To download an authorized MP4 session recording, open the service where the meeting was recorded, locate the recording in its official storage, and use its Download command. Zoom recordings are in the Zoom web portal (cloud) or on the recorder’s computer; Google Meet recordings are in the organizer’s Google Drive; Microsoft Teams recordings are in the organizer’s OneDrive or the channel’s files. If Download is missing, ask the organizer or file owner for access or a permitted copy—do not bypass a restriction.

An MP4 is the video file. A service may offer separate M4A audio, chat, transcript, or attendance files. Downloading one of those does not produce an MP4 video.
Before you download: confirm authorization and the right file
Check that the session was recorded
Look for the platform’s recording notification, a recording link in meeting chat or email, or a file shared by the organizer. A meeting that was never recorded cannot be recovered through the normal download workflow.
Confirm your permission
Being able to watch a recording is not proof that you may save a local copy. The organizer, file owner, or administrator may allow streaming while withholding download. Request access through the platform’s sharing dialog or ask the owner to send an authorized copy.

Use a suitable destination
Save to a folder with enough free space and a name that identifies the session, date, and version. Avoid repeatedly downloading a large file over an unstable connection; use the platform’s download again after the connection is reliable.
How to download a Zoom recording
Cloud recording
- Sign in to the Zoom web portal using the account that has access to the recording.
- Open the recordings area and choose Cloud Recordings.
- Select the meeting and verify its date, duration, and participant context.
- Choose the download control for the MP4 video. If several files are listed, select the video rather than M4A audio or chat text.
- Allow the browser download to finish, then open the file from your download folder and confirm it plays.
Cloud recordings can also be viewed and shared from the portal. If you see the recording but no download control, the owner’s sharing settings or your account role may prohibit downloading. Ask the owner to enable an appropriate download permission or provide a permitted copy.
Computer recording
A Zoom computer recording is written directly to the computer that performed the recording. Find the meeting’s recording folder on that computer and look for the MP4 video file. If you joined from another device, the file will not automatically be on your device; request it from the person or team that recorded the meeting.

How large will a Zoom file be?
Zoom gives approximate storage figures of about 20 MB per hour for screen-sharing recording and about 200 MB per hour for video recording. These are estimates, not guarantees: resolution and the type of content can change the size substantially. Check available disk space before starting a long download.

- Open the recording link from the meeting email, calendar event, or chat, or open Google Drive for the meeting organizer’s account.
- In Drive, open the Google Meet folder and locate the MP4 matching the meeting date and title.
- Open the file menu and choose Download, or use the download control on the recording page.
- Wait for Drive to prepare the file, then play the downloaded MP4 locally.
Google’s help guidance specifically recommends downloading the recording and then playing it from your computer for best results. Meet recordings are saved as MP4 files; related artifacts may be available separately.
When Meet has no Download option
Recording may require host permission, and a Google Workspace administrator can control whether recording is available. File-sharing roles also matter. Google administrator guidance says that, starting April 30, 2026, users in an organization with Viewer or Commenter access to new Meet recordings can copy and download them, while administrators can manage that setting. This applies to organizations adopting that policy; your administrator’s current configuration remains decisive. Ask the organizer or administrator to verify the file’s sharing role rather than attempting to circumvent it.

How to download a Microsoft Teams recording
Non-channel meeting
- Open the meeting chat or recording link in Teams.
- Follow the link to the organizer’s OneDrive Recordings folder when prompted.
- Locate the MP4 with the correct meeting date and title.
- Use the file’s Download command and wait for the browser to complete the transfer.
Channel meeting
- Open the Team and channel where the meeting took place.
- Open the channel’s Files area and locate the recording among the channel files.
- Select the MP4 and choose Download.
Microsoft states that only the meeting organizer can download a meeting recording. An attendee may be able to play the file but still lack download rights. In that case, contact the organizer for an approved copy or for the correct sharing permission.
Verify the downloaded MP4
- Check the extension: the video should end in
.mp4. A file ending in.m4ais audio only. - Check the size: a zero-byte or unusually tiny file usually indicates an interrupted download or a placeholder, not a complete recording.
- Play from disk: open the local file rather than the streaming page. Scrub near the beginning, middle, and end.
- Check completeness: compare duration with the meeting’s expected length and confirm that audio and video are present.
- Preserve the original: keep the first successful download unchanged and make edited copies separately.
Common problems and fixes
“I can watch it, but there is no Download button”
This is usually a permission policy, not a browser defect. Ask the organizer or file owner to grant download access or send an authorized copy. Teams explicitly reserves download to the organizer; Meet and Zoom can also be governed by owner or administrator settings.

Check that you are signed in to the account that received access. Ask the owner whether the recording was deleted, moved, or shared with a different account. For Meet, confirm that the organizer’s Drive file still exists; for Teams, confirm the OneDrive or channel file location.

The download stops or produces a corrupt file
- Retry on a stable connection and avoid closing the browser while the transfer runs.
- Confirm sufficient local storage.
- Use the platform’s own download control instead of saving the streaming page.
- If repeated attempts fail, ask the owner to generate a fresh authorized copy.
The file plays without sound or video
Verify that you selected the MP4 rather than a separate audio file. If the MP4 itself lacks a track, the original recording may not have captured that source; request the owner’s other recording files or an explanation.
The recording is unexpectedly large
Long sessions, high resolution, camera feeds, and detailed screen content increase size. Zoom’s 20 MB/hour and 200 MB/hour figures are approximate examples only. Ensure the destination has room before retrying.

Use a consistent filename such as 2026-09-29-project-training.mp4, retain the original creation context, and store it where your organization’s retention policy permits. When sharing, use the service’s official permission controls and grant the narrowest role needed. A private training or meeting recording may contain personal data, credentials, customer information, or copyrighted material; do not forward it merely because you downloaded it.

Can I download a recording if I was only an attendee?
Only if the owner or administrator grants download permission. Viewing access alone does not establish the right to save a copy; request one through the platform’s official sharing controls.
Is every meeting recording an MP4?
The documented Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams video recordings are MP4, but audio, chat, transcript, and attendance artifacts may be separate files.
Where is a Teams recording from a channel meeting?
It is stored with the channel’s files. A non-channel meeting recording is stored in the organizer’s OneDrive Recordings folder.
