Yes, many people with pacemakers, cochlear implants, insulin pumps, neurostimulators and other devices can travel through airport security—and some can have MRI scans—but neither answer is automatic. MRI permission depends on the exact device, leads, implant location and scanner conditions. Airport screening is usually a disclosure and screening process: tell the officer what is attached or implanted, keep the device in place unless its manufacturer says otherwise, and request a pat-down or private screening if that is more comfortable.
The short answer: identify the exact device before either MRI or travel
An implant card or medical record should identify the manufacturer, model, implant date and, where relevant, leads or accessories. That information is more useful than a general label such as “pacemaker” or “cochlear implant.” Two devices serving the same purpose can have different MRI limits and different airport-screening instructions.

For MRI, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says an implanted device must be positively identified as MR Safe or MR Conditional before an examination. If the status is unknown, treat the scan as unsafe until the radiology team and the device manufacturer resolve it. At airport checkpoints, disclose the device and its location before screening begins. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers can use imaging, a metal detector, visual inspection, additional screening or a pat-down; an attached device normally stays attached.
Why MRI and airport scanners pose different questions
MRI combines three hazards
An MRI scanner uses a strong static magnetic field, changing radiofrequency (RF) energy and rapidly switched gradient fields. Magnetic components can move or twist. RF energy can heat an implant, lead or nearby tissue, producing burns. Gradient fields can induce voltages, stimulate tissue or interfere with electrically active therapy. An implant can also create image artifacts that obscure the anatomy being examined.

Risk is not determined by the magnet strength alone. The allowed combination may depend on field strength (commonly 1.5 tesla or 3 tesla), body region, scanner operating mode, specific absorption rate (SAR) or another RF limit, coil type, patient position, scan duration and whether the device must be programmed, monitored or checked afterward.
Airport screening is brief and controlled
Walk-through metal detectors and millimeter-wave scanners expose a traveler for a short period and are not MRI scanners. A joint FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health and TSA technical report in 2016 evaluated millimeter-wave exposure for more than 50 sample personal medical electronic devices, including pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), neurostimulators, insulin pumps and TENS devices. That testing does not replace the instructions for your particular model, and it does not authorize removing or disabling a device.
Understand the MRI safety labels
| Label | What it means | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| MR Safe | The item poses no known hazards in the MRI environment when used as labeled. | Still disclose it; the center must know about every implant, accessory and metal fragment. |
| MR Conditional | The item is safe only under specified conditions. A scan outside any one condition may be unsafe. | Provide the exact model and leads. Have the MRI team verify every condition before scheduling. |
| MR Unsafe | The item is known to pose a hazard in the MRI environment. | Do not proceed unless a qualified clinician and radiology team establish a different, documented plan. |
| Unknown | The available information is insufficient to establish a safe status. | Pause the examination. Obtain records or manufacturer confirmation rather than guessing. |
“MR Conditional” is not a blanket approval. For example, a device may be allowed at 1.5 T but not 3 T, or for a head scan but not a body scan. A compatible generator paired with an incompatible lead, abandoned lead or accessory can change the decision.

- Record the complete device identity. Write down the manufacturer, model, serial number if available, implant location, implant date, lead models and any extensions, anchors, magnets or accessories. Include devices that are temporary, external or no longer in use.
- Call the implanting clinician or manufacturer. Ask for the current MRI conditions for that exact system, not just the product family. If your card is lost, ask the manufacturer or implanting clinic for a replacement or written identification.
- Tell the ordering clinician why an MRI is being considered. The diagnostic benefit must be weighed against device-specific risk. An alternative test is not automatically equivalent, so the decision belongs to your clinical team.
- Give the imaging center the information before the appointment. Send a copy of the implant card or manufacturer documentation and state where every component is located. This allows the center to confirm whether it has the right scanner, software, monitoring and staff.
- Ask which scan conditions will be used. Confirm field strength, body region, operating mode, SAR or other RF limits, coil restrictions, patient positioning, permitted scan duration, programming requirements and post-scan checks. Ask who will monitor you and who can reprogram the device.
Do not rely on an old scan approval if the device, lead, software or scanner has changed. The radiology team should verify the conditions for the specific examination being planned.

At the imaging center: disclose everything
Tell the technologist and radiologist about every implant and piece of metal, even if it seems unrelated to the body part being scanned. Relevant examples include:
- Pacemakers, ICDs, cardiac monitors and their leads
- Neurostimulators, deep-brain stimulators and spinal-cord stimulators
- Insulin pumps, medication pumps and continuous glucose monitors
- Cochlear implants and other hearing implants
- Aneurysm clips, vascular coils, stents and orthopedic hardware
- Abandoned, capped or fractured leads
- Metal fragments, including possible eye injuries from grinding or welding
- External wearable components, magnets, charging systems and recent temporary devices
Bring the implant card and medication list to the appointment. Remove only items the MRI staff identifies as removable. If a device must be placed in an MRI mode, programmed, disconnected or checked after scanning, follow the center’s written process; do not change settings yourself.
Device-specific issues that often change the plan
Pacemakers and ICDs
Modern cardiac systems may be MR Conditional, but permission depends on the generator, every lead, battery status, programming and the planned scan. The team may need to place the device in a designated MRI mode, monitor your heart rhythm and restore normal settings afterward. An abandoned or mismatched lead can invalidate an otherwise compatible system.
Neurostimulators and medication pumps
Electrical stimulators and pumps can be affected by induced currents, heating or programming changes. Some components may be allowed only for particular body regions or with the therapy turned off. Confirm whether the pump or stimulator can be safely stopped, who will manage medication or stimulation during the scan and how function will be checked afterward.

Insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors
Many wearable pumps and sensors are not designed to enter an MRI scanner. The manufacturer may require removal, and removal can interrupt insulin delivery or glucose monitoring. Ask the prescribing team how to maintain treatment while the device is off and what replacement supplies to carry.
Cochlear implants
Cochlear implants require special care because some are MR Unsafe and others are MR Conditional. Conditions may include a field-strength limit, magnet removal or a manufacturer-approved splint or bandage kit. Use only the kit and instructions specified for your model; an improvised wrap is not a substitute.
Aneurysm clips, fragments and other passive implants
Older aneurysm clips, unknown clips and metallic fragments can be dangerous even when they are small. If there is any possibility of a metal fragment in the eye, tell the center before arrival. The team may need prior imaging or operative records to establish the material and model.
If the device is MR Unsafe or its status is unknown
Do not enter the scanner room or proceed with the examination until the status is resolved. Ask the imaging center to contact the implanting service or manufacturer and document the result. If MRI remains unsuitable, the ordering clinician can consider another modality after weighing its diagnostic value, limitations and any separate risks. Never infer compatibility from a friend’s device, a similar-looking model or a previous airport experience.

The FDA reports about 300 adverse-event reports involving MRI scanners and coils each year, while millions of MRI examinations are performed annually in the United States. In the cited FDA information, most reported patient problems involved heating or burns; the agency did not provide a denominator-based injury rate for that figure.
Airport screening checklist
- Prepare before joining the line. Keep your implant card, medication list and essential supplies in your hand luggage, where you can reach them. A TSA notification card or medical documentation can help explain the condition, but it does not replace verbal disclosure.
- Tell the officer before screening starts. Say that you have an attached or implanted device and point to its location. Mention pumps, glucose monitors, external controllers and other equipment, not only permanent implants.
- Keep attached devices in place. TSA guidance says attached devices are not required to be removed. Do not disconnect, remove or power down a device unless its manufacturer says it is safe and the officer directs you to do so.
- Follow the alternative screening method offered. Depending on the checkpoint and device, officers may use a millimeter-wave scanner, metal detector, visual inspection, additional screening or a gentle pat-down. A device that cannot be disconnected may be visually inspected or screened around its location.
- Ask for assistance when needed. You may request a private screening, a same-sex officer for a pat-down, a Passenger Support Specialist or help through TSA Cares. Check current TSA guidance shortly before travel because procedures and contact details can change.
Allow extra time. Screening requirements can vary by airport layout, equipment and the officer’s need to resolve an alarm; an implant card can make the conversation faster, but it cannot guarantee a particular screening method.

|---|---|
| Device-specific safety | Is the exact system MR Safe, MR Conditional or unresolved? Are all leads and accessories included? |
| Scanner or screening conditions | What field strength, operating mode, coil, body region and exposure limits apply? At the airport, what screening method is available? |
| Device management | Must the device be removed, reprogrammed, turned off, monitored or checked afterward? |

| Expertise and logistics | Does the site have an experienced MR team and the necessary programmer or monitoring equipment? How much travel delay or privacy accommodation is likely? |
Common problems and practical fixes
“My card says MRI compatible, but the center declined the scan.”
Ask which condition is missing. The issue may be a 3 T scanner, a body-region restriction, an incompatible lead, a required programmer or the center’s inability to provide monitoring. Obtain the complete manufacturer conditions and ask whether another facility can meet them.
“I do not know the model.”
Contact the implanting clinic, hospital medical-records department or manufacturer. Do not schedule an MRI on the assumption that an implant is a newer version of a familiar product.
“The airport officer wants additional screening.”
Keep the device attached, repeat its location and show your card. You can request a private screening or a pat-down and ask for a Passenger Support Specialist. Follow the officer’s instructions unless they conflict with the manufacturer’s device-handling instructions; in that case, explain the conflict and request a supervisor.

Bottom line for patients and travelers
MRI safety is a model-and-conditions decision, not a yes-or-no decision based on the device category. Verify the exact implant, leads and accessories; match them to the scanner’s labeled conditions; and stop when any element is unknown. Airport screening is generally handled by disclosure, keeping attached equipment in place and choosing an appropriate inspection or pat-down. Carry your implant card and treatment supplies, and request privacy or assistance when you need it.
