wh does not mean all-day gaming
The battery is rated at 80Wh, a substantial capacity for a handheld. Capacity and runtime are different measures: CPU and GPU load, display brightness, refresh rate, frame-rate limits, speakers, wireless radios and the selected performance profile all change consumption.
Windows Central’s comparison found that demanding games typically drained the battery in roughly two hours. That runtime is tied to the publication’s test conditions and should not be generalized to lighter games, streaming, video playback or low-power use. Plan on carrying the charger for serious gaming away from an outlet.
Controls, ports and everyday handling
Hall Effect controls
Hall Effect sticks and triggers use magnetic sensing rather than conventional contact-based components. The specification identifies the hardware; it does not establish a lifetime guarantee or eliminate every possible control failure. Their presence is nevertheless a useful feature for buyers concerned about traditional stick wear.
Connectivity
Two Thunderbolt 4 ports provide high-speed peripheral and display connectivity. The device also includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and a microSD card reader. Exact wireless performance depends on the network, router and driver environment.

Weight and comfort
At 795g on the cited Malaysia sheet, this is a substantial handheld to hold for a long session. MSI describes the design as ergonomic and says its controls were redesigned for comfort, but those statements are manufacturer positioning. Comfort depends on hand size, grip shape, posture, session length and how the weight is distributed. The larger screen may feel more immersive while making the device less convenient to carry than a smaller rival.
How it compares with the Legion Go and ROG Ally X
The table combines the separately published Windows Central comparison with the documented Claw specification. “Not stated” means the supplied evidence does not establish a comparable figure; it is not a claim that the rival lacks the feature.
| Factor | MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM | Lenovo Legion Go | ASUS ROG Ally X |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display | 8-inch, 1920×1200, 120Hz touchscreen | Size and tested configuration not stated in the cited comparison | Size and tested configuration not stated in the cited comparison |
| Cyberpunk 2077 average | 59 FPS at Steam Deck graphics defaults | 36 FPS under the same comparison | 29 FPS under the same comparison |
| Battery runtime in demanding games | Roughly two hours in Windows Central’s comparison | Not stated | Not stated |
| Battery capacity | 80Wh | Not stated | Not stated |
| Controls and customization | Hall Effect sticks and triggers; Windows Central noted fewer MSI Center M customization options | Comparable control details not stated | Comparable control details not stated |
| Weight | 795g on the cited Malaysia specification sheet | Not stated | Not stated |
| US launch-era price | $899.99 for the 32GB/1TB review configuration | Not stated | Not stated |
The Claw’s advantage in that comparison is performance in the named game and a larger display. Its disadvantages are mass, roughly two-hour demanding-game endurance and fewer MSI Center M customization options than some buyers may expect from a premium Windows handheld.

Software and setup considerations
Because it runs Windows, the Claw can access PC storefronts and launchers rather than being limited to one game ecosystem. That flexibility also brings desktop-style setup: Windows updates, graphics drivers, game launchers, controller mappings and occasional troubleshooting.
Rank #4
- Exposure: 8" FHD (1920 x 1200), Touchscreen, 120Hz Refresh Rate, 100% sRGB (Typical), 500 Nits (Typical), VRR, IPS Level Panel
- Processor: AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme
- Hall effect analog activators and sticks built to last with microscopic precision
- RAM: 24GB (Onboard) LPDDR5x-8533MHz | Hard Drive: 1TB NVMe Gen4x4 2230 SSD
- Revolutionary Cooler Boost HyperFlow technology redirects airflow to internal cooling components.
Windows Central specifically identified fewer MSI Center M customization options as a drawback. If you frequently tune wattage, controls, performance profiles or overlays from a handheld interface, inspect the current MSI Center M software before purchase; available controls can change with updates.
Who should buy it?
It makes sense if you want
- An 8-inch high-refresh screen for games and desktop use.
- 32GB RAM and 1TB storage in the documented configuration.
- Two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a microSD slot and modern wireless standards.
- Hall Effect sticks and triggers.
- The strongest result among the three systems in Windows Central’s cited Cyberpunk 2077 comparison.
Consider another handheld if you need
- Long demanding-game sessions away from a charger.
- A lighter device for commuting or extended one-handed holding.
- More extensive built-in performance and control customization.
- A lower purchase price than the Claw’s $899.99 US launch-era MSRP.
Price and buying checklist
$899.99 is the historical US launch/review price for the tested 32GB/1TB configuration, not a verified current price. Check a live retailer listing before ordering; promotions, regional taxes, stock and configuration can change the total.
- Confirm the listing says Claw 8 AI+ A2VM, not Claw 8 EX AI+.
- Verify the included memory, SSD capacity, keyboard layout and wireless specification for your region.
- Check the seller’s current return policy and warranty coverage.
- Budget for a charger during demanding gaming sessions.
- If you need more storage, verify microSD card compatibility and expected game-loading behavior before choosing a card.
Bottom line
The MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM is a large-screen, high-spec Windows handheld whose appeal is clearest at a desk, on a couch or near an outlet. Its 8-inch 120Hz display, 32GB memory, Hall Effect controls and strong reported Cyberpunk 2077 result are meaningful advantages. The 795g body, roughly two-hour demanding-game battery result and less extensive MSI Center M customization make it a less convincing choice for lightweight travel or all-day handheld play. Buy it for the screen and performance, not because an 80Wh battery guarantees long gaming sessions.
